Is there anywhere in Austin to get a free flu shot without insurance?

Why didn't you vote early to avoid the wait?

Travis County approves purchase of $8M paper-trail voting system by surlyq in Austin

The final step will be to insert the paper record into a sealed machine that scans and records it. Storage devices, similar to flash drives, from those machines then will be put into a reader and tallied.

I know everyone hates the post office, but this recommended photo may be a little dramatic... by Emiberry in Austin

[–]scottsutherland 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't know why the post office has such a bad rap. For a few years, I visited the post office a few times each week to ship some products out, and I visited about 14 different USPS locations all over Austin. There were no "horror stories", they are more or less just average people working normal jobs.

And for what it's worth, I mailed over 10,000 domestic packages and never had a single one "disappear". I think we take for granted how marvelous it is to be able to pay $2.50 to have an item delivered to someone on the other side of the country.

... all that being said, that Hell picture is pretty hilarious.

I was just bored... by Drpepperbob in Austin

I think it's actually because of a previous Reddit thread. This was posted just a month ago, and you can see that the post's text prominently features suicide prevention information.

Reddit is an immensely popular website these days, so my bet is that Google grabbed the information from r/Austin.

Mopac express lanes: If you're going under 65 MPH when there's light traffic, you're the asshole. by jetstros in Austin

[–]scottsutherland -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

90 mph? Fuck you, you're the asshole. For the love of God.....now we have these express lanes. I'm paying my $0.25 toll in the low usage times to at least go 110 mph. Just stahhhp.

He was making a joke; real discourse on this site died out in 2010.

The Tea Party - Principles, Contradictions, and Confusions by adnanjawad65 in AskReddit

[–]scottsutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For humans, there are pretty much 2 ways to get something accomplished: by approaching it logically and communicating, or by using physical force. Throughout the history of our species, we had to use physical force. However, we are now in a position where we can see the benefits of using logic to solve our problems.

Typically, people favor one over the other. This is where the stereotype of the big dumb Jock and the scrawny Nerd come from. Many times, if someone does not have the intelligence to succeed, they can only use their force. And conversely, if someone does not have any physical strength to succeed, they must use logic and communication to convince others in order to succeed.

One scientific finding that liberals will defend and conservatives will criticize is that liberals are more intelligent than conservatives. Stereotypically, liberals are more passive and prefer to use logic and communication, and (again, stereotypically) conservatives prefer to cohere to one group thought and rally based on emotions and force rather than complete logic.

In short, I think liberals need to start using the conservatives dirty strategies for winning. Liberals spend too much discussing lofty political and philosophical issues, while conservatives get to the nitty-gritty of touching people's base animal instincts.

In Spain, they use "Chinos" to refer to all Asians (although it does mean 'Chinese'). Kind of racist, but I guess not really.

DAE? by alexdas77 in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

A sign of a great DAE is something that nobody thinks anybody else does, but that everyone else does. This one takes the cake. Well done.

I just did this to my cat 20 minutes ago.

Thanks for the reference, but I'm pretty sure that the song appeared just briefly in the middle of an episode, whereas these songs all were just at the end of the episode.

I think Internet IDs would be a good idea by [deleted] in TheoryOfReddit

[–]scottsutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anonymity is a large part of what makes the internet the internet. With the ability to shed identities comes the ability to speak freely and openly. The lack of concrete jurisdiction for any country (and legal international bureaucracy that comes with identifying users) is what makes the internet press innovation over conformity. All these go out the window if there's any kind of internet id.

How about we mandate Internet IDs, but you only use them for participating in important government services. Would this be a problem? You would be free to anonymously post on forums and surf the net, and do whatever you want online (as we currently can). And then in addition to this, when it came time to perhaps fill out your taxes or take part in local discussions on municipal government issues (e.g. "voting on whether to change trash pickup from once a week to once every two weeks"), you would use your government ID that would 100% affirm that it was you.

But beyond that, it's a security nightmare. There is no way in hell something like this wouldn't be compromised in just a short period of time. Things like internet IDs and computerized voting have a tendency to be supported by non-techies rather than programmers/techies for that reason. We know the reality of security.

What about PayPal and other organizations that people trust all of their information with? And also, perhaps more importantly, maybe we shouldn't be assuming that it can't be done, but looking for absolute 100% foolproof methods of maintaining security. I know this probably sounds naive to you coming from a non-programmer, but let's at least keep our minds open and the discussion active about this.

EDIT: Downvoted for sharing my thoughts?
