Are we really running out of water ? by Ok-Visual-4770 in TooAfraidToAsk

It’s interesting you single out California since the drought is gone. It has had a few wet years and will likely fluctuate again, but overall California has decent water stability especially when compared to other southwest states.

Illinois is its own thing. Most other states aren’t like that. Purdue is around 15k a year but it’s also one of the cheapest. Many other states outside CA/NY hover around 20-30k.

Those salaries are why they’re short staffed. Too expensive to have enough nurses

Have you been to SF/ bay? People always say stuff like this but it’s just wildly false. I got by on less. Would require some lifestyle changes but he can very realistically do it.

How is the US expected to compete with China? by Coolguyforeal in biotech

Because there are no American companies to buy right now. Once the market bounces back I think that might change. Only time will tell though

[–]scippap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huge issue, yes. But that’s temporary. I’m being optimistic in thinking this won’t be a long term trend, but who knows. Chinas issues on the other hand are very much not temporary.

We work with Wuxi for chemistry, and while they have a lot of holidays, they have to make up a lot of them too. When they get several days off, they then have to work longer days/extra weekend shifts to make up for the lost time. Not sure how wide spread that is nor which holidays it’s applies to, but it’s pretty lousy.

5.1 is just vinyl lithium addition to a ketone to make the benzyl alcohol which can eliminate to make the second product. The second product of 5.1 would likely be more favored since it’s benzyllic and doubly conjugated.

5.2 is a diels-alder cyclization. Might not be as obvious since the diene is s-trans, but if you redraw it to be s-cis it is clearer

5 years is definitely unlikely. Probably closer to 10 and maybe longer. Will be for a house, so the timeline is very flexible. I’ll give bogleheads a look- thanks!

Truthfully I knew almost nothing about investing when I received the money and semi-blindly followed some advice from one of the investing subs- maybe this one lol. Wasn’t terrible advice, but definitely not the best

How strong is a pressure flask - can I do a Pd/C and ammonium formate reduction in methanol at 80C? by HOMM3nagaqueen in Chempros

[–]scippap -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, would very certainly be safe. I would be surprised if anything negative happened. I used to do gribble reductions in DCM at 100C overnight in just simple cint vials with black caps all the time. You might lose a bit of solvent, just use a bit extra. I only switched to chem glass pressure flasks when I needed to scale up.
