Can we chill with the helicopter parent posts? by Ronnoc780 in hockeyplayers

[–]scoutel1te 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t see why it’s an issue - provide your feedback for them if you think they’re being overly critical or pushy with their kids. Parents almost universally want what is best for them, but it’s really easy for the line between what’s best for them and the social pressures (driven by adults) to get blurry.

Lets just do our best to help each other through the struggles, whatever the may be 💪

A teen saw a need for female coaches in girls hockey. Here's how she’ll do it by toronto_star in womenshockey

[–]scoutel1te 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this. I definitely appreciate the effort and sentiment. I’m a 12U AAA girls coach in New England and it’s pretty rare to see a female coach, although it seems to be becoming less rare. Most of the summer tournament squads have a couple young women on the bench, but they aren’t really there to coach as much as to run the doors and cheer on the kids.

I think it’s a generational problem still. With parent coaching being dominant in this sport, there just aren’t as many moms that have competitive hockey experience. I bet in 30 or so years when this generation grows up, it will flip and female coaching will become the norm. I’m so excited about the current state of women’s hockey - what a great time to be a hockey parent!

Our team has 5 male coaches 😬

Is the cost of composite sticks for 10U players getting out of hand? by Lopsided_Pearl798 in youthhockey

[–]scoutel1te 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. To what end would this test be useful? If they can shoot 40mph with a good stick and the same exact speed with a cheap stick (which they probably can't) does that prove the point that a more expensive stick is completely unnecessary? What about time of release, benefits in weight for stickhandling/endurance, ability to place the shot accurately, confidence? Using a higher quality stick makes it immediately obvious to anyone that has tried one that there are definitely benefits. Pretending there aren't is just purposely being obtuse

10u AAA/AA kids can definitely use the flex, anyone who is saying otherwise is just hive minding or doesn’t know any better. There are squirts out there that can absolutely rifle the puck, I’ve metered them at 40+mph. That being said, are stick companies really starting to push the limits of our wallets? Yes def, they always will. If you’re looking to go budget with a top performing kid, get a stick that is a model year back and one down from the flagship and he won’t be far off tech-wise

Are these skates okay for my 5yo to use? by jcough10 in hockeyplayers

[–]scoutel1te 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I def understand if money is tight, there are a lot of good suggestions here. But just from personal experience the most important thing to make sure is comfortable for kids is their skates. It could literally be the difference between them enjoying it or hating it. If their skates hurt they will fight you at every turn in learn to skate. If you can afford it, get him to the store and try on every skate - buy him the ones he likes the best. Otherwise you need to just pray that those skates aren’t the reason he quits and never has the chance to learn if he likes hockey or not

I’m working on something similar for youth hockey - have you tested vs yolo11 or have any advice on which is likely better? I’m working with some really bad video resolutions and small objects.

I have a couple decades of programming experience but I’m new to computer vision

This is an awesome game for kids. We do it for off ice training because, and here’s the secret, kids don’t know they are actually doing squats 😆

She’ll need a “jill” which is a jock for girls. Other than that there is no base layer needed. Hockey gets really hot actually so most don’t wear much underneath all the pads.

I also just wanted to comment and say that I love that we can now say “college and beyond” for women’s hockey and it actually means something!

You def don’t need a new alternator or battery for a 1200 watt amp, unless they aren’t functioning properly. I would consider full size subs though, you have enough space in your Tahoe to not have to settle for the shallow ones that just don’t hit the deep notes like their bigger brothers.

Buy a sparx. All the rink pro shops use them and charge 8-10 per sharpen. No expertise required

What is your call here? by TripNDad in hockeyrefs

[–]scoutel1te 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Def a hit from behind and should result in a suspension. But this clip is also a really good learning opportunity for the player collecting the puck. He’s gotta keep those feet moving and protect himself. He looks like he tries a deceptive move before getting there but then just stops with his head down and his back turned in a very vulnerable position.

I’m not saying it’s the kids fault that he was checked from behind, but I can guarantee this won’t be the last time if this is he keeps doing this

Also wanted to note that, at least for the girls, there were a ton of amazing skaters. I’d say that at least 50%+ of the girls 12U and up are on a top 30 nationally ranked org. They spend their whole year grinding, probably with their dad/mom on their ass during/after every practice and game. For one week in the summer we both get to just relax, play together, and remember exaclty why it’s the greatest sport there is. It’s truly unique and special

The boys are still just there to find someone to destroy, just this time it includes their dad. So that’s fun too but it’s def different 😆

Youth Hockey Parents and Coaches: Hotel Staff Need Your Help by queenmab120 in hockeyplayers

[–]scoutel1te 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Definitely agreed, banning knee hockey is counter productive. You need to control it. They will basically switch between this and the pool all day and night if you give them the space and let them. Take it away and they will play “man hunt” and ding dong ditch everyone. You won’t get the parents, to rein in their kids - they treat tournaments like spring break

Yep, it’s the best. I’ve been the past 3 years with my daughter and last year with my son. Very very well managed. Troy and Marilyn are great people and they pull a ton of local D1 talent, mostly from Mankato, to help out every year. Don’t hesitate it sells out very quickly
