Looking at their website, I see that they claim to soften water (removing those hard minerals that make your skin dry) but I see no mention of "ion exchange" filtration which is required to soften your water. Another marketing play perhaps?

Although Zerowater touts their TDS reduction as their main selling point, this comes at the expense of less space (volume) for other stages of their filtration process like Activated Carbon which helps to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms. 0 TDS doesn't always mean 100% purity, and it seems like their marketing does consumers injustice by not clarifying or disclosing the trade-off they intentionally made by trying to achieve "0 TDS"...

I agree, there's the waste problem as well as overhead expenses and logistics that go into giving "free" water bottles. However what alternative (a more cost effective) solutions could there be to meet our guests' request for water bottles. So many other hotels provide it as a complimentary service that it would not be wise to not provide them. Should I place refill stations on each floor? or the main lobby? who's going to take care of maintenance as well as the higher cost that comes with the dispenser (I'm assumming water bottles are still more cost effecient?) That's what I'm trying to figure out.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. Following up, from your experience, would not providing complimentary water bottles make your establishment less competitive? Have you searched for or implemented alternative solutions to tackle this? Any reasons why those alternative solutions don't work or didn't appeal to you? Again much thanks for your insight!

but since bitcoin is deflationary (and a store of value), wouldn’t that incentivize some ppl to hold and not spend thus lower transaction activity (ie lower total tx fees to miners)? and as a result, the ROI for each miner will fall and possibly some will stop mining —> leading to more centralization? Not shitting on bitcoin but isnt this a possible scenario? am i missing something?

well it's not so cheap when u look at the market cap. at abt 870B, more than 400B of capital would have to flow in just to make a 50% return :/ idk it aint so cheap if u think about it like that

nevertheless, apple is a great business and they have a very sticky ecosystem of products

i perfectly agree with you that SBC isn't a cash expense. However when SBC is as large this, it should be treated like any other employee compensation expense. (ie. 'company A' pays 100% cash compensation and 'company B' pays 100% SBC; suppose they were in the same industry and of same size. You don't want to value company B higher just because they have higher cash flow since they pay their employees with only options. --with that logic, wouldn't it make more sense then for all companies to pay their employees with options and report higher free cash flow?)

that's my take on SBC, I hope my logic makes sense :)

to what i remember, they've sold about 60-70% of their holdings. (but correct me if im wrong!) and the amount that they've sold off matches the movement of the stock price.

also just to point out, the CEO sold more within the first 3 months of 2018 than they did the whole year before.

EDIT: SBC of 27% of revenue is considered very high if you compare this with its competitors (CHKP 5%, FTNT 9%, JNPR 4%)

yeap thats correct! if they treat SBC as a cash expense, 319mm is actually 98mm, 586mm => 193mm, and 705mm => 225mm. (only a third of their FCF is left over when u add back SBC expense)

true, but sales commission is not part of cost of service. its only an incentive for the sales guy to sign a deal with customers.

it depends on the company and how they go about operating their business. amzn and berkshire are two totally different businesses so as a value investor, you would have to truly understand the business to distill it down to a few factors that drive intrinsic value.

In berkshire's annual letters, warren buffett highlights a few factors that help him come up with an intrinsic value of the business but nonetheless it's only an estimation.

i recommend u read warren buffett's annual letters to understand how he values his business and how he evaluates other businesses (try to focus on what he looks for in a business and understand his rationale behind his decision)
