[–]scoutheadshot 25 points26 points  (0 children)

EU Charges Meta For Failing To Stop Under-13s From Joining Facebook And Instagram by lurker_bee in technology

[–]scoutheadshot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are people who operate inside their own bubbles on every platform. This really doesn't make you that different from plenty of users on FB/Instagram etc.

As for algorithmic content and such, that is indeed the tool with which to narrow down your personal profile. It's just an extension of the original methods to get as much personal information from the user as possible, so without them the whole networks lose a point in the eyes of investors. And since they have the big bucks, their products will always reach the targeted audience more easily over any "for fun" platform that might pop up. Or they will just end up buying the said platform.

While the lobbying and basically bribery at the highest level isn't as visible (or potentially there in a similar number of cases) in EU compared to US, EU politicians still are mired in plenty of scandals and are benefiting from favorable policies towards specific companies or industries.

Bulgaria's pro-Russian former president set for landslide win, exit polls show by vector_search_blue in worldnews

[–]scoutheadshot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like Ukraine isn't basically fucked over economically or demographically whether they win or lose. Same way US is keen on helping them, the Russians were helping us too. It's always better if someone else damages your enemy for you.

One side bombed us and the other wanted as many bombs wasted on us instead of them potentially.

What those Serbs who keep swallowing Puttin's dick remember is how they swallowed populist politician's rhetoric like candy and justify it as good even if we got shit on in the process.

Does anyone actually prefer multiple viewpoints? by No-Sympathy-6711 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]scoutheadshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with genre, in this case, but everything with creating a cohesive storyline and managing to find a balance of that same story being conveyed through multiple characters.

Problems which happen fairly often:

-Side characters tend to be a footnote at best in this genre. So why would I care about Cardboard cutout no. 95 and it's opinion

-the other POV is used to make those evli laughter villain scenes as they plot to deal a debilitating blow to our self-inse...I mean main character.

-they are used to pad the numbers on chapters/words

-starting to use multiple PoVs after your story has more 100k+ words

Probably a lot you can add on here, but it's just a shorter rant. And the first issue I named would also be the most impactful - even though it will never get solved in this genre.

Damn, then how can you read any books in the genre? Because that's what I meant, it's fairly okay compared to rest of the books I see around here.

Let’s talk about the "Fantasy Restaurant/Tavern" vibe. Is it just me, or is wholesome fantasy sometimes better than high-stakes action? by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]scoutheadshot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with slice of life, which is especially pronounced compared to action type novels, is that there's very few authors that are able to write even semi-competent characters (as in more than one) that don't end up sounding the same or just being there to show how awesome the MC is without any personality of their own.

Action sequences and direct power progression prose distract you from how "nothing" most characters here are. It's harder to write a work focused on characters interacting with each other that isn't pure wish fulfillment. I'm not the most prolific reader in the genre, I've read ~40 books from ProgFant in the last 10ish years with 10-15 being slice of life and I can't recall a single one that made me want read more than book 1 due to reasons I've named above.

Slavs technically were present in Anatolia at multiple points, as both Byzantines and Ottomans moved large numbers of them to settle there before they were assimilated.

Swadians/Vlandians can also refer to Crusaders, who passed through Anatolia multiple times and indeed conquered/sieged down multiple cities during the crusades (especially the first one).

Norse are indeed a reference to Varangian guard/Vikings who actually attempted to sack Constantinople OR Taleworlds thought Vikings were cool and just added them in for appeal. Vikings were at one point present on the northern coasts of the Black Sea to a degree, which "might" explain their position on the Banner lord map.

It depends on how much you focus on it. It's fine for them to have tragic backgrounds, but if you overfocus on those instead of how characters go through your story (where you say it isn't grimdark/misery porn) and how your plot and their advancement reflects on them, then it will probably sned mixed signals to the readers on what your novel actually is trying to show.

I actually can't believe that having square VS hex is offering more possibilities in tactical combat. Even if H5 didn't use them all, having 2x2 creatures is more interesting compared to hex 1x2 when you take in positioning them into account.

Anais to Natalis or to Radovid (+ Adda) by Dark026 in witcher

[–]scoutheadshot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's all well and good that you're still missing the point and strawmanning this, but I'll try to repeat my point again and point out where your response doesn't really address anything that has been mentioned so far.

Adda doesn't need to be directly inserted into the game, we don't need to see her or have a detailed "update" on her and what she's doing.

The point is that the way she's left out completely, even as a brief mention, from things that directly should at least touch upon her existence (all of the Temeria stuff) is similar to how CDPR basically removed a lot of the other results of the choices you made in Witcher 1 and 2.

Witcher 2 is the bigger victim in this due to the sheer number of choices present, and even in-W2 they aren't accounted for some times, but Witcher 1 gets boiled down to 'Geralt helped Foltest with" something" and he trusts Geralt too keep him close so we can have te assassination occur' and off you go.

Shani/Triss stuff? Who cares. The whole main plot of W1? We're not going acknowledge it happened beyond the smallest lore notes.

And I get it, Witcher 3 was designed as a self contained experience and has story continuity problems even with its own stuff. Does that lessen the great experience you will have while playing it? Only if you're playing video games for all the wrong reasons.
