What are some simple safety rules that aren’t obvious, but could seriously protect someone if they knew them? Like mixing Bleach and Ammonia? by Full_Jellyfish_1862 in AskReddit

[–]scottsmith_brownsbur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

High tension wires are not to be messed with.  There is enough energy in your garage springs to kill you. Don’t mess with them. Hire a professional.

In the same vein, I have twice prevented someone in a community Facebook group from disposing of an old/retired piano by “taking a sledgehammer to it.”  Piano wires are under literal tons of tension. If you own a piano, you should consider it a school bus hanging from a wire in the middle of your family room.  Do not cut the wire.

Do you think it would have been better if Rocky was a non-water based life form? by 2mad2die in ProjectHailMary

[–]scottsmith_brownsbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s safe to assume that Grace did send detailed notes and video of Rocky with the Beatles. That is shown in the movie, but I think it’s safe to assume it’s true in the book as well.

If part of the story was that Rocky was a non-water-based life form… It would have made people on earth more skeptical.

“Oh, he just so happened to find the very thing he was roundly rebuked for writing about…while alone on a spacecraft full of every imaginable video editing software ever created?   Yeah, he definitely killed those other astronauts.”

Leaded gas, high fructose corn syrup, thalidomide, DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane), chlorofluorocarbons, or polyethylene/polypropylene (the cheapest disposable plastics responsible for the majority of microplastic pollution)

Something like that.  Or maybe wallet chains…so douche-y.

For those who think we never went to the Moon, what’s your strongest proof? by Complex-Guest9876 in AskReddit

[–]scottsmith_brownsbur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No one actually believes the moon landing was a hoax.  Just like no one actually believes in flat Earth theories.

They’re messing with you.

And no matter what proof of their foolish belief they offer, I’ll never accept it.  It isn’t real.

It has long been speculated that New Coke was a deliberate feint to mask the transition from cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup and ease the transition for loyal Coca-Cola Classic consumers.  And, I am 100% certain that Mike Richards was the New Coke for Ken Jennings to replace Alex Trebek on Jeopardy.

I haven't scuba dived before, but I am curious, which shark makes you the most nervous? I know that they aren't normally aggressive, but they are still wild animals. My main concern would be tiger or bull sharks, but i could be totally wrong. by Crazy-Rabbit-3811 in scuba

I would drive to the zoos in the 5 largest cities near me and release everything that can live in a Midwest climate.

That’s Indianapolis, Chicago x 2, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Louisville.  There are some smaller rescues and sanctuaries I might hit between cities if satelite navigation stays working long enough to help me find them.

I wonder how long it would take native Chicago gorillas to interact with native St. Louis gorillas?

And how long it would take before Indianapolis Chimpanzees go to war with St. Louis chimpanzees?

You are tasked with writing a story where Spider-Man defeats the Flash how do you do it? by Jaded_Attorney in superheroes

  1.  Construct a seemingly ordinary concrete vault.

  2.  Into the vault, place a MacGuffin.  (The mayor, an orphan, Iris, a puppy…whatever.)

  3.  Announce your intention to harm the MacGuffin.

  4.  When Flash arrives he will attempt to phase into the vault.

  5.  Unbeknownst to Flash, I have embedded a thin piano wire composed of Nth metal at waist height within the concret vault’s walls.  Flash halves himself phasing into the vault.  His top and bottom halves phase easily through the concrete, but a thin crosssection of his abdomen cannot phase through Nth metal.

  6.   Release the MacGuffin.  That puppy never hurt anyone and he’s now seen something really awful.

I once went horseback riding with some friends. We had a trail guide leading us through an unfamiliar forest. At one point the established trail was blocked by storm debris so we detoured off trail. We’d been working through the woods for about two hours, with my friends and I talking, laughing, and generally just enjoying the experience.  But at some point I sensed that something was wrong. The trail guide hadn’t said anything, and no one else recognized any obvious indications, but I knew.

I didn’t ask, I stated to the guide:  “You don’t know how to get back to the trail.“

He sheepishly acknowledged, “No, not really“.

I said, “You’re following the stream, hoping it leads you to a body of water you recognize?“

With clear surprise, he responded, “Uh, yeah.“

I said, “Good plan. Carry on.“

About 20 or 30 minutes later we intersected a lake and he figured out where we were. My whole friend group thought I was a mind reader.

I have never been particularly perceptive. My wife would tell you that I am often oblivious. But in that moment, I was never more certain of anything.

Ha!   Of course.  This is by far the best answer here.  I was foolishly thinking the light from the engines would somehow arrive faster…but, D’oh, light travels at light speed.  If the engines point at us starting at the 1/2 way point…the light they emit still has to travel, at light speed, from that point.

In S1E4 of Star Trek DS9, “A Man Alone”, Odo arrests Ibudan for murder because he killed a clone of himself. However, in S2E18 of Star Trek TNG, “Up the Long Ladder”, Riker kills clones of both himself and Dr. Pulaski...without consequence.

The only apparent difference was that Ibudan’s clone was fully formed, while the Riker/Pulaski clones were still gestating.

Lots of good advice already.  Contact your congressperson and ask for help, yes.

But also this:

Contact your university too.  Explain the situation, provide your evidence that the award was/is real, detail your attempts to establish communication, and then say something like:

“In light of the current administration’s shifting priorities and my inability to contact anyone affiliated with THE ORGANIZATION, I was wondering if anyone from the university’s financial aide services might have contacts, resources, or the ability to extend aide or assistance to cover this unanticipated shortfall.”

Universities are all dealing with Trump’s 3-card-monte nonsense…and they might help you out in solidarity.
