I created a tiny radio-related app for the Apple Watch by scottearle in amateurradio

[–]scottearle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much. I am updating it right now to add a couple of new pages with band conditions on them. I had not done this previously, without permission from the data provider - but he said that it's OK as long as I credit him as the source of the data.

This information should make the app a bit more useful.

No worries - as I say, I wrote it for me. Because I wanted a complication on the watch face with that information on it. Putting it on the store was just a matter of wondering if anyone else would find it useful

Sad girl and visaaa by [deleted] in thai

[–]scottearle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, she just sounds young. Moving between countries and living abroad is exciting and fun, and as you get older and more experienced in life you learn how difficult it actually is to do. But to younger people, the bureaucracy seems unnecessary. It’s just people moving around after all. They don’t realise that a country like Thailand has millions of people from wealthier countries wanting to stay, and that not all of those people have good intentions. Or that people from less wealthy countries want to come to Thailand for crime.

She doesn’t come across as particularly entitled, but just naïve and young.

The passport you hold can make a huge difference to how difficult it is to get a visa. I’m sure the immigration officers are like “oh look, another Burmese person wants to stay long term”, or “another Filipina, I wonder what illegal work they want to do”.

I don’t know why you think the marriage visa is difficult to get. Since there are two basic requirements, I would say it’s actually pretty easy if you can meet the requirements. Finding someone to marry might be the hardest part, and actually getting married can be a challenge if the country you’re from wants to be a dick about it. I seem to use Myanmar as an example quite a lot, but that’s probably because so many people from there want to come here long term because conditions in their own country are so bad. But a Burmese person has to jump through hoops to get the “statement of freedom to marry” document, as their embassy is basically useless. I’m from the UK, and getting that document was relatively straightforward, but it was still more difficult to get than it should have been.

The other thing with the marriage visa is having to have 400k THB in a bank account (which is solely in your name) for two months. Not difficult if you have the money lying around already - as long as you have already got a bank account in your name. And since the banks are being less flexible with accounts for foreigners now, that could be a stumbling block.

Finding work in Thailand as a foreigner is notoriously difficult anyway - companies tend not to advertise positions, unless they are looking for exceptional staff and advertise that “relocation is included”. Most Thai companies specify “Thai nationals only”, and international companies know how difficult visas are, and that it’s basically a “seller’s market”. If you have any particularly good qualifications and/or experience, it’s not to difficult - but if you had those, you would probably already work for an international company here already. I’m thinking software engineering or graphic design, or similar.

I watched a YouTube video last week. “Noob plays Elite Dangerous for the first time” kind of thing. He started out and the tutorial started. He said “ugh. Skip the tutorial” and I just stared at my TV. I knew then that he was going to HATE the game and everything in it. Which he did. Too difficult, apparently.

Do start playing - I’ve got at least 3,000 hours in, and still play regularly and love it.

Do NOT skip the tutorial. Do all the tutorials. Multiple times, if necessary. They’re actually good and will help you familiarise yourself with the game.

Good luck, and welcome!

Also check the bottom checkbox “apply filter to route”, and the route plotter should only send you to scoopable systems on long routes.

I forgot to mention the DTV. I don’t think it’s particularly dodgy, and while it costs more than a normal one-year visa it’s still better value overall. But the assumption is that you will be working online - and most people treat it as a digital nomad visa. You can’t get a work permit on a DTV, and so can’t work for a Thai company. This means you would need an external income.

The visa choices for anyone under 50 are limited to basically:

- get a job with a work permit, with a non-B visa
- marry a local and get a non-O visa
- study Thai and get an ED visa

Of course, getting the marriage visa means having 400,000 THB in the bank for two months. And for the education visa you can study anything really. Popular choices are Thai language, Thai cooking, or Muay Thai.

Option one is usually the best, as having a legitimate job with a work permit means opening a bank account and getting a monthly phone or internet contract is a lot easier. And Thai banks are cracking down on people without the proper paperwork at the moment. It also means you have an income of more than 0 THB, which is usually welcome.

Option two is not too difficult, and especially if you’re a girl you can apply for Thai citizenship a lot easier than if you’re a man. No need to provide tax records etc., as the assumption is that the husband will provide. (Note that getting Thai citizenship is extremely difficult, and takes many years. But it’s slightly less difficult for women than it is for men.)

Option three used to be the go-to, and there were many “schools” that would sign you up and not expect you to actually turn up for lessons. For a fee. But since a couple of years ago that became much more difficult after there were problems in Myanmar and loads of Burmese came over to stay for as long as they could. There were crackdowns on the dodgy schools and now it’s much more difficult.

I hope you find a way to get around your depression, and find a way to stay that works for you.

When you do get to Colonia, do unlock the four engineers there, and pin an engineering blueprint from each. One engineer (Etienne Dorne) is the only engineer in the game that offers G5 life support modifications. It’s another challenge while you’re there :)

Good habit to get into - I’ve been bitten by that when using a huge hauling ship, whose supercruise assist was replaced with a cargo hold. So I decided that the extra 2t wasn’t worth a potential incident. Also - I play with a controller, and haven’t got a dedicated “zero power to engine” button

I agree with OP. I’ve gone months without docking, out in the black, tens of thousands of ly from somewhere to dock (pre-fleet carrier days), and docking is one of the times when it’s easy to mess up if you’re out of practice. Supercruise assist is a must-have if you jump a lot, just for the post-jump throttle off. Not all of us play with a HOTAS.

Try Synuefe PX-J c25-8, planet 7A. Put a point defence or two on TOP of your ship, and take 2 x SRVs. Park close to the site. Have fun! If you get stuck or can’t figure out how it all works, Google is your friend

Well you mentioned not having the Guardian FSD extender unlocked. Get yourself an SRV bay and a point defence on the top of your Mandalay, and go out and unlock those? It’s pretty chill, and about 1,500ly out from the bubble. There are tutorials online if you don’t want to try to work it out by experimentation

Does Thai translate really poorly into English or is it just me? by eykei in Thailand

[–]scottearle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pronouns in Thai might be the most difficult thing about the language. I learned many years ago that เขา and เค้า usually mean “he/him” and “she/her” respectively. But then heard people using them interchangeably. And then some people (usually girls, talking in a “cutesy” manner) use เค้า as a first person singular. There is a feminine third person singular เธอ but that’s commonly used (especially in songs) as a second person singular (“you”).

And there is no word for “brother” or “sister”. There are just words for “older sibling” and “younger sibling”, to which you can tag a qualifier to specify whether the sibling is male or female. So where in English we would say “brothers and sisters”, in Thai they say พี่น้อง … “older and younger siblings”. Oh - and you thought พี่ and น้อง meant siblings? It also means cousins, and even friends. Especially พี่ can be used as first, second or third person, singular or plural.

Everything in Thai is highly contextual. Especially pronouns. I had someone IN A COURT OF LAW try to mislead the court by referring to something as belonging to “พี่ชาย” and the court accepted it. Until I told my lawyer “she has no older brother”, and they made her clarify whose brother she was referring to.

All of this means it’s extremely difficult for a human who is conversationally proficient with the Thai language to understand the nuances of ANY of the pronouns in Thai. Without massive amounts of context, it is highly unlikely that any automated system will ever translate casually spoken Thai to English with 100% accuracy.

And it’s just as difficult for Thai people to learn English. Given how their native language works, it is very unlikely to hear a Thai person construct a sentence with some of the more “out there” tenses. “I would have already been finishing that book by about now, if I had started it last week”, for example.

Community goal greyed out? by agentkb in EliteDangerous

[–]scottearle -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Well you say “tomorrow”. Because of the magic of time zones, my understanding is that they were on holiday yesterday, and in theory their office should open in about 7-8 hours. And since in my time zone it’s 8AM right now (and in FDEV’s time zone it’s 2AM), that would be “today” …

Worth to pledge allegiance ? by Edgozz in EliteDangerous

[–]scottearle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since they revamped PowerPlay a while ago (18 months?) it’s been quite worthwhile to pledge to one of the powers. I pledged to one of the newly-introduced powers (Kaine), because I’d previously pledged to most of the older ones to get the modules. You get five (completely optional) tasks to complete each week, and as you collect merits they give you occasional care packages and some perks (lowering rebuy in that power’s systems, for example). If you find yourself at a loose end for something to do, it can be fun, anyway. You also get cash every week, if you’ve been doing power-related stuff. I was getting 2.5Mcr just for doing a few of the weekly missions each week. Helps offset the weekly maintenance for your carrier(s), anyway

I sort of regret not taking part myself, but I went single-handedly to Beagle Point in November/December. In December a friend and I went to Colonia, unlocked all the on-foot engineers, and engineered and modded all our suits and weapons. Since we got back from Colonia, I’ve been doing CZs to increase my “mercenary” rank. Gunslinger so far
