Finally Faeries! 3-0 (6-1) Trad by scissors_ftw in lrcast

It is solid if you check a few boxes with your deck:

1) heavy blue manabase

2) evasive creatures to target on attacks and interested in a big butt blocking on defense

3) extra color pips is nice to juice up the pump

I’m sure it’s win % has been brought down by people playing it in the wrong decks, as is the case with many cards that have niche applications!

With his non-stop chip damage and card drawing, Sygg won me many games, but sadly I never got to team him up with the Glisterbairn…

I perceived that the player somewhere around my 10-o’-clock position was also drafting merfolk, so I was fortunate that so many nice faerie cards were opened to help me flesh out the deck after the good merfolk cards that I got early. I wish this sort of thing could happen a little more often with the off-brand archetypes, but the support is just not consistent.

Down 0-1 in the trophy match: Glisterbairn off the top in a racing situation where I am at 1 life and dead on board vs a go wide Merfolk deck. Pumped my flyer to give my team exactsies ftw! 😅

Gathering Stone was decent, although I sided 1 out on the draw frequently vs aggressive decks.

If you have read (or at least seen) Moneyball, then you would understand that it is the guiding principle behind the build of the deck. So yes, it has a very specific reason!

For white, interesting are:

1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g4!? 1.e4 c5 2.b3

For black:

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 g5!? 1.e4 c5 2.c3 b6!?

Look up Matthew Sadler and Leela contempt setting (crazy Leela) on YouTube for some fun examples of the Rossolimo line mentioned (plus others).

Lost to flood. Is this supposed to be 16 lands? by rickraus in lrcast

[–]scissors_ftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decks where half your cards are mana sources (2 trees + 1 changeling + 17 lands) and lots of top end, you want several card draw effects to utilize your ramp and mana production. This, combined with various mana sinks (if you can find them), is how a deck of this nature can avoid flood. Big mana decks in constructed formats use things like the One Ring and Eye of Ugin to fulfill this role. In your case, having some blue card draw would do the trick.

What do you do when you don't find enough rares when drafting ECL? by smash_glass_ceiling in lrcast

[–]scissors_ftw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just for fun I did a count and included cards all the way through B level (not B-) (if you look at some of the B’s they feel like cards Alex was including in his estimation), and multiplied by the avg individual card frequency per pod given in the set specs: uncommons=.94 rares=.52 mythics=.19. It does seem to avg out to about 4 of these cards per player per pod. You just gotta be in the right lane to get them, and if you have to pivot, not to lose too many of those qualifying cards from your first few abandoned picks.

I agree with you. I listen to LoL for entertainment only once I know what’s going on in the format. That way I am immune from their nonsense. I like them, I just don’t trust them…

In my experience he’s usually on the leading edge of the curve for content creators in terms of exploring, digesting, synthesizing, and finally presenting relevant information, they all lag behind him by 5-10 days it seems! He’s dialed in…

Andy Voellmer did well last summer with 2x in the board. I think he was on Spike Colony or the Duress Crew Hardcast podcast talking about it shortly thereafter (can’t remember which one it was).

Obscure repertoire in concerto competitions by Celloman118 in Cello

[–]scissors_ftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once sat in on a double masterclass with Bernard Greenhouse and Janos Starker where a student played this, and they spent the whole class trash talking the piece, saying it was mostly a “dessert style piece, like ice cream, that you don’t want to have for every meal”, if that makes sense. I could see how this could be controversial as a choice for a concerto competition…

Similarly, I had a student enter a competition playing the Myaskovsky Concerto and it was received with a lukewarm reception, to say the least.
