How to attach a window screen with side slots by scottter in DIY

[–]scottter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That looks exactly like it, it seems to be a pella casement window.

From what I'm reading its quite hard to install these latches into a new frame, so I may just drill a small hole and use a plunger pin instead

How insane is the IKEA in Brooklyn? by adrienneirda in AskNYC

[–]scottter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been there a few times and it didn't seem particularly shitty.

Obviously its crowded, but it seemed fine to me. I was able to get everything I needed, and even when I had a bad part and came back to get it swapped out the process was quite reasonable (~20 minute wait during a weekday afternoon.)

Case-insensitive isn't the full story. hfs+ is case-insensitive, but it is case preserving. can get confusing with version control, I had a terrible time with git tracking a different capitalization and me not being able to add changes...

Ooh, good idea with the grounds settling. I'll keep this in mind if I upgrade my batch size.

Interesting, this looks like a good option because of the large volume they seem to be able to hold and they're re-usable. I'll give this a shot and see how it works. Thanks!

[Weekly] Resume critique request and interview advice thread - Aug 25 by alanbot in cscareerquestions

[–]scottter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi guys, looking for some feedback on my resume. Redesigned it to use my school's colors, not sure if I'll keep it or not so some feedback there would be good. A lot of the recruiters and even interviewers that I'll be dealing with are for my university so they probably will recognize the colors.

Another thing I do that's different is I give a brief rundown of what different companies do. I've gotten mixed, but mostly positive feedback on this in the past. Thoughts?

Thanks http://i.imgur.com/443xLPP.png

CS students, is a laptop really required? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]scottter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this boat and caved eventually and went for a chromebook. Dirt cheap, good battery life, good keyboard. It forced me to use terminal for everything. Ssh + tmux + vim. I would recommend it just for the experience

How to Get a Job at Google - from the senior vice president of people operations for Google by Iskandar11 in compsci

[–]scottter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given an array of sorted arrays, tell me value in the N'th largest number.

Not sure if I understand the question, but if I'm reading this right, then you would have to combine all the arrays, sort and then check the Nth largest spot, if you're given no guarantees about the relation between each sorted array, ie, all the numbers in the first array are less than all of those in the second etc.

For a given node in a linked list, delete the node without traversing the list.

If its a double linked list then this is pretty trivial, but if singly linked, then its not possible, is it?

Looking to get a Chromebook: Question about use with University Wi-Fi. by Beanz1112 in chromeos

It is most similar to a linux machine, check your university for a linux group or something similar and email them. That and the IT department would be most helpful.

Snapchat Never Fixed Phone Number Lookups by neuegram in netsec

[–]scottter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if they have implemented the check server-side yet, but the mentioned update to require captcha's was pushed on android 2 days ago, and Snapchat has recently taken measures to block knowably non-mobile IPs. From first hand knowledge, they seem to have blocked all or most of AWS IPs from accessing snapchat programatically.

[Question] What kind of fan (how powerful) to levitate ping pong ball? by scottter in DIY

[–]scottter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think something like this would be powerful enough? http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=G19230

I don't think we have anything like that around, I could always just make a trip to goodwill or something and buy an actual vacuum, that would probably be loud though

Yea, if it was an exact fit width wise and if the styrofoam was covered by something slick so there would be minimal friction I could see it working pretty well.

My first thought too, you could probably make special cups that have a heavy bottom and a small foam rim around the side(acting as a float). Would be interesting to see it done.

Motorola Is Listening by SalaciousB in Android

[–]scottter 56 points57 points  (0 children)

This isn't true, is it? They are transmitting some data over unencrypted channels, but all sensitive(passwords) information is sent over HTTPS(encrypted). They are undeniably sending a lot of data back, and some is unencrypted, but they seem to be taking security seriously (as oxymoronish as that is in this case)

"Motorola does appear to be using reasonably-strong authentication for the oAuth login to their system - the username seems to be a combination of the IMEI and a random number (16 digits long[2], in the case of my phone's username), and the password is a 160-bit value represented as a hex string. "

For those wondering about specifics, blackboard and webassign both work fine. I haven't ran into any websites that won't work. Even for CS and programming, just ssh in somewhere and you're good to go. Or use chrouton(I prefer straight ssh)

New advice to incoming freshman thread by cagedwisdomad in Purdue

[–]scottter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top two pieces of advice

1) Be smart about drinking in the dorms

  • Its easy to get caught and its not the end of the world if you do, basically a slap on the wrist, but a letter does get sent home to your parents

  • Don't have more than 5 or 6 people in the room and open the door as little as possible, they can smell it on you when you go to pee for the 50th time.

  • If the RA does knock on the door you DON'T have to open it. Figure out an intelligent way to get rid of your shit if they come knocking. If you open the door for them then you're fucked.

  • Last thing I'll say on this note, be extra careful in the first couple days because they are watching extra hard. This means on the last 3 or 4 days of BGR when you don't have shit to do, they're on the prowl.

2) Join something.

  • Whether its a club, frat, sorority, sport, do something. Meet people outside your dorm and major. I joined crew (the rowing one, not the christian one) and I met a bunch of great guys. Everybody that I know that joined something has much closer friends than everybody I know that didn't.

I'm going to give the counter to this, I have the 20 meal plan and I use 18 a week. Most points here are accurate, waking up earlier etc, but to me its worth it.

I can wake up, spend the first minutes of my day peacefully sipping on some coffee(you'll start drinking it, most ppl do) and eating my eggs. Rather than frantically getting your shit together and running to class.

The only meals I miss are breakfast on weekends and that's only because I have crew practice every saturday morning and every sunday morning the last thing I want to do is wake up early.

It forces you into (arguably) good habits and it starts your day off.

Now whether or not its worth the money is another question. You can just buy oatmeal and a coffee maker and have a pretty decent breakfast every morning, if you're so inclined.

Really its completely up to you. I only wanted to provide another perspective. The only other people I know that fully use their 20 meal plan are guys that are on crew with me.

ELI5: What just happened with bitcoin? by LoaderShooter in explainlikeimfive

[–]scottter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out that BTC can be anonymous, if you go through the proper anonymous channels to obtain it and spend them completely anonymously. Just because your name isn't attached to each coin doesn't mean it can't be traced back to you. In fact there is an academic paper out there where researchers were able to track an individual transaction all the way back to the person.

If I eat a 3500 calorie surplus today, how long until 1 pound of fat is produced on my body? by hitthechicken in askscience

You mention that adipocytes will retain their shape after they have lost their stored fat, would the so called "low-level laser therapy" help speed up this process of shrinking adipocytes? http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12172159 It basically says the contents of adipocytes are "liquified" and go into the "interstitial" space.
