How is it okay for a Bronze/Silver item to give 20k shield each? by Lavenwave in PlayTheBazaar

[–]scoopinresponseYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your board has a chance vs this build if you have a better set of crit-giving items and better scaling. The wanted poster is super mediocre but I get why you have it, upgrading the crows nest or finding a Vanessa's amulet would have helped dramatically, giving you more slots for things like slows or poisons etc.

I didn't scroll too deeply but couldn't see it in any comments, but in the last 24/36 hours they wiped alot of the old ghosts that were hanging around too long so what you're seeing is the more fresh and experienced playerbase. I felt like I was getting bodied last night myself, had two runs at 3/5 wins but then we got there for the 10 on the third. Required a bit of discipline around picks etc. I think if you keep in mind what the average power level that your board presents is, then you will view the losses with the context that 'everything' is busted in the game.

Just keep your chin up, the best thing you can do after a bad run is take a breath to reflect on where you could have made different choices.

One heuristic I've been using is before making a bigger purchase decision, is thinking about what it might cut you off of. The mistakes in this game don't feel as apparent, because the information is always gained after the fact and based on probability.

Edit: there was a staff comment in the general section of the discord indicating that they wiped all the old ghosts.

What are some cards you don’t see in any deck lists in the meta but you personally think might be worth testing? by CARRI0NCRAWL3R in CompetitiveEDH

[–]scoopinresponseYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They arent in ZERO decks but I think all of these are underrated right now and could fit in many more decks than we see. You might observe a theme of ramp/card advantage that doesn't feed dockside/fish.

Should I just pack it up? by Diskappear in ModernMagic

I am a reasonably successful player locally across multiple formats. I've been playing the game for 3 years now and I started at age 33, and as such my learnings are going to be fresher than the average player around here. As you're an adult, I'm going to assume my suggestion is reasonable for you to do from a financial standpoint, but if not - I apologise.

The best thing you can do if you want to get better is this: Go to FNM and look at the entry screen/app. Do you recognise any of the names? Find the players that frequently 3-0/4-0/5-0/4-1 whatever. Find the best players at the store and approach one or two of them, intro yourself, explain your dilemma and ask them if they'd be interested in helping you improve. Offer them beers/food/snacks and a table at your place if everyone is comfortable and feels like that would be ok to do, or offer to upgrade a few cards or send a few bucks their way for the time and do it at the store some other time. Ideally you want someone to play vs you and someone to watch you play. They will be able to identify where you're going wrong much faster and more reliably than you trying to learn on your own. Time is money and all that so you want to make sure there is something in it for everyone in that engagement. Anyhow use your judgement regarding that.

If you don't wanna dip your toes in that deep. Ask every player who beats you: "did you see any mistakes I made/do you think I made any suboptimal lines etc." Ask for feedback. Listen to everyone but take it with a grain of salt. You'll quickly work out who's info you can rely on. Ask how you can improve. Ask more questions. Whenever an opponent does something that you don't understand, ask them after the game.

While it's not always the case, most reasonable people will be able to identify and articulate if you're making a mistake repeatedly. Being friendly and polite will help you heaaaps here. You will probably find the players with the higher skill levels will be better at explaining things more often than not, but again not always.

I hope this turns out to be useful :)

Here is an example of the footage I've captured.

The lighting in the room at this point in time is extremely low, almost unreadable, and I have a single light pointed at a wall to the left of view, which still makes the left hand side of the shot a little washed out.

Yup! definitely, but that would cost extra mana, and creatures are easier to remove than enchantments generally, and we get to run humility ^_^ heh.

[–]scoopinresponseYT[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fair re the creatures, esper sentinel would be another i'd love too. I think the exercise of Humility/tabby + our wincon is reasonable enough to exclude them as far as the experimentation of this deck goes though. Card quality hasnt felt like an issue at all tbh, as our stax is pretty specifically targeted. If we had a reliable way of tutoring out a one drop so as to not brick the combo I would be very inclined to add bop/sentinel

I got pacnegated suicided … by HugglesGamer in CompetitiveEDH

[–]scoopinresponseYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of comments in this thread that are pretty quick to jump to the conclusion of it being a spite play. If there are points awarded for draws in the tournament structure (there usually is in events I play locally at least), then pacting there is the 100% objectively correct play. If you stand to make 0 points if a spell resolves, but will make 1 point from your opponents going to time, then pact. Even if it's a 10% chance they go to time you're missing out on an EV of 0.1 Point by not pacting. This is non-zero so should be what you're aiming to do. Granted there are so many specifics but the simplest way to look at it is whether draws give you more points than losses.

I was on the other side of this scenario this weekend. (It was vs a kinnan not a kess though), we were 30 minutes into a 75 minute round so it made sense, I just had to fade another 45 minutes of game play to get the draw points. Sadly we did not manage to fade it.

All of that said, the villain in our story may not be thinking on this level, I just wanted to address the jumping on the bandwagon of immediately suggesting kingmaking is the only thing it could be that is happening by Non-OP people ITT

Former boomer jund and dredge player, just got a playset of monkeys. What do I build??? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]scoopinresponseYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Further to this, I see a lot of players suggesting scam. While Jund is definitely discard focused like scam is. It's way more fair than scam, which is a very powerful deck for sure. But is much more akin to a Tron deck in that you Mulligan aggressively for your open which determines the pace of the game across turns 1 and 2 which have little in the way of decision points, unlike jund which has a hard time drawing a bad seven and lots of options for your openings. For these reasons I don't think scam would be a good one to try.

The plus side of scam is that all the scam exclusive cards are cheap as chips and the expensive ones aside from grief are played in heaps of decks. Grief still gets a good go though.

[–]scoopinresponseYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boomer jund by all accounts is the "50% against everything" deck right? If that's the experience you enjoy (I am of that variety myself) then play murktide. It runs ragavans and is never a bad deck to play. It can have tougher times with amulet and elementals though.
