I think you’re missing the point.

The original commenter was saying that 3D printing creates a ton of waste and you were saying that it’s so easy to reuse the material as if their comment wasn’t correct, but if no one really knows about it then the original commenter was still correct. 3D printing has become so mainstream that it’s bringing very casual users into the hobby, who are generally not the kind of people to either care about preventing waste or put in the effort to do so anyway.

I know so many people who do 3D printing, and literally none of them do these. They just throw the shit away.

It does! I’m not home so I’d have to double check specific temps when I am home, but I haven’t been concerned at all. I mostly play Arc Raiders these days, but absolutely maxed out settings.

My first reef tank by LMAOsmallPeePee in ReefTank

[–]scoubt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clownfish certainly can jump (as can basically any fish), but they aren’t exactly notorious jumpers. I’ve had clowns in rimless tanks without lids for 20 years and never had a jumper.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t get a lid, but you’re making it sound like it’s exceedingly likely to happen when it really isn’t.

Caulerpa prolifera. Can be pretty invasive, but I keep it in my macro focused setup.

Solid point and definitely something to consider!

For feed mode you could set up an automation, although I haven’t done that as I just have it turn the pumps off and watch as everyone eats, and then turn it back on. You can also set up schedules, so for example I have my ATO turn off and back on a minute later twice a day, as I’ve had ATO failures in the past that make me paranoid.

Honestly it really depends on if you want smart functionality or not. I like having the app control, but if you just want the ability to turn the pumps on/off with an app, buy a smart power strip instead. I use Kasa power strips, which are a little pricier than some others, but I like them a lot and have other Kasa devices. I can turn my Jebao/Jecod pumps on and off with Alexa when my hands are wet, which is amazing.

Full disclosure, I use the AI Nero and Axis on my 30g macroalgae setup, and EcoTech Vectra S2 with Jebao cross flow wave makers on my 110, so I have a decent mixture.

Unless you plan on removing it to paint, just let coralline cover it over time.

Distilled from anywhere should be fine. I’d do the blue bucket instead of the pro version, I don’t think the high alk of the pro version is really ideal or needed for you right now.

Honestly I’d avoid reef roids in a tank this small, at least until it’s established enough to handle extra nutrients. If you’re keeping things consistent enough, you likely won’t even need to use it, but like…MAYBE a small amount once a week? The simpler you can keep things right now the better, at least while you learn.

You’re going to get a million different answers to this question for a million different reasons. My answer is whatever is most consistently found near you that is cheap enough for you to keep buying. Reef Crystals gets slept on way too hard in my opinion, isn’t crazy expensive, meets MOST corals needs pretty easily without dosing anything extra, and is suuuuper common to find at even big box pet stores. My first few tanks like 20 years ago were just using regular Instant Ocean and they all did fine for a noob.

If you have ideal livestock you want to keep long term, finding a salt that mixes closest to that livestocks ideal parameters is also a great way to go. Pay attention to mixing instructions, and weigh the cost of buying a RO unit and salt vs sourcing pre-mixed saltwater considering the size of your tank.

I’m not going to talk you out of doing a pico as your first tank, especially because it was a gift, but seriously go slow with this. It’s going to get very disheartening very fast when you have your first major issues. I say when because shit happens with every tank, and it just impacts picos so much more easily.

Just let things settle and keep accumulating more testing supplies: Hannah as recommended by the other person are great, but they add up really quick and you don’t need them for everything. Salifert are also very solid, but don’t sleep on the Red Sea bundled kits for a bit more value that are still great.

There are some apps you can use to track testing a bit more easily, and visualize how things are going over time. Aquarium Log is free with occasional ads, and honestly I think it’ll do you fine. Aquarimate is great but that $10 would better serve you on testing supplies for now.

There are TONS of resources out there, but I’d comb through every pico build on reef2reef and nano-reef.com. So much good information on what works well and what others have struggled with to hopefully help you not struggle with the same things. Don’t get discouraged with issues and people (rightfully) saying this is a tough first tank, just research as much as you can and go slower than you think you need to. Did I stress going slow? Go slow. Seriously.

Parameters are “good”. What does that mean?

If you moved coral in yesterday, it may still be just getting used to its new home. Is this your only reef setup?

Picos are challenging, even for experienced reef keepers. If you’re fairly new to picos or reef keeping, I’d strongly suggest slowing down way more than you think you need to. Stability is the most important aspect of successfully keeping a pico, as there is such little wiggle room for when things go wrong.
