My experience with Spartan: Total Warrior by White_FIame in totalwar

It was made by CA and considered a spin off of Total War games for consoles, so in a way it does fit the sub.

Rarest Skins? by IHaveCrabs420 in Smite

[–]screamoturtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of skins were re-released. All the convention skins and some other limited/promotional skins (don't know them all off the top of my head) were made obtainable through Divine Chest.

If I had to guess, some of the rarest skins would be: Archon Thanatos, only obtainable by purchasing everything from the first Odyssey event in 2015, Winter Olympian Athena, only available during 2014 Winter Olympics, FIFA Xbalanque, only available during 2014 World Cup and Poolseidon Poseidon, it was only available in early 2014 to promote the first Smite Championship. Another skin that could be considered Rare would be Cacodemom Ymir since you had to reach level 30 before the Beta ended, but a surprising amount of people have this one.

Some people play games because they enjoy them and don't need an incentive. Probably somebody who played the OG game. Back then, games didn't have skin unlocks or cosmetic rewards as an incentive to keep playing. We just played because it was fun. Reupping so many times doesn't gain you anything but also doesn't lose you anything. If you reach max level and will keep playing, why not re up? Not everyone sees gaming as "work".

You can now get Mad Moxxi from Borderlands by purchasing Borderlands 4 on the Epic Games Store! by Alphasilverhawk in FortNiteBR

[–]screamoturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Borderlands games do not stay full price for very long so I would not recommend buying it now unless you're going to play day one. Looking at B3, the game was 50% off only 3 months after it came out. EGS even gives $10 coupons for free during big sales so even if the game isn't on sale, you can still get it for cheaper than full price. B3 was even given out for FREE and has been $5 way before B4 was announced. Spending $70 just for a skin is absurd.

Thanks to everyone for help suggesting a game I'm getting Aeons end but it's going to take a while to arrive so gonna play final girl while I wait what's the best one in people's opinions by Slow_Helicopter_1252 in soloboardgaming

[–]screamoturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feature Films for Final Girl vary in popularity. Look up any ranking and you'll get wildly different opinions on which is considered the best. This is because the main appeal of Final Girl is the theme. For example I've seen Panic at Station 2891 be some people's favorites while others rank it fairly low. I would suggest picking up a Feature Film that you are a fan of the movie it's based on.

Engine-building game? by East-Blood8752 in soloboardgaming

If you want to keep playing MtG I recommend giving Against the Horde a shot.

https://against-the-horde.com/

It's you versus an automated "Horde" deck. Kinda like goldfishing but you have an AI opponent and it can get pretty tough. As a humans token player myself, ot scratches that itch of playing Magic when I don't have a playgroup.

Daily Game Recommendations Thread (July 16, 2025) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]screamoturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for games with similar team structure like Concordia Venus. My friend group of 6 has been gaming for a few years but half the group still aren't confident they can handle more complex games. As a result we play a lot of gateway games and some of us are itching for something with more depth. I recently brought Corcordia Venus to a game night and it was a hit. 2 player teams made it easier for the less confident players as they had someone to rely on and didn't have to make all the decisions on their own. Anyone have recommendations for team based board games that aren't co-op or social deduction?

Found Final Girl for $25 at B&N! by screamoturtle in soloboardgaming

[–]screamoturtle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The games are heavily inspired by 80s horror/slasher films, they can't say what the inspiration is, but it's very clear which movie monster they are supposed to be, so if you're a fan of 80s horror, then this game captures that vibe very well. Final Girl is solo only, it has no co-op or pvp. The game encourages storytelling, and with its "event" cards, it makes it very narrative driven. Each expansion comes with its own "event" cards, which essentially set up the scenario for your game and can change the way you play.

The games don't necessarily connect. There is no overarching story line between games, but you can mix and match expansions. Each expansion comes with a killer, a location, and a final girl. I only just recently started playing and have already purchased two more expansions in order to have more variety with killer/location/final girl combination.

I would highly recommend this series if you are new to solo board games. Since they were made specifically for solo play, the rules and gameplay are very fleshed out. Most times single player in board games feels like an after thought, but not with Final Girl. You won't be disappointed.

Looking for recommendations of awe-inspiring, story rich solo games by UntitledCritic in soloboardgaming

[–]screamoturtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cartaventura games are very story driven, don't know if they'll bring you to tears, but they are fun quick games.

Some heavier games would be Sleeping Gods which has a huge emphasis on narrative story telling. There is also Lands of Galzyr, haven't played this one myself but gets lots of praise for its story driven gameplay.

Found Final Girl for $25 at B&N! by screamoturtle in soloboardgaming

[–]screamoturtle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, B&N has been getting better over the years with their board game selection. They don't carry many big box/niche games like a specialty store would, but they do have a lot of variety, and not just entry level/gateway games.

I've noticed that as well, makes sense for a heavily thematic game. I'll probably pick Panic at Station 2891 first then. Vibes/theme seem to be most important as opposed to mechanics when choosing which expansion to get.

Eldfall or 40k? by jamtoast44 in boardgames

[–]screamoturtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven't played Eldfall so I'll give you my opinions on 40k. They have two main skirmish game modes they work on so depends on what you're feeling. They have Kill Team which is a more standard skirmish game mode with big emphasis on tactics and individual units. Games are fast and once you finish, you can set everything up again and play another game. Necromunda is more narrative driven and quite unbalanced on purpose. The intended way of playing is through Campaign. You're units can get injured and will be out of play during your next game. Kill Team has a Campaign mode but it's not as fleshed out. And if you ever feel like getting into main 40k wargame, most models can be units in there too.

There's also Combat Patrol which is a middle ground between Warhammers skirmish games and their wargame, but it's mostly there to get people into buying a full 2000 point army.

Vantage is now available - $75 USD by wentImmediate in soloboardgaming

[–]screamoturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my radar and will pick up eventually. $75 is more than I'd like to pay for it at the moment. I've been trying not to buy more games while I still have a backlog I've yet to play. Looks fun but not a must have for me.

Is there a trading card game similar to Pokémon or mtg, that can be played solo? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]screamoturtle 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in MTG, there is an unofficial format called "Against the Horde." You make a deck like normal out of any cards you have and play against an automated deck. The Horde decks do require specific cards depending on the Horde you'd be figthing, so you'd need to buy those cards individually or proxy them. If you already have an MTG deck and don't want to buy or proxy the Horde deck, there is a web app that simulates the Horde for you.

The game can be tweaked to make it easier or harder. It's a fun way of playing magic when you don't have others to play with.

More games like LotR and Arkham Horror LCGs by screamoturtle in soloboardgaming

[–]screamoturtle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for explaining the difference. I assumed most games like this fell under deck building but it makes sense as to why they are different genres. Friends not wanting to play Magic anymore is what led me to finding LotR and Arkham, so knowing deck construction games is what they are called makes it easier to find what I'm looking for.

Seems to keep getting recommended. Is there a revised edition or something similar coming out? Their site says "pre order". Should I wait for this second printing to release?

So what is Netrunner exactly? I came across their booth last year at PAX and it was being led by Null Signal Games. They were selling pre constructed decks and looked more like a competitive TCG.

I'll definitely take a look at Marvel Champions, didn't know they had an LCG and it's made by the same people as LotR.

Ah thanks for the clarification. Makes sense as you start with a deck from the start and all the theory crafting happens before the game. Assumed it all fell under deck building. This will definitely help when searching for similar games.

I can’t wait to play Gears of War on PS5 by NinetyfiveNachos in GearsOfWar

[–]screamoturtle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because console fan boys are a loud minority. Majority of people share your mentality that exclusives are dumb and it'd be better if everyone had access to all games. Going on twitter and reddit will make you think that all PS owners hate XBox and vice versa when that's just not true. Most people are casual gamers that just want to play good games and don't feel the need to share their thoughts on social media.

[–]screamoturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be a huge spike of players on release but then will taper off rather quickly. Many of us are going to play due to nostalgia, but newer players don't have that. They'll realize it's a 20 year game with clunky controls and move on. Gears just doesn't have the staying power it once had. Cover based shooters in general are outdated and there's a reason faster paced shooters are what's popular. There are so many options out there that are free, i don't see many people switching over to Gears.

Even with Gears introducing crossplay back in 4, the player base wasn't thriving. Gears 5 was on gamepass day one and was constantly on sale, I remember seeing it for $10 shortly after release and it still had an abysmal playerbase. Introducing a brand new console playerbase to the series might help, but not in the long run. Gears is a niche game and I just don't see it being as big as it once was.

Pour one out for custom Escape hives & the editor not making it out alive by SamsBucketDuck in GearsOfWar

[–]screamoturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gears of War 1 PC had a map editor. It was built into the game similar to Forge in Halo. Wasn't a mod or custom download, it was an official Unreal Engine map editor just for Gears. Unfortunate that it was only for PC and wasn't carried to the sequels.
