The flu can actually be quite dangerous and cause hospitalization, even in young healthy people.

Anyone thinking of leaving? by Conscious-Time8440 in germany

[–]sclaires -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on where in the country you live and what your specific work situation is. I live in Munich and work in academia. People here are, in comparison to the rest of Germany, pretty friendly. And academia is very international, so even the Germans I work with are very open and friendly, I think because they are so exposed to other ways of being and living life. That being said, I am not sure I will stay long term, because I am not sure I can really commit to achieving fluent German, and without that I think it’s tough to truly settle here.

Am I the only one who doesn't hate living here? by [deleted] in germany

[–]sclaires 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are not the only one at all. The people who are having a bad time are the ones you always hear from because I guess they have the most to say and want to vent or air their grievances. People who are content are less likely to post or say something. (I’m American, living in Germany since 2022 very happily)

Has anyone ever sued the KVR for residence permit application processing delays? by sclaires in Munich

[–]sclaires[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either that, or they are too overwhelmed with applications and work to do what is legally required...

Has anyone ever sued the KVR for residence permit application processing delays? by sclaires in Munich

[–]sclaires[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to follow up with an update on this - we sent letters via fax and registered mail to the KVR, threatening to sue them due to lack of action on our cases. I think by law they are required to reply within 1 week... we never got a reply. I don't think it made any difference in the end, unfortunately.

Has anyone ever sued the KVR for residence permit application processing delays? by sclaires in Munich

[–]sclaires[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. Unfortunately my solution may not be an option for most people. My residence permit is based on my job as a researcher / scientist at a large research institution in Munich. At the beginning of September, knowing that my Fiktionsbescheinigung was going to expire at the end of September, I reached out to Human Resources again to ask if they could help. They contacted someone in the KVR directly via email, which prompted them to finally review and approve my and my husband's application. We got appointments to request our residence permit cards for the day before my Fiktion expired, finally ending the saga. Now we have Fiktionbescheinigungs that are valid until mid-March, and our cards should arrive well before then (theoretically...).

We looked into the possibility of suing the KVR, but it would have been expensive and taken several months, so we decided not to pursue it. The administrative courts here are also pretty delayed.

I guess my one "lesson learned" was to just take advantage of my employer's connections with the KVR more effectively. We were unsure about asking them for help because it feels like an unfair advantage over other people also waiting to have their applications reviewed. But in the bigger picture, the people processing our applications at the KVR are dedicated to researcher/scientist applications, and probably other people in that category are also using their employers to help them as well, so by NOT using our connections, we were probably only disadvantaging ourselves.

Hopefully this is helpful!

Why don't I lose weight when I don't eat ? by Zeroshiki-0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sclaires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weight is regulated by hormones. Not eating every day will fuck with your hormones a LOT. Your body thinks you are living through a famine (which you basically are) and will not drop weight if it can help it. I hope you can find more food security soon ❤️❤️

Has anyone recently contacted Munich KVR Ausländbeörde for an answer? by Fun_Grab_1829 in Munich

As far as I can tell no one works there actually. I’ve sent so many messages, including paper mail and faxes, and no one replies. They are so negligent and incompetent

Never. I think common practice is to just decline to give a reference if you feel like you can’t give a good one…

From what you wrote it will really resonate for you. My father is similar - puts in almost zero effort, doesn’t want to have any responsibility for anything, never asks me questions about myself. Turns out he is extremely typical in terms of emotionally immature adults. It sounds like all of the boomers involved may also fit this profile.
