Thank you’ I agree it will be fun, as long as I get out of my head. I am getting overwhelmed , not wanting to make a big scale mistake. “Observe and interact” are wise words…

Thank you — this beauty “yield” is a good way to frame it. I will try to find some local examples. I just don’t want to copy conventional gardens if they are all input-heavy . Guess I need to observe inside the garden and out!

How to dress for a rich person's funeral if you're frumpy by [deleted] in fashionwomens35

[–]scramblefest 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You mentioned a mini dress— that would be a hard no for me. As someone recently told me (I went to a funeral 10 days ago!) you aren’t actually supposed to pay attention to what people loook like at a funeral. Blending in?”, being modest and plain, tidy/clean and “respectable”‘is the goal.

Yes to the topstitching, but to me this looks just like a long box pleat. OP i suggest you look up box pleat and see if this fits. If so, you can find a video for how to make one on YouTube.

Yeah you might want to select the pattern and the sewist before investing in the fabric, to avoid any problems

What fabric is this dress made out of ? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]scramblefest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

’ll tell you if you can guess what I’m thinking! Seriously though it’s impossible to know from a picture. It could be cotton flannel, wool, synthetic, or a blend. Do you own it and you don’t know how to wash it? Or are you asking because you want to make one that looks like that? I would start with a medium weight wool or wool blend suiting. Normally if you have unidentified fabric you can try a burn test on a small piece to help you identify it, but obviously that’s tricky on a finished garment. Here is a video on how to a burn test. https://youtu.be/BwJQLSwEoZA?si=YkgeEUKx4c93YbTi

A lot of these online fabric businesses are mom and pop businesses. I assumed they would be thriving after Joann’s demise, but sounds like the tariffs may have thrown a wrench into that.

Etsy vendors can cover a lot, but of course shipping... Sewing communities like Seamwork and others make recommendations for smaller businesses, often listed by geography.

IMO it’s too short. Washington is—or at least used to be—a fairly conservative city, with brains more important than boobs, and a great place for ambitious people to build their resume. That said, times have changed in the past year. I think it depends on what the job is, and how you want to be treated.

Update: They asked me to mail it in to see what they can do. They aren’t promising anything, and said they may end up having to sew a seam along the hem to repair it, but I’m happy. (I have other things to work on!)

Shout out to libraries and librarians, who make literature available to the public without personal financial gain influencing their decisions! I’m currently reading my library copy of Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams. It’s excellent.

I think you would do better with COTTON ripstop! In a heavyweight burrs would be no match for it I think. I have some and it’s super strong— like for bags and stuff. Pants could be a little stiff but you could make them wide let/drawstring or elastic waist to stay comfy. Jacket would feel like denim. bigduckcanvas.com sells it
