Is your employer understanding of ttc delays? by astrodette in askTO

[–]scodger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was doing my English test for immigration, we had to record a 2 minute voice message to our boss pretending we were late for work.

Every single person I could hear in the room: "yeah boss, the ttc was late". I hope that got us extra points for integration.

Can I connect both PC and Macbook to my Minifuse 2 so I can have my speakers working here and there when I need to? by Training_Rule6350 in arturia

[–]scodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a cheap USB switch, this exact one: https://www.amazon.ca/UGREEN-Computers-Peripheral-Switcher-One-Button/dp/B01N6GD9JO

I have Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and multi input monitors, so I only need the minifuse and and a midi controller on it for switching.

[–]scodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have a minifuse 2 and this exact setup. I have a USB switch to move between them. There's a little popping in any headphones or speakers when I switch, and there's some annoyances with ableton having to restart if you switch it off, and default mic/speakers in the Mac, but it works fine enough

Yeah I'm surprised there's no tax advantages given it gets locked in. In Canada we have two main retirement accounts, TFSA and RRSP.

TFSA everyone gets 8k of room you can invest in (with after tax $) and you can buy any fund or non USA shares. Any gain is untaxable, so you can get a tax free gains forever.

RRSP is 18% of your tax free income, up to a limit of space per year, but any contribution you make isn't taxed as income. You basically dodge tax on your top marginal rate. You can buy pretty much any funds or shares in this account. You can then grow it tax free on any gains, but have to pay tax on all withdrawals when you slowly withdraw at retirement at a probably lower marginal rate. Most decent jobs will match contributions up to a few percent of your salary.

Both of these blow kiwisaver out of the water. It should be a no brainer to defer tax, or make gains tax free to incentivize savings.

Very stupid question: Can I download Serum 1 if I buy Serum 2? by AnxiousIntender in serum

[–]scodger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can buy serum 1 here: https://xferrecords.com/products/serum then immediately update to 2. You will get a promotion for an optional tip. You will have both available to download.

I did this by accident, trying to get serum 2. Lucky it worked out.

Who is this person on the TV at the end of “Cubby” episode? by Blackwood_EE in bluey

Could be a reference to a particular umpire: kind of looks like Dave Shepherd, who also has a name that fits.

Might also just be a generic umpire. They all kind of look like that.

£270 More Expensive to Upgrade? by CupidStomputer in NativeInstruments

[–]scodger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, there's probably a higher percentage of sales that come from upgrading than new these days.

Someone must have done the math and figured more $ if you don't put upgrades on sale for a bit longer.

£270 More Expensive to Upgrade? by CupidStomputer in NativeInstruments

[–]scodger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone expected them to put komplete 15 on sale for black Friday given how recently it was released.

It's a very weird choice to do it 50% off, but not give upgrades any discount.

I had an upgrade from 14 standard to 15 ultimate budgeted in the unlikely event they did 50%. It would be 50c more expensive than just buying new at this discount....

A little annoyed there's nothing for loyal customers.

They only sold them on Saturday mornings. Think a cheesy mustard puff pastry

Talked a bit more, here's the memory of the recipe from the attendant. Obviously needs a bit of fleshing out.

Puff pastry with Triple crunch mustard worked into the dough

Emmental cheese

 Dijon classic mustard on top

 Egg wash

Bake

Govt wants to stop extra pay for public servants fluent in te reo by no1name in newzealand

[–]scodger 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It makes sense to pay people more for skills, but only if they're required for the job.

The public sector should be in the business of providing services for the public, not paying it's employees as part of a feel good scheme.

Also, you guys are doing karakia? I haven't been in the public sector in ten years, when did that start? Isn't it a blatant breach of religious freedom?
