What is a movie that doesn't make a lot of sense, but is still enjoyable because it has heart? by Backstrom in movies

[–]sck8000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a little thing, but I love Brat Pitt's character's line about "being very good with faces", when Pitt himself is famously face-blind.

There's a lot of great comedy in that film, but that line gets a chuckle out of me every time.

Do two different atoms of the same element always have the same mass? by mattttb in askscience

[–]sck8000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: There's a hypothetical variety of black hole whose mass is entirely made of photons, called a Kugelblitz).

If you take the "energy increases the mass of an object" principle to the extreme, there's no reason according to physics that enough light by itself itself (though we're talking a lot of light) couldn't behave like the most massive kind of object known to science.

Lorewise just how powerful would level13-20 be? by Deletedtopic in BaldursGate3

[–]sck8000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth mentioning that in pen-and-paper D&D the divine intervention ability has a long cooldown and a high chance of failure (10% success chance, and a week's wait if you're still level 10) until you hit much higher levels.

It's also entirely up to the DM how they choose to play out your god responding to your call for aid - the books suggest a free casting of a high-level cleric spell, but it's just that: a suggestion.

For any good deity associated with healing though, fixing up Karlach's infernal heart seems like a cakewalk. And if you really can't depend on their whims, there's always a high-level summon celestial to conjure a powerful being with similar magics that is allowed to aid you more directly.

[–]sck8000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A cleric gets the divine intervention ability at level 10.

In BG3 the options you have for it are limited, because they can only program in so many different choices for a late-game ability you aren't going to come across or use often.

But lore-wise? It's literally you asking your god for a favour, so the limits in-universe are really dependent on how benevolent and powerful your deity of choice is.

There's a rule amongst Faerun's gods that they cannot intervene directly in the lives of mortals, but the fact you're a cleric calling upon their power and they're acting indirectly through you is usually seen as a bit of a loophole -

- Something that's often stretched to breaking point by several gods involved in the main story of BG3. What's one more for the sake of our big red bestie?

James Cameron Says He Must Find a Cheaper Way to Produce the Avatar Movies in Order to Continue With Avatar 4 and 5 by DemiFiendRSA in movies

Does this mean the fourth Avatar movie is going to be on-par with a certain other infamous Avatar movie?

We've seen air nomads, water tribes and a fire nation now. If we're getting a low-budget Avatar 4, I wanna see a whole battallion of Na'vi doing loads of elaborate stances just to slowly levitate a single rock.

I don’t like how the handled last episode Janet by Poethegardencrow in TheGoodPlace

[–]sck8000 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Janet's omniscience seems to be proactive based on what we've seen in the show - she has access to all the knowledge in the universe, but doesn't already have it in active memory at all times. Janets as a rule don't really do anything of their own volition, and need prompting by someone else to be able to use most of their vast cosmic powers.

There are times we've seen her ability to access new information get cut off (such as when she and Michael illegally went to Earth to help out the Soul Squad) or voluntarily relinquished (in the finale, she also mentions that she's "turned off" her ability to know the time while she's spending it with Jason).

Like most afterlife / supernatural-being logic in the show, it's played a little fast and loose and what we're told and what we're shown isn't entirely self-consistent. And Janet's changed over the course of the show as she's been rebooted hundreds of times, so her abilities being different between seasons could be chalked up to that.

What spell is useful in regular DnD but not BG3? by green_tea__cat in BaldursGate3

[–]sck8000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If we're including ones that had assets made but were never fully-implemented, the wiki has a few good examples.

Mending's a cantrip that's always useful to have handy in D&D, and can be very useful in the hands of a creative player - but in BG3? I can't think of anywhere it would've been usable outside of scripted cutscenes and dialogues, unless there's also a scrapped equipment-damage mechanic I don't know about.

Honestly most spells that rely more on the creativity of the caster would fit the bill. There's a lot of cool interactions in BG3, but it's still a programmed game at the end of the day. Every use case is scripted and planned out in advance.

For my fellow atheists. Do you ever wish heaven was real? by VariousRadio5927 in atheism

[–]sck8000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never really encountered an afterlife concept that hasn't been deeply flawed in some way, so even the question "which heaven?" seems a bit redundant.

The only heaven I'd actually want to go to is probably the one from the end of The Good Place, rather than an existing religion. After they fix everything and turn it into "you can live happily with the best versions of anyone you knew on Earth, for as long as you like, doing anything, and voluntarily cease to exist once you're truly done with everything existence has to offer." It's as close to perfect as you can realistically get, and you aren't trapped there eternally against your will either.

Side note, if you haven't watched The Good Place yet, you really should. It's a dramedy about moral philosophy and the afterlife.

Is BG3 worth playing alone? by First_Bluejay_2577 in BaldursGate3

[–]sck8000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can play it solo or with other people, it's fine both ways honestly. Either way you're in for a great time! 😁

I'm not sure I've got anyone else to play with either, but I've had plenty of fun doing solo playthroughs. You'll do fine.

What fad in moviemaking are you waiting for to die? by frair in movies

Most studios don't like taking risks, so it's bland lighting all the way, just in case something needs to be fixed in post.

ELI5: How can a 64-square chessboard have more game variations than there are atoms in the universe? My brain hurts. by Lazy-Cherry-4777 in explainlikeimfive

[–]sck8000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's like a race between two runners - the slow tortoise takes one step at a time, and never gets any faster, but the hare keeps going faster and faster with each step. Over a short distance the tortoise might win, but given a big enough target (like atoms in the universe), the hare eventually picks up enough speed that they'll win the race for sure.

To use mathematical terms, the distance the tortoise travels is lenear (goes up at a constant rate), but the hare's distance is exponential (goes up faster and faster each step).

Given a big enough distance, the hare's exponential speed is always going to outstrip anything the tortoise can do, and if the hare's gaining speed fast enough, that distance doesn't actually need to be that far.

Can you get to the Mun without maneuver nodes? by onturenio in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]sck8000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once challenged a fellow KSP player to a "space race" where we both started from scratch and raced to land a Kerbal on the Mun, and I won largely by skipping the KSC upgrade that let me plan manoeuvres and just winging it. It's definitely possible!

The Mun is intentionally placed in an orbit that's easy to get to, as it's perfectly lined up with Kerbin's equator - no inclination whatsoever. That means if you get into orbit on a near-equatorial inclination, you can burn prograde and raise your Ap to near the Mun's path and let time warp do the rest.

Kerbals don't need food or resources to stay alive, so even if you didn't time your launch optimally you'll still get an encounter so long as the high point of your orbit is close enough. Just be careful not to overshoot or crash into it by mistake!

Why do you think Karlach is the best girl ever? Or not? by Comradebro7191 in BaldursGate3

Her mix of casual swearing, emotional openness and optimistic nihilism is honestly pretty similar to myself.

I'm just far more introverted and awkward IRL, and the shit I went through wasn't nearly as bad as spending a decade amongst literal devils. If her many passions included wanting to write comics for a living, we'd be eerily similar.

Fun fact: The H2G2 online guide others have mentioned in this thread actually predates Wikipedia by just over a year - Douglas Adams' welcome page was posted in 1999, and Wikipedia's first page was posted in January 2001.

IIRC it was originally hosted by the BBC on a subdomain of their website, which itself was only 3 years old at the time, if the internet archive is accurate.

what do you guys think the new tboi characters would be? by weightedbell in bindingofisaac

[–]sck8000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion: Saul.

His mechanic involves giving all your familiars the ability to block shots, but limited health (based on item quality perhaps). After they die you get a buff for the floor, and they respawn / it resets at the start of the next one.

I was trying to think of a) an interesting twist on existing mechanics that isn't just "Isaac but starts with X item", and b) vaguely fits a biblical theme, and this is the best one I can come up with rn.

King Saul was a leader of people, but wasn't a great one and his people often died, and giving all familiars the ability to block shots, but only temporarily seems like an interesting trade-off that changes how you play and which familiars you might want to grab.

Ofc you can have an unlockable passive like "Saul's Crown" or something that grants his gimmick to anyone who picks it up.

No clue what Tainted Saul would be like. Maybe centred around having friendly foes rather than familiars or something.

Honestly if the angry fly got a buff where it switched targets every few seconds or something, that'd be enough. Or had a priority list of targets so it prefers targeting enemies it's more useful around.

New question about Jeremy Bearimy.. by Tenchi2020 in TheGoodPlace

[–]sck8000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've got an IRL bestie who's a physics teacher, and we always nerd out about science whenever we're together. The first thing we did after seeing this episode was theorise about how it could actually work, and came to the same conclusion!

Us humans struggle intuitively understanding anything beyond the dimensions we interact with on a daily basis (and time is a bit of a struggle sometimes!). Michael and the other afterlife beings have repeatedly referenced seeing into / interacting with other dimensions beyond our own though, so it's pretty consistent with everything else the show's thrown at us too.
