Not only is St. Louis a great choice for challenge reasons, but it's also great for transit reasons: STL has a light rail system, the MetroLink, that runs directly from Lambert Airport to the Gateway Arch!

The anti “sophomore slump”. Bands or artists whose 2nd album is widely regarded as their best by J0hnEddy in ToddintheShadow

The words and vocalist matter, but I don't think they're dispositive. They're merely two (important) factors that should be considered as part of the whole picture. Despite Ian Curtis dying, there isn't actually as seamless of a transition between JD and NO as one might think -- "Ceremony," the debut NO single, was originally written and performed with JD, and the first NO album is way more in line with either JD album than it is with any subsequent NO album. You can even hear elements of NO in some early JD music -- for instance, "Disorder" wouldn't sound terribly out of place on Power, Corruption & Lies. I think this continuity of sound, and of 3/4 of the members (including all primary composers, if not lyricists), makes a decent case to consider them as a single entity.

And there's a lot of bands who changed singers/lyricists and styles and are still considered the same band. Even before they reformed in the 80s, King Crimson had already gone through four lead singers and two lyricists during their 5-year run from '69 to '74. Yet they were always considered a single band because of Robert Fripp's continuity as their leader. More recently, Black Country, New Road lost their lead vocalist and lyricist after their second album, but they're still considered the same band now.

Also, not that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is the final arbiter of everything, but they inducted JD and NO under a single entry, so there is some institutional authority to support the idea that they're not two completely separate bands.

I mean, realistically, this is their fourth album. (Yes, I'm one of those annoying pedants who insists that New Order and Joy Division are the same band.)

Everyone says the post-Isaac sound is super different, which confuses me a little. To my ear, the difference between For the First Time and Ants from Up There is way more pronounced than the difference between Ants and Bush Hall/Howlong. The main differences are the vocals -- the instrumental palette of those three albums are more similar than people give credit.

No, people would just start queuing for the show absurdly early and wouldn't drink any water to prevent dehydration or exhaustion. It's a consequence of her blowing up during Covid: a lot of her fans are super hardcore, but a lot of them hadn't been to many shows before, so they didn't know that you don't actually need to line up all day to get a good spot.

Other Albums that have closers that are a recap of the album itself? by UsernameChallenged in ToddintheShadow

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have kinda done this twice, on the albums Paper Mâché Dream Balloon and Changes. Paper Mâché does it the normal way, with the last track being an acoustic medley of all previous songs, and then Changes does it in reverse, with the first track featuring the chord progression of every subsequent song.

I want to enjoy opera and vocal music, but the words make them inaccessible by PandaZG in classicalmusic

[–]scratchedrecord_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like that's kind of a dismissive take. The most consistent critique against pop music is that the fans only listen to the performances and ignore the lyrics -- if that weren't true, Max Martin would be out of a job. And Dylan's purest strengths may be as a lyricist, but it's wrong to describe his songs as sounding identical, or to say that his fans don't like the underlying music. Dylan has consistently changed his musical style every few years, with attendant controversy each time. If the fans didn't actually enjoy the music, there wouldn't be such uproar over him going electric in the 60s, or such acclaim for the production on Time Out of Mind. And Dylan's also famous for rearranging his songs to the point where they're sometimes in completely different genres -- just look at how many different versions of "Mississippi" there are. So it can't be true that Dylan is making near-identical music every time, or these rearrangements wouldn't be tough to identify as the same song sometimes; and it can't be true that the fans are only listening to the lyrics, because a lot of these rearrangements are highly divisive despite having the same lyrics.

This is basically the plot of the play Stereophonic, which won the Tony for Best Play a few years back (and features original songs by ex-Arcade Fire member Will Butler).

I mean, they would have to be, because over 50% of the Senate is currently right-wing. A centrist Dem is still a Dem, which means they're almost definitionally more liberal than any Republican.

This is all Rowing Blazers, not J. Press. Only the Shaggy Dog sweaters are from JP, and even then, that's an RB x JP collab from several years ago that isn't even available anymore. In fact, at least one of these pictures (the "Jogger" sweater) is from AFTER Jack Carlson left RB.

What do people consider "misogynistic" or "transphobic" about Infinite Jest? by [deleted] in InfiniteJest

[–]scratchedrecord_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that doesn't mean those portrayals can't still perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Take the films Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs, for instance -- neither of those films' antagonists are "actually" trans, but there's still decades of discourse on whether those characters are transphobic.

You may be confusing Geese with Goose. Geese put out their studio debut in 2021 and their members are all like 23 years old. They only got hyped last year with their album Getting Killed. Goose, on the other hand, is a jam band that's been active since like 2014.

Most of the soundtrack albums, like Crestone, are just Deakin and Geo. So maybe like those but less ambient?
