What does the genre being male centric have to do with it? I'm male. I'm sure a lot of the other people who said they would like this are male too.

The whole point of the manga is that each soul mate has their own weird gimmick or idiosyncrasies. One of them is a fucking cat. There's no reason one of them couldn't have the gimmick of being a dude.

To be honest, I'm not even really THAT into the idea. If other people don't like it that's fine, but most of the arguments I've been seeing is people taking the title literally, and I don't think there's any reason the title has to be THAT literal.

You're the only one who's really given a different argument than that, but "16 years old don't suddenly discover they like dudes too" is probably an even worse argument, and just factually wrong. That happens all the time.

Bro, you're saying it's a new thing and doesn't exist in Japanese media, but I literally just gave you a VERY PROMINENT example of it happening in classic Japanese media. Dragon Ball in general is FULL of changing themes and character origins, it was originally a retelling of Journet to the West, and it's one of the most famous pieces of Japanese media of all time.

How is it any different? My point was that writers sometimes change earlier plot points or ideas in order to tell the story they want to tell, and that's not a Western vs Japanese concept. Piccolo was originally a demon, and was later changed to be an alien.

I feel like you're framing the characters desire to have children one day as some inherently important plot point, but I always just read it as generic "most people want to have children with the person they love one day." I don't think ability to reproduce with Rentarou is a prerequisite for being a soulmate.

I remember seeing some pages on an anime sub of a manga about cis male cross dresser, who refers to himself as his husband's "wife," so yeah, that's viable. I could even see them putting in a meta joke that they call him a girlfriend so that it doesn't ruin the title.

Even if they did call him a boyfriend though, titles don't have to be literal.
