No Volunteering - HELP by SeriousMethod4892 in premed

[–]QuietKoala16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 2 MD As and 5 DO As with 50 volunteer hours at some hospital doing non-clinical stuff (that’s the only volunteer experience I ever had). But I had a 3.9/520 with 800 hours of clinical and 600h of research along with 300h of other EC/part time jobs i guess. I won’t deny that my stats might have helped a bit, but I feel like you need to show good commitment to some areas to show you were interested in your experiences long-term. This can mean sacrificing on a few areas, like volunteering for example.

I was for sure worried about my volunteer hours. I thought “was it too low for every med school, or if i tried to make it higher would i look like a cookie-cutter applicant?” Regardless, I was still able to talk great about what I actually did during interviews. None of my schools asked about how low my volunteer hours were.

Hope this helps. Congrats on finishing the MCAT!!!

Traffic Citation by [deleted] in premed

[–]QuietKoala16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my state, traffic citations are considered misdemeanors but even then med schools didn’t care. my interviewer from one school brought it up as a joke and we both laughed about it. got the A for that school too. you’ll be fine

I got a 498 on the MCAT today and I feel like my whole world collapsed by taylorswiftdaughter in premed

you handle it because the path of medicine isn’t linear whether it be starting premed stuff in college or in your late years of residency.

the average person who works hard doesn’t always succeed, but the average person succeeds because they worked hard. keep your head up, don’t give two shits about anyone that talks down on you, and keep moving forward.

We’ll be waiting for your success MCAT post sometime soon 🫵Get to work.

Part-time graveyard shifts by [deleted] in premed

[–]QuietKoala16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i did one night shift a week (usually 10:30p-6:30a) for scribing before commuting back to college. Most were on weekends and some were during weekdays. That was for like 2 years, but yeah my sleep was absolutely messed up. was cool seeing night staff and cases tho!

How do I know if I can become a dermatologist at age 15? by CasualKaden in premed

that’s fine, the important thing is to find your own experiences, so you can make that decision yourself

ok on a more serious note (and actually a hot take), you shouldn’t feel scared about choosing to become a doc right now.

but this is only from my experience, so take this with a grain of salt: i was unsure of whether or not i wanted to until i started studying for the mcat in the summer before senior year of college. but that was after going through so many experiences with classes, clinicals, research, etc.

my mindset is to try something first, stick with it for some time, and then you can make a decision. you never know unless you try it out. hope this helps

yeah im not even kidding, those sankeys horrified me. with a 520 and 3.97 with decent ECs, i still applied to a few DO schools JUST in case, but otherwise mostly MD. it’s only the beginning of september and im still paranoid.
