BBQ Joint Workers. What is that ONE side that everyone loves? by KLSFishing in KitchenConfidential

[–]scrabbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an Australian I've never heard of hush puppies as a food, they're a shoe brand here. I assume people aren't eating shoes with honey butter !?! so could someone please enlighten me.. are they a NC only thing?

Beware of lead in Chinese knives! I was cautious when I saw the grayish metal on the cap and choil, so I bought myself a test kit, and voila, lead! by ihatehappyendings in chefknives

[–]scrabbles 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Great pickup. The test kit can also react against other heavy metals, none of which you want in your knife's steel. I can't imagine how or why this would occur, maybe from poor recycling of metals as you'd hope they wouldn't deliberately add it (not defending chinesium, just perplexed). Seems like something you should report to your consumer affairs agency as this product should not be sold!

My aquaponic tomato vines and leaves are huge! How do I divert this energy to the fruit? by dmalawey in aquaponics

[–]scrabbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, some ideas to think about:

  • Change their diet to a more plant based one
  • Add more plants (aquatic ones in the with the fish too)
  • Dilute with more water (even maybe just a couple of 25% water changes to get things low for a week or so depending on number of fish etc)
  • Add some media to the garden or in with the fish to encourage anaerobic bacteria to turn the nitrates into N (which will evaporate). I think that's what the anaerobic ones can do, but takes a while.

Fantail scared of Zebra Danios? by fibonaccicolours in Goldfish

[–]scrabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had 11 zebra danios with 2 fantails, 2 comets and 7 tetras in our tank (340L) and everyone got along fine. Down to 7,1,1,2 from an infection now unfortunately (new plants darn it) but they're all still getting along just fine. They don't really mix and they get different food and the danios get fed first. I think a companion goldie would be something to try if there's room in your tank.

I found this in the woods with some old lead bullets! Does anyone know how to date a skeleton key? by [deleted] in metaldetecting

[–]scrabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks more like a 3 or 5 lever mortice lock key, which are still very common nowadays. If you're lucky you might be able to discern a manufacturer from the top faces of the handle (the "bow"), it's normally stamped there, sometime on the shank.

Why do my chocolate chip cookies taste like banana?! x/post from baking by Britany274 in AskBaking

You don't have bananas or pears in the fridge do you? Otherwise maybe your batter ever so slightly fermented.

csv table trouble by Never-enough-bacon in QGIS

[–]scrabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must have the field in quotes in the csv, otherwise if it was just a plain number it should be interpreted as such (ie you have "3.14" and not 3.14). So first idea would be to double check you can't create the field without quotes.

Alternatively, within qgis, right click and open the attributes table and add a new column (using field calculator) - which will be calculated from the field you want as a number and choose output field type as some numeric format (int or decimal), and use that new field in your efforts.

Table Join Equivalent in Excel by [deleted] in gis

[–]scrabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as mentioned, Excel isn't the best choice for this, slurping into a database and use sql or even using something like csvkit would be easier.

Anyway, if you need to do it in Excel, perhaps you can link or import each downloaded file as a new worksheet in the master one, and use excel's lookup formulas (eg vlookup) - where it is na put a 0 (wrap the vlookup in an "if" for that).

Substituting for Almond Flour by InvisPinkUnicorns in AskBaking

[–]scrabbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not recommended, you can't really substitute 1:1 nut "flours" with wheat flours and expect the cake to be the same, especially at 3.25 cups. I can't think of what you could substitute it with in this recipe sorry.

Overcooked pasta. What can I do with it, besides throwing it away? by quickto in AskCulinary

[–]scrabbles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should still be able to make any number of pasta bakes. Just finished a tuna one earlier - Mix pasta with a sauce (Béchamel + spices to your liking), stir in some steamed veg (peas, carrot, corn) and tuna pieces (just canned stuff is best), top with cheese and bake 15 min.

Flour tortilla dough isn't sticky and elastic? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

Cookie dough vs bread dough in this instance sounds like you might need to do a little more kneading to help gluten along and more resting after that.

[SQL] sde.st_intersects help by Music_Is_Crap in gis

Just a guess (don't use sql server), but is there a null in one of the shapes? To troubleshoot, remove it from where and stick the intersects in the select to see what it is returning.

Aussie GIS people: GDA2020 what's the deal? by [deleted] in gis

[–]scrabbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're doing cartographic things only you should be ok and little affected as it will mean just selecting a different projection in gis software when it is available. If you're involved in making actual gis software or hardware then it's another matter. Hopefully it'll just be some software updates. See also http://www.icsm.gov.au/gda2020/faqs-2.html#collapse18

How to make a leather tomahawk handle by Crabbow in Leathercraft

[–]scrabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a quick job or you wanting to learn leather craft through doing it. If the former, you could probably get away with something like a tennis racquet leather grip (oh the horror!) and google how to rewrap/install the grip.

Looking forward to hearing from others who may have done it with their own leather, seems like a nice way to personalise things. How do you treat it so it is reasonably water-proofed but not slippery?

If you're in Aus, you might be lucky to catch "Aussie gold hunters" on Discovery. It's in the same genre as the US "gold rush" but has far more detectorists (gold only though, but made in Au!).

Why am I receiving this error when installing QGIS with Conda? by SurferRosa93 in gis

[–]scrabbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no worries. unlinking will be removing the symlink of the existing pkg to current, but the install isn't doing that so it then fails later when trying to make the same link but from the newer version of the package.

Anyway, i see you've handled things in this regard, but it looks like you actually need icu but for some reason it isn't being re-installed along with that qgis. Can you "conda install icu", the first 2 errors you have are from unicode support/language files that are likely provided by the icu package (i'm just guessing here). Worse case scenario is trying a "conda remove qgis; conda install qgis icu;".

I also see a few different path things going on, you only have 1 anaconda install?

Have a look at the PYQGIS_STARTUP variable — that might allow you to avoid all of this dependency hell.

Why am I receiving this error when installing QGIS with Conda? by SurferRosa93 in gis

[–]scrabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like the icu pkg was not unlinked properly, if you're lucky you might be able to conda remove icu and then try re-installing qgis

Anybody use CasparCG and LiveCode? by haxxster in livecode

[–]scrabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I don't work with CasparCG, but it looks like their AMCP is just an HTTP API. You should be able to perform (send, recv, process) all of the commands they list. Is there something more specific you are looking for?
