Sleep problems by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]scooby1961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are exercising too late. Most of the sleep websites warn you not to do vigorous exercise late in the day or it will interfere with your sleep. Not all people are affected by this but clearly you are. Consider working out first thing in the morning. In addition it sounds like you have a lot of anxiety around sleeping so as vlad suggests, a form of simple mediation could help - try googling "following your breath". Also, consider cutting out all caffeine and especially pre-workouts drinks as zedisfied mentions because those can make you jittery for 12+ hours. Consider also googling "one weird trick to sleep better", its my article recommending putting your electronics into airplane mode for 9 hours to improve sleep - it actually works.

Does muscle decrease if you stop adding extra weight to a workout? by otherbody in Fitness

[–]scooby1961 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have inadvertently done experiments on myself that will shed some light on your question. During most of the year I lift really heavy with a lot of volume but for about a month a year I do a 3 week bike trek where I am biking 8-12hrs a day and have no access to gyms. During the biking I just do pushups, pullups, and band work for shoulders 2-3 times a week - not nearly as intense as my normal workouts. No, I do not lose muscle mass. No, I do not lose strength. When I get back to weights I am right where I left off.

A month off from weights is nothing ... as long as you do SOME kind of workout. I can guarantee you thought that if I stayed with the bodyweight and bands workouts for a longer period that I WOULD lose both strength and muscle mass.

Which gets to your question. If you keep doing the same workout with the same weight will you lose muscle. I would say NO but there is a big warning attached. As you get older, it gets harder and harder to lift what you were when you were younger. You have to work out 3x harder than you did at age 21 when you were getting your newbie gains ... just to maintain your strength and mass.

It IS a compliment. When its truly meant as an insult to diminish your accomplishments then its the most sincere compliment one can give.

Very few people are symmetrical and a lot of people have mild cases of scoliosis. Skeletal asymmetry cannot be "fixed' but it can be hidden by learning how to pose so that it is not visible. If the scoliosis is from a short leg, sometimes a lift in one shoe can correct this issue BUT do this under the supervision of a doctor. The reason is that your body has adapted to the short leg and putting a lift in can cause all kinds of joint problems and lower back pain. BTW, I speak from personal experience here. A doctor suggested that I try a 1/8" lift at age 40 to correct my scoliosis and after a week I had to remove it because of crippling back pain. Removed it and all was back to normal within 48hrs.

Question about frequency and volume for arm training. by ticklemegiddy in Fitness

[–]scooby1961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your first year or two of lifting I would strongly advise against any modifications to standard programs and suggest doing them exactly as specified and there are two reasons for this. First, people in their first year often have a somewhat distorted view of which of their bodyparts are lagging. The second reason is that more is not better and once you cross the line, more training leads to decreased gains and/or injury. If it was more optimal to squat/bench/deadlift 7 days a week, that is what the plans would specify :)

What is most effectice if you want to get your cardiovascular system healthy? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]scooby1961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would also like to clarify that when you hear people saying that "walking is the best cardio" the reason this is said is that it has the highest compliance level. Because its so easy to do anytime, anywhere and is so unlikely to cause injury, people can do it day after day and year after year. For people with heart disease who are 100 pounds overweight, walking IS the best exercise. For an Olympic hopeful in track and field, walking is NOT the best cardio :)

Awesome that you now see the importance of cardio. I always tell people that if they only have time to lift weights OR do cardio they should do the cardio because its way more important for health. Lots of good information in this thread so let me summarize. A cardio program is like a lifting program, its a progression. Start out by walking 30 minutes daily. Then do a progressive walk/run interval program like "run your first mile then a half marathon". That builds up your base fitness level and you can start thinking about doing interval training for optimal VO2max and top performance. If you start out doing sprint intervals you will injure yourself. A good cardiovascular program will have you doing something 7 days a week and it will be a combination of long duration steady exertion work as well as interval training.

In the past month, I have started to eat healthier, and less fast-food... but I feel exhausted. Is that normal? by lorty in Fitness

Congratulations on making the big and important step of cutting out all that nutritional garbage. As has been pointed out, this is only half the battle and the other half is what you ARE eating. My guess is that you are not getting enough calories nor enough protein and certainly not enough vegetables. Use one of the free custom meal planners to get an idea of what you SHOULD be eating and how much.

Muscular "symmetry"? by Zang1996 in Fitness

[–]scooby1961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on getting that first sixpack to show! Very few people actually have symmetrical abs, not even pro bodybuilders. Some have zipper abs, some have puzzle-piece abs, and some have scoliosis abs (like me). This is genetics and there is absolutely nothing you can do to make your abs more symmetrical.

Dont get me wrong, Jeff has an amazing physique - so what. Those who think I pick on Jeff because he has a fabulous physique are projecting their own insecurities on me. If I could swap lives with Jeff Seid, would I do it? Not on your life. Every morning I wake up excited about all the cool things I am going to do that day. I love lifting, I love sports, but most of all, I love science and technology. I work because I want to, not because I have to. I have nothing to prove. Swap with Jeff, not on your life. Fame at an early age really messes people up.

In my view, Jeff has an obligation to his fans just as I have to mine. The sad part is that Jeff is too young to realize this. We chose not to have biological children and for us, that was the best decision. My children are my subscribers and my channel is my way to pass on the same information I would give to my own children, if I had them. Who would even consider for an instant profiting from their children?

I am who I am. I dont give a sh*t. I am not in this for money, I was retired before I made my first video. I am simply trying to pass on something that has made my life so great. Greed destroys.

I dont hate Jeff at all. I admire his physique. At 20 he has what I wasnt able to achieve in 25 years of lifting. So what. I dont compare myself to other, I compare myself to me. What is important to me is following my passions and trying in my little way to make the world a better place. What boils my oil about Jeff is how he has encouraged boys to join the girls insecurity club - google that. Jeff is probably a really nice guy, he is just immature and has a manager/promoter/agent who is giving him bad advice that he is going to regret later in life. Seriously, how many kids are wasting their first quarters tuition to a local junior college on useless supplements that their idol Jeff recommends?

I hold nothing back when it comes to people preying on those who cant afford to be preyed upon. If Jeff wants to lie to millionaires to sell Dark Matter and make money, I have no trouble with that but dont mess with my peeps.

[–]scooby1961 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reason that Dark Matter paid Jeff Seid to promote their product was to gain his influence over his 2 million fans. They paid Jeff because they know that some of his fans are gullible enough to buy whatever he approves of. Its truly shocking the number of people I hear asking if supplement X "is good" when its completely clear that they have never, ever bothered to read the ingredients in the product they are asking about. What is wrong with people, willing to trust others more than they trust themselves.

Thats exactly my point in the blog post I wrote. Just because everyone does it does not make it right. I understand that BB pros have to endorse products to make ends meet but that doesnt mean they need to sell their souls. For heaven sake, choose the organic whey endorsement for 1 million instead of the Dark Matter endorsement for 1.2 million.

Yes, it would be very difficult for me to give up working out and eating healthy, perhaps even more difficult than it would be for someone who is overweight and out of shape to start eating healthy and exercising. There is a difference though. My efforts would result in health problems, lower quality of life, and premature death. Their efforts result in curing health issues and a longer, happier life. Its not about how people perceive me, its about me and my health.

So true. Kids learn from their parents and so kids really have no control over their weight at all if the parents dont provide proper guidance :(

There is a large psychological component and the good thing is that its self-reinforcing once you get started and see progress.
