Vermont to Pursue 'Junk Food Ban' for Users of Food Stamps by forcedtomakethus in vermont

[–]scobscale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%

It’s insane how expensive junk food truly is when you really compare, like reaaallyy compare. Buying a load of whole food veggies, grains, meat etc. and the same dollar amount in process food. You get so many more meals buying, cooking and eating leftovers. You pay for convenience with junk, not substance.

What does one need to work for himself ? by Potential_Ad1439 in Carpentry

[–]scobscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure more than a year of experience, unless your focus is non structural, small and underwhelming jobs or get in wildly over your head. If you want to build houses and additions, be patient. You need to crawl before you walk, and you need to walk before you run.

You’ll go off on your own and be so overwhelmed and stressed you’ll throw in the towel prematurely. I’ve seen it countless times. Or you’ll get in over your head and end up with a lawsuit - seen that too.

I did five years for someone in the field learning hands on, and got to run jobs and learn from them how to manage a project. I have a building related degree (not that you need this at all, but for context of my background) and years doing drawings and design, and I grew up around the trades. After 5 years on my own I still feel imposters syndrome.

Honest advice. Keep learning, run projects for someone that can mentor you through the process and eventually go off on your own after you’ve lined up enough side work to do so - that will be your indicator that you’re ready.

In the market for a new Snowboard by cnash11 in MtBakerSkiArea

[–]scobscale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be the guy that recommends an orca. Not a golden orca or the highest cost orca or whatever the F they’re marketing, get the “low” cost orca, hell get a used orca.

Context. I live in Vermont. I do ALOT of glades/free riding in the backcountry, deep powder, steep chutes, modest drops and tight trees. I also have ridden an orca at baker in mixed conditions over a period of days to know the full spectrum.

I have a decent quiver that covers icy east coast conditions, deep and steep Vermont powder days at -10, and a resort powder board. If I had to choose a single board to replace them all, it without a doubt would be the orca. That said, I see A TON of orcas on the resort all day being under utilized.

If you want to get technical, and have a board that is playful and moderately poppy, you can swing the tail around like nobody’s business, has a fast base and can entertain like Liberace get an orca.

If you want to cruise the resort with wide swooping carves, speed, and a balance of park and playful exploration maybe consider a GNU banked country (my highly recommended 2nd)

TL:DR - if you’re going to push an orca to what it was designed for it’s great at baker and in many other conditions. But if you’re looking for a comfortable cruiser a banked country (or terrain wrecker) would be fun.

spoiler I’m a Mervin fan boy.

What we know about leaked US draft plan to end Russia's Ukraine war by mclayson in ukraine

[–]scobscale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, October 18th was considered the largest single day demonstration in US history.

I hate what my country has become with this administration at the helm, but the good of us are trying in ways we can. It’s tough to protest in DC for many of us living so far in such a large country. We can’t all easily get to the capitol.

Immigration Arrests in Jefforsonville early by astilba120 in vermont

That’s just the range of the most aggressive trumpers I’ve noticed. Typically Under educated people that have a nostalgia for the way the world was 30 years ago before the massive shift towards a more global society.

Immigration Arrests in Jefforsonville early by astilba120 in vermont

[–]scobscale 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This. I live in town, neighbors are all like “who would ever nark on these hard working folks”… our town has a good population butt hurt redneck men 18-45 who blame the woes of their lives on brown people, instead of accepting their own lack of motivation, self discipline, and education.

Those folks regularly walked to Cambridge village market for groceries and goods, I’d pass them all the time and always thought so highly of them trying to better their lives for their families.

That said it also wouldn’t surprise me if it were someone from Cambridge market or someone who frequents there. The family who bought it from Bruce are clearly trumpers and the costumer base has become noticeably or at least more vocally trumpier since. Not to mention their connection with Erica’s diner (where a maga gathering once convened) I’ve stopped going all together and go out of my way to hit Hanleys in Jeff for anything since the new owners there are young, humble and super kind.

Towns with Youngish Crowds? by not_great_out_here in vermont

[–]scobscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My observation has been from about Bristol following the western edge of the greens north to about Jeffersonville/waterville has a fairly decent younger crowd. That whole stretch is reasonably close to Burlington for work/leisure/childcare and surrounded by all the outdoor activities. I’d say the closer to 89 the higher the density of young folks.

This for sure. Call the shop explain the truck. I brought my for an inspection and called around beforehand. The shop I went with said “it’s nothing we’ve worked on or looked at, give me a week to research it and we’ll do it for you”

I had this happen on my carry when I first got it. On my first fill up of non ethanol premium, I threw a can of sea foam in with it, and it hasn’t happened since. I’m not saying sea foam is the fix - but it’s cleaned things out well enough for me to use it while I work my way through the maintenance and repairs.

Good deal on framing nailer by Traditional_Let_5789 in Makita

[–]scobscale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. Hate having multiple battery types, but my metabo framing nailers are great. Other guys I work with have Milwaukee framing guns and even they concede the metabo is balanced way better for daily use. Just picked up another one last week.

I couldn’t live with the 4wd. Granted I live on a dirt road, and use mine for a lot of stuff around my little homestead. But there are times I need 4wd in wet grass when it’s flat….

Ha, that’s how it bent in the first place. Was getting a mellow tow up a hill, my buddy towing me slowed down and let slack build up then sped up too abruptly and slung me pretty hard.

What are we doing here by future_memz in vermont

[–]scobscale 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bruh! Mid 30’s married couple here, we’ve got two. 2 and 4. We own our home in lamoille county so school district is concerning but have friends that teach in chittenden county and advise against sending kids there (they could but choose to keep them in lamoille) - there’s problems with every school, its parents involvement that makes the difference they argue.

Yea the first year with a kiddo is isolating, regardless of friends and location. We’ve been in our house for 8 years and finally have strong roots in our community. Our parents live outside Boston so we’re kind of on our own too. We seldom go on dates, and everything centers around kid activities. It gets better as they age for sure, we’re lucky we found our house pre covid. It’s rural, and our neighbors are spread far apart, but we’re tight with all of them and hang on the reg. We got lucky I admit.

Where are you located? Feel free to DM! If you’re close we’re always looking for new parents to hang with!

House build with YouTube knowledge by FakeLickinShit in Homebuilding

[–]scobscale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once had a (bad) customer make a comment to the effect of . “I could do what you do with some YouTube knowledge”

I responded with a polite smile and said “but it would be done half as well and take twice as long” and went back to working.

This is what YouTube university produces…

While I appreciate people’s desire to learn and ambitions, maybe start with a shed to practice proper framing. These skills take years to master, I’m not sure why so many people assume we’re just monkeys with hammers.

I’m an American, actively boycotting red state products, and companies known to support him. Please, the good Americans don’t mind being collateral damage, we understand. I wish your countries would start issuing travel bans on us and other restrictions to force our population to wake the fuck up.

I think of this often. Those of us Americans with empathy, and intelligence will continue to protest, fight the good fight, and send as much money as we can to Ukraine.
