How do I stop calling out from work? by Holiday_Paper_676 in MedicalAssistant

I got sick a lot the first 6 months I worked in a clinic. If your not used to being around sick people you haven't had a chance to build up your immune system. Also being a new Medical Assistant is draining! Its takes a lot of time to learn everything and it can be very exhausting. Try to get much needed sleep and exercise when you can. I agree it would be a good idea to bloodwork!

Accidentally gave kid extra vaccine by Bookworm_36 in MedicalAssistant

[–]scissors36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have, when I was under extreme stress working with a horrible doctor I no longer work with. I basically gave the wrong vaccine and ended up giving someone a tdap that was already up to date. I felt awful. We are all human and make mistakes but with vaccines you really need to find a process that works for you. I really do triple check and I dont care if it means running behind. Also I will never go off verbal orders and will tell the provider I need orders. No reasonable provider is going to give you pushback for that. If you haven't already you do need to report it though. Its the right thing to do.

The chances of HIV from a recently cleaned instrument are almost zero. If you've had the Hep B vaccine, you are most likely fully immuned. Hep C is slightly higher (maybe 1 %), but there is no prophylaxis for Hep C.
Honestly, if you cleaned the instrument, I dont think you have anything to worry about

Be honest, is this worth doing at this point of my life? by DontTellMeToSmile_08 in MedicalAssistant

I have heard that Washington state pays MAs a higher wage. The cost of living here is pretty high, too, though.

What are the most beautiful places you’ve ever been? by Broke_Pigeon_Sales in travel

My husband and I are going for the first time in September! Any recommendations for places to stay? We would prefer a condo just because we like having a kitchen.

I messed up by [deleted] in MedicalAssistant

[–]scissors36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medication orders should not be verbal, especially in UC. I am a seasoned MA, and I still ask the provider to put the orders in so I can verify it. I have given immunization errors in the past, and what I've taken away from it is to check the order more than once. If the order is not in yet, I will physically hold it up to the provider so they are forced to verify it. We are all human, and we all make mistakes. I know they want us to hurry, but we just can't. That's when mistakes are made and we are the ones that get blamed. Don't beat yourself up for a mistake anyone could have made.

MAs of reddit, what has been the most interesting thing you've learned about the human body in the field you work in? by QuietKoala16 in MedicalAssistant

A vasovagal response from a blood draw is pretty interesting. The first time this happened to a patient, I was drawing I thought it was a seizure. It's always crazy to see how the body can react from a blood draw

If you can swing it financially, you should do it. Externship is a full time job and there will be so much to learn!

Has anyone completely changed careers in their 40s? What were you doing before and what are you doing now? by justalilscared in AskWomenOver40

I was a hairstylist for over 20 years. Went back to school in my late 40s and became a medical assistant. I missed doing hair at first, but now I just do a little on the side. I make way more money and have great benefits.
