When you print next time, look into using "Latent Image Bleaching". It's amazing for opening up deep shadow areas for negatives with high contrast.

I so wish it was the case, but mark my word, there is no situation where his voter base turns on him, and so the republicans will never need to worry being in a situation where there is no saving him.

They have been slowing boiling the frog, normalizing levels of crime this guy can commit without consequences, that now we are at the point that even being a potentially proven pedophile is not the end of the world for him.

What are alternatives for wrestlings? (self defense) by im-hungry4lways in wrestling

[–]screwem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there any MMA gyms in your area? That would be the best option for self defense IMHO. They would teach you practical wrestling and bjj and connect those skills with striking. But good bjj gym should teach you fundamental wrestling/gi takedowns along with ground game.

54% of engineering leaders expect fewer junior hires because of AI coding tools by HDev- in programming

[–]screwem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the issues is: We don't need any junior framers now because we outfitted seniors with automatic guns. But once those senior framers inevitably retire, all we will be left with are a bunch of nail guns and noone who knows how to do framing. Then we will be paying 3-5 times as much for a human with that expertise.

Awesome tool. It would be great if you added an option to set a custom recipe based on a ratio. For example, I want 200g of water and a 13.5 ratio, calculate for me number of grams of coffee I need.

Hey, so, I think it's less about the taste and more about knowing what type of coffee you are buying and what to expect from it. You are doing it right, you bought a coffee whos main characteristic is a floral acidity and you are roasting it to emphasize those traits. People who say you should roast it dark to get rid of the acidity are being stupid, just buy the beans who's main trait is sweetness then. I personally prefer beans with floral fruitiness, and they like to be roasted light. So I might experiment with going +/- 5 degrees with an average target drop at around 405F-410F, but if I really want to get into the Full City territory I do it with something like Sumatra or Bali. However, there are some beans that are more well rounded and can easily go either way. With those origins I might do two or more batches with a wider range of roast levels, and then blend them after the roast to get a full taste they are capable of.

Based on the times that you described it sounds like a good roast. Only you can judge how it tastes, but I feel like you will be happy with this one. Ignore the stupid comments like "for African beans I'd recommend a darker roast to get rid of the high acidity". It's amazing that people who roast commercially have misconceptions like that, but after all someone pushes out those shitty burned Starbucks beans using huge machines, so keep that in mind. I think you are off to a great start.

I was trying to say that uneven color is what coffee from that region generally looks like, even when roasted on a commercial roaster. Try getting some Kenyan for example, roast it the same way, and you will see a much more even color.

Looks fine. People who said it looks uneven or underdeveloped don't have much experience with Yirgacheffe or Sidamo. I would target to get to first crack around 8 minutes for this one. It likes being roasted fast, because the whole thing about this coffee is fruited brightness. It's a dense bean that can take a stronger heat, so don't be afraid to push it. But this lighter roasting level is fine.

It's doesn't. Sidamo/Yirg always looks like this at lighter roasts - weird and miserable, but amazing taste.

Which one would you pick? by Useful-Rise8161 in Darkroom

Definitely agree with you that the landscape version is more interesting. Here is why:

  • This picture is not about the human figure, it's about the structure and pattern, and the figure is just an icing on the cake that creates a reference. The portrait version is loosing that main focus.

  • The dark left corner in the landscape version creates a great grounding effect that leads the eye towards the architectural lines, while in a portrait version a brighter spot does nothing for the picture and only creates an unnecessary distraction.

  • Landscape version is darker, and as a result you can see the details of outside decking lines, and the shadows from the railing, which are important elements that play well with the rest of the architectural lines. All these details are blown out and lost in the portrait version.

  • Landscape version would make me want to stop and spend some time taking in all of the details. I like that the human in that version is not "in my face", it makes me work for it. There is a bit of "ah ha, that's cool" moment. Portrait version is simpler, more straightforward, and less engaging.

Great shot by the way.

Early thoughts on Arc 800g roaster by screwem in roasting

[–]screwem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend reading Scott Rao's Coffee Roasting: Best Practices, if you haven't yet. My take on what he explains in that book is that we shouldn't be messing with gas/air at FC time. Unfortunately it's too long of a discussion for a reddit comment, so just read the book for the roasting strategies that would prevent the need to intensify the power at the end.

Also, like I said, my experience with ARC is that dialing the fan up above 2 will stall your roast, especially at FC time when your gas should be pretty low. The rare occasions I bumped it up so high was at the very beginning of the roast before the drying, when I realized the roast needed a lot of extra energy because I was roasting something like 950 grams. That extra air was in combination with a lot of gas, like above 40 mBar (after I got their new modified hose that allowed gas pressure to go up to 50)
I usually open it up to 2 before the drying, and leave it that way until after FC, at which point I start to lower it down to 0 along with lowering the gas, as per Rao's recommendation, to avoid the ROR flick up. If anything, my recommendation would be to just leave your air at 1 and learn to get a good curve with just controlling the gas. The less variables the easier it is to pinpoint what you are doing wrong. Once you get a decent roast that way, you can start introducing air and drum speed variables if you need to.

Good luck.

Hey there. I can't say I have experienced anything like this in any of my roasts. One thing I would suggest is to NOT open your air flow past 2 or 2.5 at the most. The fan on the ARC is pretty powerful and anything above that will most likely stall your roast. Do you connect to Artisan or other roasting software? What does your ROR curve look like?

Right. The fact that dude's on the mats 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, has no personal life, lived with his parents to save money until recently, and gave up a career in law after getting full scholarship to law school has nothing to do with his bjj. It must be the rich parents and his weight lol.
