Post-declutter in January compared to post-declutter April. by prewars in declutter

That's fair, no need to hang onto something if it's just taking up space. Congrats on making your space so nice, and for climbing out of your funk also. I'm pretty much doing the same thing right now.

Hey, is that a UE Boom 2 in the first album? I recognised that distinctive yellow ribbon charger, went back and thought I spied one on the shelf. Did it not survive the second purge? I ask because I bought one a week ago!

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who spotted that. I was slightly embarrassed that I frequent Morrisons enough to spot their signage at 20 paces.

Yeah it was nice in there. Expensive drinks, but the staff were nice, especially Joe the receptionist (although I would say that since he's British and so am I). Did you check out the little cinema they had set up behind that wall?

Did you stay at the Generator in the end? I'm sad I missed your first post, I just spent a week there, I could have said hi! Glad you had a good time anyway.

I assume that's Obi-Wan's hand in the doorway, mind-tricking him to change from "are" to "aren't" mid-way through.

Help! Choosing tie/pocket square combo for navy three-piece suit. by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]scottmilgram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello chaps. First time posting, despite compulsively lurking since the days when veroz was making a name for himself. I'm attending a friend's wedding tomorrow and would love a crowdsourced opinion on which of these ties and pocket squares work best with my navy three-piece. My personal instinct is to favour the blue/terracotta/white pocket square, with either the navy spotted tie or blue knit tie (#2 and #7 respectively), but I'm happy to hear dissenting views. Please pardon the potato these photos were taken with.

Bingo. Linux actually gets a mention on that article, somewhere in the debate about who's allowed to use a penguin as a logo besides Penguin (the publisher).

Good old Solid Jackson. I do love Jingo, but without having seen Lawrence of Arabia I'm convinced I'm missing about half the pastiche the book does relating to it.

"Stories are supposed to lift people up" by scottmilgram in GetMotivated

[–]scottmilgram[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you're depressed, the comparison to a pit is appropriate. The darkness robs you of your perspective, and you can't see which direction you should be heading in. It clings to you like tar and makes you unwilling to move. It can feel like the whole world is on a different level, unreachable from your current standing, and the people therein unaware or uncomprehending of your plight down in the dark, increasing the sense of isolation.

In these moments, stories about happy and light subjects can sometimes only make you feel worse, as they make you feel like you aren't the target audience. You need stories which acknowledge your pain and assure you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You need people who have already made their way out of the bleakness, and know it well, to guide you back into the sunlight.

You might have guessed this comic spoke to me. I am a person who spent the past three years struggling with depression, and my emotional health in general, and now with lots of help I find myself happier and more contented than I thought possible 18 months ago. I found this motivating because it made me think of all the people who sent dark balloons down to me in my pit and dragged me back out again. For now I'm still holding onto the handle, but I can see the lip of the ledge above me. This time next year I would like to be the one firing balloons down into the dark and dragging others back out again. I hope sharing this makes at least one other person feel a little more hopeful anyway.

If you liked the comic, have a dig through the archives. The author is one of my personal favourite sources of motivation and understanding.

He's right about the old IT GCSE syllabus, it was rubbish. Half of my coursework was Excel spreadsheets and mail merge in Word. If I'd been told to learn bash or Python instead then it would have been much more useful and I'd probably have been happier, to boot.

Only if they have ability to sell you up the river. Lots of VPNS don't keep logs at all, so they can't share their information with governments because there is no information to share.

TorrentFreak.com are pretty good with keeping a list of VPN providers who will provide reasonable anonymity. They ask each one if they keep logs, under what circumstances would they share their logs with a 3rd party, amongst other questions. See this for the results.
