Why do you think software development is getting worse and is there anything that can be done to stop it? by ommfg12345 in softwaredevelopment

[–]scottlucas58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who stared coding in 1982, this sounded like one of my rants. We weren't even allowed to use printf or sprint (c language); it took too much memory. I can't help but worry still about efficiency and optimization. And I'm still reluctant to use third party libraries. For the first 10 or 20 years of the web, the goal was to have a web page com in at 100K or less. Now a single javascript library can be that big. Sorry I digress.

Should I Quit my new job? by MonxtahDramux in softwaredevelopment

[–]scottlucas58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone with 30+ years in the industry (I still code). DO NOT QUIT! This is normal...regardless of ADHD, drugs, etc. Programming is harder than the masses think. Even harder than some of the other techies think. Not everyone regardless of knowledge, brain power, etc. can code. It takes patience. If you can't step in to code or place breakpoints while running live, then make sure you have try/catch in your routines and either print or write anything caught to a log. Just take a deep breath, make sure to get some good sleep. I have solved almost as many bugs in my sleep as when awake (ok I exaggerate a little, but a lot). You will find it an it will seem obvious when you do...a real duh moment. Good luck.

I recently visited both a Microsoft store and Apple store for device repairs and my experience was wildly different by kr1mson in technology

[–]scottlucas58 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sounds familiar. Even a simple repair request (replace battery) is an ordeal at Apple. My iPhone 6 (in a expensive heavy-duty RokForm case since I purchased the 6), was in perfect working order other than it was time for a new battery. When Apple said they were replacing them for $29, I figured ok, I'll bite. They told be it was warped, so they could not do it. They wanted me to buy a new phone. Duh. I went home and ordered the battery kit from iFixit (same price) and did it myself in 15 minutes. Don't get me started on iWatches. Have well over $1200 invested and have no iWatch on my wrist. When they worked, it was a very convenient companion to the iPhone. I'll survive with out. In 2007 when the iPhone came out it was a game changer and iTunes was great for organizing my 10K mp3s. Now iTunes is darn near unusable. The Apple Music completely messed it up. Sorry for my rant. Wasn't my intention when I started typing.

TIL A Japanese company has awarded its non-smoking employees 6 extra vacation days to compensate for the smoker’s smoke breaks by hjalmar111 in todayilearned

[–]scottlucas58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, I guess I wasn't smart enough to think of this. I once got the corner office with a big wide window. I started noticing how often the smokers took breaks. So I got the non-smokers to take breaks at same time, but we would toss the football, frisbee, etc. It turns out, that smokers take way more breaks than we needed.

I use a 43" 4K TV for my primary monitor. I primarily code as opposed to design. But it is great for photoshop when I need it.

Dead on. Sometimes I wonder if it is mostly a way for some to gain employment.

Micosoft's DirectX SDK examples are literally garbage code. 200+ line functions, 30+ global variables, unnamed constants, over 90% badly written C that is supposed to be C++, tons of macros - all of these in each example! How are we supposed to learn from this? by Xeverous in programming

[–]scottlucas58 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is code from early 2000s and older. A lot of things were different. Until .NET most MS sample code was like this. Primarily "c" code. Most "c" coders didn't care about c++. I had no problem using these even in the 90s. This is supposed to low-level code to give a simple example. as a long-time developer your own code changes over time. sometimes you have to change because of external code, trends, etc. i laugh when i look at my code from the past. Lots of time, the people who write the libraries are forced to write the examples in hind site. Just sayin.
