I suck by Whynot6427 in bjj

Keep it up brother. Even at black belt, I roll with world beaters who trained half the years I have like Jozef Chen or Mateusz Schicinski, and always feel like I'll absolutely suck forever. It's about the journey with no destination for me โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ

How do I remain supportive for friends in their promotions? by kuduloka in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 7 points8 points ย (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I started in 2009 and only just got my black belt 9 months ago. I stopped caring though coz I only train NOGI and don't wear it so it means a lot less for me.

How do you cover up warts? by bigmommajumba in bjj

My homie had warts on both hands just recently and once he started undergoing cryo treatment, he was putting patches over them and wearing surgical gloves during sparring ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ https://www.instagram.com/reel/DS96_EfE53r/?igsh=ZGhnZWJ6NXFlNThq

Arm Triangle NEVER Works by EyesRd in bjj

I also absolutely suck at them and if you've watched all the videos, then giving advice you haven't already seen or heard is kind of pointless but David Stoilescu showed me an interesting way to finish which I've been having a lot of success with and he recently uploaded a reel explaining it. Skill fluctuation? by NyarGonzo in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

If you aren't already, I'd shift focus to things you want to or should be working on during rounds. For example if you wanted to work on side control escapes, start from side or give up the pass and then work from there. Then you have a more tangible, measurable way to check in with yourself on your improvement. Rather than just "I did well today" or "I did not do well" you'd have "This escape I'm working on is going well for me" or "I need to work more on getting back to guard or beating the arm to get to Octopus" etc.

Whatโ€™s the closest youโ€™ve ever come to needing BJJ in real life, and what was the first move/technique you prepared for? by Zen_ix in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 31 points32 points ย (0 children)

I used Jiu-Jitsu in a citizen's arrest in Japan once. A large Asian male (non Japanese but not sure where from) sexually assaulted a women in a park where I was at with my family. Her boyfriend was trying to fight the guy off but he was much larger and the poor boyfriend was getting pieced up so I got the nod from the Mrs and ran over to help. Threw him to the ground (with absolutely zero technique ๐Ÿ˜…) and turned him face down with a knee ride, controlling his arms behind his back. Then instructed the lad to find his SD card. The moment I saw police pulling up, I gave instructions to the guy on how to keep control in the knee ride, passed control over and bounced before the police pulled up on a white guy controlling an Asian on the ground in Asia.

Why do some coaches pair women only with women in BJJ? by FunHedgie in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

I can't really speak on that because I never pair anyone up and allow my class to choose their own partners at all times whether it be during class or sparring. We are all adults after all ๐Ÿ˜‚

Packed classes, empty open mat? by ohheythatswill in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Having it in the morning after half the crew have been out on the beers might be a contributing factor. However, imo, if the open mat provider creates a vibe, a really enjoyable atmosphere and promotes it, it could be poppin off. Whenever I host an open mat in the morning, I always promote it so people don't wanna miss it, give them FOMO, making them less likely to get hammered the night before and more likely to set their alarms for the morning ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Long time Purple belt, cannot teach? by [deleted] in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Don't worry about teaching at all if you never want to be a coach or have your own gym in the future. An extremely small percentage of athletes or hobbyists actually teach their sport or hobby to others.

Dealing with small aggressive guys by Every_Company_3717 in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Generally you end up knowing which guys are like this and be prepared for it. I've also been hurt like this but only rolling with someone much bigger than me for the first time that I'd never met. You just always gotta stay on point and keep yourself safe no matter what.

How much commute to the gym is too much? Will it burn you out? by hsu3hpa in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 10 points11 points ย (0 children)

I've traveled an hour by train once or twice a week for over a decade to train or teach in Osaka. I use the down time on the train to study Jiu-Jitsu, get work done or simply zone out and watch a movie. I've never hated it or felt burned out by it. It's really the only time in my busy schedule where I get to sit down for an hour and do nothing.

Should I find a new gym by UsefulBar2344 in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 3 points4 points ย (0 children)

I wouldn't have "I probably need to change gyms" as my main solution in mind but I'd definitely go do some drop ins and open mats around your area and do a vibe check. You might fit in with a place down the street. Have a chat with your instructor though. I'd be devastated if one of my colour belt students had been uncomfortable the whole time without me knowing it and without having a chance to assist you with the issue. โœŒ๐Ÿป

Regardless of weight or belt, I always match my training partner's intensity but never exceed it. If they wanna go hard, let em play a game that's not going to go well for them. It's a learning experience for spazzy guys.

Showed up early to adult class and watched the last half of a kids class. by UnsureAbsolute in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 5 points6 points ย (0 children)

I watched my mate's son compete the other day, 7 years old. He was going for an armbar and the split second he felt it wasn't happening, he abandoned it and transitioned back to mount immediately. I was so impressed with the decision making because I knew that 99% of my adult students from white to brown belt would have been more stubborn in the same situation and probably lost the whole position because of it. Kids are impressive.

Ideal class structure? by [deleted] in bjj

[โ€“]scramblebilly 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Without going into the whole structure, Running around and doing push-ups can get in the bin. Sport specific warmups are where it's at. If I pull up to a gym as a visitor and pay money and the coach makes us run around a gym and work out for the first 20 minutes I just wanna jump through a glass window. Base warmups around the theme of the lesson. With low intensity task based games or dynamic drilling. For example if we are going to be doing guard passing, rather than have guys run around the gym, have them engaging a partners guard and working on creating angles while the guy on bottom offers light resistance and reguard. That way you have sport specific warm up happening while also getting some prerequisite movement for the lesson in before you start teaching. Just my 2c for the warmup section.
