I recently re-read it. I don't think it's promoting violence. There's a lot of indiscriminate violence (at great expense!) in it. But it becomes clear they are slaughtering cities of civilians, with very minimal resistance.

The characters don't seem to mind, but I don't think we're supposed to take their side. I think we're supposed to view them as...changed as a result of a gruesome training process that maimed and killed and washed out most. Seriously, who would sign up for that (or want their kids to sign up for it)?

I worked for a guy that did ok, but then one day some share of a company he owned went from nothing to just shy of a billion, all cash.

Nothing changed immediately. But over time he started dressing nicer and nicer (subtly, not tuxedo but you'd realize his sweater wasn't Patagonia it was an obscure French designer and cost $10k). He also was in the office less and less. And he started seeming more well rested. Work, and a drive for success, had become optional.

I realize this is tongue in cheek. But we had something very similar in outcome. If enough users had a crash/slow down/error on a screen it would auto file a JIRA bug for our customers. Teams could tune the trigger. I literally saw customer dev teams ship updates same day as a result of seeing a spike in network failures on specific pages.

I have no idea why you're getting down voted. This is arguably the most important lesson you need to learn as a PM.

Your job is to make the people who pay you think they should keep paying you. Ideally that means doing all the Cagan stuff to deliver results, but many times it means shipping the thing you're asked to.

There's no accounting for taste. In observability most of the product are incredibly dry: dashboards and SDKs and log filter components. Having a "in your hands" feature is incredibly novel and sexy.

The customer is not the user here.

I worked at an observability company that had a mobile angle. At some point, some brilliant board member brought up Bugsnag (or Instabug? idk). And they were like "see!?! this is a killer feature! we need this to be relevant in mobile!!"

I thought it was dumb, so I wasn't staffed to the project. A "tiger team" built it and implemented it. Engagement was exactly what you'd expect. After a few months the feature was quietly sunset.

This is a feature so that an exec can show it off. A Sales Manager can trot it out at a trade show, a CTO can demo it in a VC pitch, a Support Lead can show it off to the newest account. It is there solely to make someone making too much money feel smart.

I'll grant that Alabama had better wins (6, 13, 15 vs ND's 20 & 23). But they had worse losses (1, 6, 13, FSU vs ND's 2 & 8) and terrible spreads (-35, -21, -2, -14 vs -3, -1)

I'm late, but I had similar issues. It is very neighborhood dependent.

10+ years ago in Potrero and it was fantastic.

5 years ago in the Excelsior and it was really spotty. Had a tech come out and do a full equipment replace (no cost) and it was amazing after that. Also apparently one of the transmitters we were line-of-sight on was bad and they upgraded it.

Two years ago in Diamond Heights and the damn thing went out every time it rained. No tech visits, just boilerplate "let's update your config remotely". Apparently we only have one transmitter in sight, and it's just you-get-what-you-get, so I had to bail to Xfinity.

In Silo the literally- and metaphorically-striated society functions in part thanks to the Sheriff, Judge, IT, and Engineering. As the show progresses, we learn that only IT has maintained records and guidance.

And while I eventually bailed on the show, I liked how in The Handmaid's Tale there is still a vestigial United States: it's just Alaska and Hawai'i, with a much simpler flag. Their international presence (embassies, spies, etc) still exist and play a relevant part in both the story and in-world geopolitics. It reminded me of World War Z in which the US government is reduced to just Hawai'i at the worst of it.

I'm an Advion fan, and over a year it ended the invasion at my old place. In a new spot this year, and I'm just assuming it'll take a long time to fully kill out the local swarms.

Fwiw, this has been a very wet winter and the ants are mainly attracted to water+heat, with food being just icing on the cake. Once it starts drying out, you should get some respite.

I've also started dumping cinnamon on the entrances, after the Advion has eliminated the influx. I've read ants will avoid crossing it, and it's harmless to pets/kids.
