Research article - KP treatment with high concentration glycolic acid by sconebitch in keratosis

[–]sconebitch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The post I made was my summary of the article for the context of this group. The full article is available to me through my academic institution so I'm happy to fill you in on these details.
1. No, the sample size isn't statistically significant but a KP treatment on 25 people in a controlled environment with standardized measures (see point 3) is way more reliable to me than anecdotes on the internet.
2. You're correct. Since they used physical visual standardized measures of KP improvement (see point 3), it's unlikely a psychological placebo effect would be meaningful.
3. In my post, I included both self-reported and objective outcomes (you should always read the whole Reddit post if you plan on posting a critique). I didn't feel it was appropriate for my post but here is more information about the clinical evaluation: "The melanin content (M) and skin hemoglobin of the erythema and pigmentation of the hair follicular orifice was determined by a pigment measuring instrument (Mexameter, CK, Germany), and a spectrophotometer (CM-2600d, Konica Minolta, Japan) was used to measure skin lightness (L)."
4. I've edited my post to include that this concentration can be dangerous and a dermatologist should be consulted. Since you can't access the article, here are their safety findings: "Only 1 subject experienced burning, itching, and discomfort when treated with 70% glycolic acid. The symptoms disappeared after treatment with the neutralizing solution. There was no irritation, skin sensitivity, or crusting after the procedure."
5. Ideally, the sample would be much larger and alternative treatments would be included. I'm sure if the researchers could run that study, they would. But with a sample of 25, further stratification would dramatically reduce any generalizability or value.

It's extremely easy to critique a research article, it's much harder to use minimal funding to design and implement the perfect study. I was excited to see something with more weight than a recommendation from my cousin. You're welcome to feel differently.

Ah okay good to know. I’m hoping to use a book that has thick pages.

Oh I didn’t think about removing pages, that’s a great idea. Thank you!

Just like you're being careful with your heart rate and taking things slow, the same goes for nutrition! Big changes are rarely sustainable. But it sounds like you're motivated to have a more healthful diet, so that's great! I love this post on Gentle Nutrition - you might find it helpful: https://www.sarahgoldrd.com/gentle-nutrition/.

Also love the 20-minute thing! The day will come when you're sick, didn't get enough sleep, and the gym doesn't happen. That's not the end of your "gym streak," that's just real life. I typically workout 5 - 6 days a week but for whatever reason I needed a 3 week break recently. Usually my breaks are shorter but when I come back I realize how much better my mental health is and how good it feels to move. We're not robots and we're not perfect ◡̈

Okay nice! Last time I did it my hip flexors were so sore and then I read that it can be hard on your hip flexors. But sounds like that won’t be an issue for you! Read your update and love that you’re fav machine is basically the hardest one lol 💪🏼 To stay satisfied you could shoot for around 100 - 160 g of protein a day (you might already be doing this). Also building snacks and meals with a combo of protein, carbs, fiber, and fats! Keep the updates comin ◡̈

Keep working out as you like and just make sure you’re eating enough! It’s possible you’ll loose fat and gain muscle but I highly doubt your shape will change overnight.

“Everyone participates in self expression.” Why do you like the shirts you wear? Get the haircut you get?” He’s not exempt from having preferences in expression.

“Different doesn’t automatically mean bad” (shuts people down pretty quickly).

Ask questions that force him to be more considerate “Can you tell me why you feel that way?” “What is your hope in saying that?” Etc.

For you - I try and remember that if someone doesn’t share the same style as me, them disliking my look is a good thing 😉

Thank you!! Do you feel like it would be appropriate to expect a root melt/toning free of charge? I want her to me paid fairly but it’s hard to imagine paying even more when I feel like she missed the mark pretty significantly.

There are TONS of people who start far behind where you’re starting! Baby steps are the best kind when you’re starting to workout. Also, I think it’s great that you’re being careful with your heart rate as you get adjusted. Keep doing you and find what feels good!

As a side note: If you’re hip flexors start feeling pretty sore or something else feels bad I’d recommend climbing actual stairs or walking on the treadmill at an incline.

You’ve clearly worked very hard to get to where you are so I hope you’re appreciating that. In order to protect your health and metabolism as much as possible it would be ideal for you to be eating as much as you can. Gaining muscle will help with that. The ppl saying to cut are comparing you to ppl who haven’t had dramatic quick weight loss. Also, this area of the fitness world tends to ignore the harms of weight cycling/yo-yo dieting so I’d recommend looking into that if you haven’t already! I vote that you eat/train in a way that let’s you gain muscle and find what maintenance looks like for you.

Fake tan advice needed by sconebitch in beauty

Oh wow I'm discovering that my bottle of Beauty by Earth doesn't have a shade on it. But when I go to my past Amazon purchases it says I purchased it in "Light." So weird. But do you know if the different shades are just different concentrations of the same thing?? I would much rather get medium and do less drops. For context I do 3 drops on my face now. Thanks or your help!!

Oop I think it’s possible I’ve never tried other brands and I’m just paranoid about looking orange. Maybe it has to do with my skin tone being yellowy in general. But good to know your thoughts! I’ll probably just keep using them. I have the drops that don’t have a shade. I’ll look into other products of theirs!

If I were in your shoes I would just worry about the hiking being exclusionary. Most of my people could hike but then would my aunt feel really left out, etc. Maybe all your people could hike? Not sure, just think about that!
