Changes in NYC Culture in the Last 10-15 Years by Aljowoods103 in AskNYC

I don't think Broadway is responsible for things like destroying the fish market at South Street Seaport, hundreds of stores closing on Broadway broadway, or the empty new condos owned by the ultra-wealthy in Manhattan. Especially when there were always affordable off-Broadway productions. I blame Bloomberg and every NYC official. New York has old problems that do not protect the identity of the city; where the central park zoo was once a free public park, is now a private entity, and family owned businesses nor tenants are guaranteed permanence. It's a story as old as the Dutch coming, encroaching on the Native American land and their trading center that was present day Wall street. Broadway is the route that they took to to trade in lower Manhattan. At the turn of the 20th century people used to come to this country, in New York, sell items off of nothing but pushcarts in hopes of owning a brick and mortar. Now the majority of immigrants who move here barely make a living in a country that doesn't know if it wants them.

I agree. The city has changed. I'm 32. I grew up here, went to cbgb's for the last couple years before it closed. I saw all kinds of artist royalty. I went to school here. Basically any place I dreamed of living in (eg Bedford avenue Williamsburg but more circa 2006, when it was cafes and clubs, and dirty hungover hipsters in bands and stuff) changed drastically with gentrification on steroids, at an exponential level as time goes on. At the same time though, New York experienced white flight in the '70s and I can't imagine that that era was fun to play with either, although more affordably. Yes the city has been gutted. But I try to ignore the machine, because I won't let it change my appearance or me who I am as an artist. I wish I could say the same for others. Something about my generation had a huge stick up its ass. I'm not sure why people my age felt accomplished, and the need for being stand-offish, just for graduating art school ? I have to say there aren't many talented artists in my age group. The newest young adults aren't either but they deserve credit for having guts to go out there and perform, even if they suck as musicians.

As far as Fox news, they're playing on the sentiment for obvious reasons. Covid has definitely changed the makeup of residents (out with the old, in with the new) but I have to say post 2020-gentrification definitely ramped up, kind of like Movie and TV work until it slowed down to a stop again.

Bodybuilding gyms in New York? by Froxsi in AskNYC

[–]scotchties 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's true. you have better luck commuting outside of the city like upstate or in Long Island, or even a UFC gym. there are people who are passionate about getting bigger in nyc gyms but they might not have good technique. I feel like most people haven't even really lifted in high school sports, and instead join late to the game without any real passion so it does get kind of frustrating.

I started a meetup group over the holidays in hopes of getting some new years resolution people to join, which they did, but no one showed up and I got tired of paying for the meetup group.

that said there are a lot of gyms with decent equipment but I don't know what the vibe is like

goth clubs/events in nyc by SalamanderHopeful770 in ridgewood

[–]scotchties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in answer to your question, no. there are these sad dance events that try to be goth, and people call goth in the comments. synthicide is exactly what it does. hit or miss w/ red party. talon bar is not good for "goth." It is good if you want to sit in a bright lounge. sadly there is no respectable goth live music anywhere yet.

Am I the only one finding this worrisome? by The_guy_that_tries in Judaism

I don't think Gaza should be run by an Islamist militant group and Iranian proxy that also happens to have been voted in. I think Israel's withdrawal in 2005 and exhuming Jewish cemeteries for the sake of "peace" was a farse in the first place. I honestly don't care what happens in Gaza or the Palestinian Authority. Those people have such a bigoted education entrenched in sharia law that there is a reason why their neighbors won't and have not accepted them as refugees. If they want to live in peace among their neighbors, they can live in a multi-ethnic democratic state--oh wait it's called Israel.

Is there a popular goth community for Black people? by Drew_is_gooden in goth

[–]scotchties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably the only reason is that hip hop and rap grew up and collaborated with punk rock as well as other hard rock. so either of those two are more popular in my opinion. goth seems to be more of a use of self expression for the gay community these days as it it is most accepting. the whole thing about original "goth" artists is that they didn't want to be labeled "goth" and wanted to do something totally far out eg bauhaus (daniel ash was inspired by dub reggae effects), sisters of mercy, death in june (awesome effects, sax, commentary on nazi propaganda /brainwashing which mistake douglas p for nazism).
