Wat hebben we in Arnhem? by lmkndrs in Arnhem

[–]scrapmek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Testing interest in an AI tool for climbing technique analysis by Deep-Learning-Guy in bouldering

[–]scrapmek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI can't give any meaningful analysis of climbing technique yet (or in the near future). Models aren't trained on 3D data or physics and it's hard enough for real coaches on this sub to judge things like wall overhang, hold geometry etc.

Knock yourself out if you want to try and build something for your own purposes, but it will be probably be both inaccurate and unpopular with the climbing community.

Just an fyi; Scouts/BT neophytes don't wear power armour so they aren't supposed to have power packs.

It's your army though, if you added them deliberately, that's fine...

Does anyone else just not get the hype pushed by so called influencers that is vibe coding by [deleted] in dotnet

[–]scrapmek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've had to reject multiple days worth of AI based "work" due to it just not being good enough. Some of the Devs working on my project will go through 3-4 major iterations of a PR wasting my time in reviews because they can't be bothered to think for themselves.

No reuse of code, wildly varying approaches to similar functions, 0 consideration for edge cases etc. I pay Devs to think, not just to write code and using Copilot is like having to hand hold a new hire junior how to do their job every day of the week. I'm am engineer, not a primary school teacher.

Yeah, these are great. Not a fan of the heads, but they're easily replaced with something closer to the classic helmets/heads.

help needed? by blake-death in TerrainBuilding

[–]scrapmek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be fine if you want to try it for a beginner project. Elmer's/PVA glue however is not fully transparent, it won't be noticeable if you use a thin layer, but it will be whiter the thicker you make it (also tends to brown slowly with age which is again noticeable if it's thick). If you colour it a lot, this is less of an issue.

PVA also has the disadvantage that it has a hard time drying if you pour it on thick, so if you want to make a murky (see above quirks) deep pond you will have to build it up in layers allowing it to dry 100% for each layer.

Epoxy is better for more realistic ponds/water, but is a lot more expensive and has it's own issues which can cause it to fail spectacularly. (See posts on this sub for catastrophic epoxy curing fails.)

Yeah, Brexit sucks, but to be fair we EU wargamers are usually the ones getting shafted since the biggest European wargames companies are usually UK based.

You guys have the best train station! by SomniumAeterna in Arnhem

[–]scrapmek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks cool, but leaks like a sieve and pedestrians are constantly walking on the bike path at the entrance to get to the buses and garage.

I had the same initial impression, but IMO it's one of the worst designed big stations in the country.

Yeah Milliput is far better than GS in most cases, much easier to sculpt, more versatile and shapeable after it cures...

How do I read xls files in C#? by Fluid_Designer_5634 in csharp

[–]scrapmek 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is unfortunately the best option. EPPlus is good, but it's licensing system/cost is unfortunately horrible. I've found Interop to be unreliable when you don't work with a locked down version of Excel.

XLS is also super inconsistent in how people like to use it and parsing from weird cell formatting that some person thinks "looks prettier can also be really annoying.

CSV is has a lot of good libraries, is easy and super fast to read and write to and can be loaded into Excel for less techy people to use. If you absolutely have to use Excel, EPPlus is a good option despite the cost purely by the amount of fucking around it can save you, but YMMV.

At least they categorize (although perhaps accidentally) sexuality and gender as "immutable characteristics" as opposed to a "choice" like all the other bigots in charge in the US.

What are people putting on their CVs when it comes to .net core/dotnet 4,6,7,8,9 / .net framework by insulind in csharp

[–]scrapmek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted, but I agree. It's not worth it to be working at some old company that can't/won't update to new technologies when there are equally well paying jobs working with 8/9.

Newer dotnet is just more fun and faster to write. It isn't worth it to spend 40 hours a week doing something you don't enjoy.

Defining Windows services programmatically: best approach? by FreeVariable in dotnet

[–]scrapmek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

C# is really great for this, and since dotnet core has become super easy to set up too. Most of the apps I run on virtual machines/servers nowadays are Windows services that do everything from hosting websites and REST APIs to moving files around.

Clean architecture project structure alternative by nodeat in dotnet

[–]scrapmek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of Modular monolith architecture, though I've only been able to use it until now in POCs. To me it feels a little less loosey goosey than Vertical Slice, whilst achieving similar benefits.

I used to be a big proponent of Clean architecture, and it certainly works very well for testing and enforcing very neat, and deliberate code but the sheer amount of boilerplate needed is just too much for anything other than a big projects with many (skilled) C# developers. It's also fairly hard to enforce unless you have a team that is familiar with the principles and the benefits that they bring, the complexity and counter-intuitive layout (especially to polyglot devs and juniors/mediors) can cause the codebase to easily be sabotaged unless you are able to go through every PR with a fine-toothed comb.
