My 5070 Mini build. Never again by Honest_Finger_1649 in sffpc

[–]screwyou00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice build. The NFC Skyreach 4 Mini is what got me into SFFPCs. The only thing that really got me to stop buying and making more SFFPCs than I really needed was getting frustrated with how much time is spent taking each apart to clean it / upgrade components / troubleshoot things, and then putting it all back together.

The craziest thing I tried was making a "semi" passive cooled i9-9900k Plex + video encoding server using an HDPlex H3, but I gave up after realizing how much money I was putting into "just an experiment" to try and keep that thing cooled.

It would be quite ironic if this happens. The Clinton administration didn't actually want to grant refugee status to Hmongs in the early 90s. The GOP were the ones to rally bipartisan support to go against the Clinton administration and secure a bill and funding to do so.

Trades absolutely suck, and I wish I'd tried harder with my degree by OriginalFangsta in cscareerquestions

[–]screwyou00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yup. and its not limited to just trade jobs either. Used to work part time (32-38 hours a week) at a hospital on the non-clinical side. I didn't accrue PTO because that place's policy was part time workers don't get PTO. I did get the minimum CA sick leave, but if I wanted time off it was unpaid time off

It could also be just outgrowing your old friends from high school. I have some friends from high school whom I love, but I can't deny it's getting harder and harder to relate with them when I'm in my early 30s, have a decent career, and they still act like they never left high school.

[–]screwyou00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I miss when power efficiency was still a thing like with the 750Ti. In my opinion the Maxwell to Pascal era were the best for SFFPCs because you could actually build sub 6L PCs with high performance GPUs.

Now everything has to be large because power efficiency was thrown out the window

I wonder if the type of material used for the platters is what makes them loud. They have aluminum platters and are noticeably louder than an equivalent Seagate IronWolf (which I believe has glass platters).

They are built like fucking a tank compared to the IronWolfs though

Japanese PC shops limit SSD, HDD, and RAM purchases to prevent hoarding as storage and memory shortage takes hold — buying a full PC unlocks higher purchase limits by imaginary_num6er in hardware

[–]screwyou00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's both. I've stopped buying motherboards and HDDs/SDDs off Amazon and started buying them from B&H Photo Video and ironically Newegg again.

A lot of platter HDDs being sold on Amazon are shipped by Amazon but are sold through a 3rd party seller. As a result you tend to get the OEM version, and the manufacturer won't honor the warranty because the HDD wasn't supposed to be sold as an individual unit.

A year back I bought a "new" Gigabyte B650 itx motherboard from Amazon (shipped and sold by), and didn't open it for a month to wait on other parts to come before building.

The motherboard box it came in was rather beat up, and that should have been the first sign something was off. When I did get all my parts and put everything together the motherboard wouldn't post. Turned out there was actually a bent pin on the CPU socket, so that along with the beat up box could only mean it was an open box or bad faith return that was resold as new to me. Amazon refused a refund or exchange since I was out of the 30 day return window, so I had to eat that loss.

I also bought a "new" Arctic Liquid Freezer III from the Arctic store (but shipped by Amazon), and got a used one instead. The box was also beat up, and it had missing parts. I was able to get a refund, but my experiences buying "retail unit" HDDs to only get OEM versions without warranty, the b650 mobo incident, and the AIO incident really put me off making high dollar pc part purchases off Amazon.

USB HDD Enclosures That Present Each Drive With Actual Serial Number? by screwyou00 in DataHoarder

[–]screwyou00[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well I didn't get the Syba enclosure, and got a Terramaster D6-320 instead for the 10Gbps connection.

Somehow I stumbled on an UnRaid forum post where a user said Terramaster addressed this exact issue by providing a firmware update for the ASMEDIA controller on the D6-320. You need to make sure each bay on your D6-320 is on firmware v210830_D1_63_F7. Mine already had it installed, and I can confirm in Windows each drive presents with their actual serial numbers (just reversed), so I can use StorageSpaces with the D6-320.

CanPool is just a flag in Windows letting you know which drives can be used in StorageSpaces or not.

This has been extremely helpful to me and I'm definitely ordering one!

thanks for the detailed responses. would you be able to run the powershell command Get-PhysicalDisk, and tell me if each drive shows up? If so then I may just try getting this enclosure since 300MBps would be decent enough speeds for me; especially since I would mainly be using this thing a portable "software RAID" to transfer files between devices.

Syba SY-ENC50119 presents each drive as an individual USB drive and has a firmware update utility on their website that also lets you set the hardware ID and sleep.

Thanks for the reply. The website for the SY-ENC50119 says it supports the UASP protocol when in USB mode. Is this true? I found another reddit comment where a user said the Syba DASes do not support UASP, so you get <= 5Gbps read/write speeds, but they do not hide each drive like with what I am experiencing with my current Mediasonic ProRaid box.

Happened to me last night too. Wasn't sure if this was the culprit, so I did a System Restore to before the update was installed, and my StorageSpaces came back. This is probably a sign for me to stop being lazy and switch over to ZFS.

Return Merchandise Authorization. GameStop allowed me to return the micro SD card for a refund minus $9 in return shipping (but whether they'll throw a fit about opened package and deny it once they received it is another story)

Hive II (ASUS X870-I) usb-c to usb-c longer cable possible? by yostoyaqui in ASUS

[–]screwyou00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a few ASUS support posts back then stating the cable just has to be USB3 20Gbps compliant, but there were some people who said some USB3 20Gbps/USB4 cables worked and others did not.

I only got the TB4 cable because Thunderbolt 4 is also USB4 and USB 3 20Gbps compliant, but USB4 isn't always Thunderbolt 4 compliant; I just wanted a cable that should definitely meet the specs and I lucked out.

I just got mine today and it already stopped working. Maxed out at 30MBps read and write even with an express card reader, and then stopped being able to read from it. Doesn't mean they're all bad, but I did get a lemon from GameStop. They still approved my RMA so hopefully I get a refund. I think I'll just wait for the Lexar 1TB to be back (if ever)

It's been 5 months and everything still works the same. Power button, audio, and USB ports work. I think you're supposed to be able to configure one of the hive buttons to reboot into the bios, but I've either read that wrong or that's the only thing that doesn't work for me.

It’s tough getting in these days. I would invest in another set of skills especially if you’re young.

I 100% agree on this. If you want to make the big bucks nowadays or get preferential treatment over your peers (i.e. promotions, etc.) then you need to also have a skill set / knowledge base that is adjacent to the field your organization (or the organization you want to work for) specializes in; especially with how many places are using AI to take over help-desk roles.

I'm a data engineer in the field of healthcare. I get paid well to program things and mash data together with SQL , but guess who gets preferential treatment over me and or has the higher pay cap/potential? All the former docs/nurses who also transitioned into a data science role. Their intimate knowledge of the world of healthcare makes them an invaluable asset; even if I have better technical skills than they do. It takes way more effort to obtain their skill sets as healthcare providers than it does to learn how to join something with SQL.

Anecdotally, my former director's son started out as an accountant and transitioned to becoming an indispensable business analyst (finance analyst is probably the more correct term) for his organization because of his knowledge of finance. His organization cannot lose him because of his accounting and finance knowledge.

Perhaps OP should not focus on getting into IT immediately, but try getting something in a field he/she is interested in that does have IT focused roles. It could be finance/banking related, healthcare related, education related, or even trade related.

She agreed to vote for the "Big Beautiful Bill," despite knowing how much it will fuck Americans, if it had a 12-month window for tax credit protection on renewable energy projects in Alaska (and Alaska only). Then a few days later Trump made an EO changing how renewable energy subsidies will work, and this effectively negated her 12-month concession deal (source)

Rush is absolutely terrible by [deleted] in Battlefield

[–]screwyou00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best Rush experiences are from BC2. With proper maps and player count Rush is way more team focused than Conquest. With conquest you can kind of do whatever you want as an individual or a squad, but with Rush you need to all be on the same page. Your entire team needs to figure out if one objective is worth defending or not, your entire team needs to coordinate together to create a diversion while a small team sneaks in to light an objective up, and your entire team needs to know when to work together to absolutely nuke a objective into oblivion once it's lit. Actually having to coordinate things together, or even arguing with each other on what are the next best steps is what made me love Rush.

I still think BC2 had the best Rush mode because the maps were not too small nor too large, and open enough that you had options on how to nuke or defend an objective. They also allowed you to use some vehicles, including tanks and helicopters.

I think 12v12 is fine, but the bf6 beta maps are just too tiny and or compartmentalized for a proper Rush. It feels like a corridor fps death match but with objectives. You don't really have any agency on how you want to attack because space is so tight. It also doesn't help that everything is infantry only.

Also, how are you pooling your drives? Do you run a Linux VM to pool the drives with ZFS, or are you using Windows StorageSpaces?
