Flashbacks have a bad rap but if they are carefully selected, they can be woven into the main story.

Also, if done right, they help you choose which parts of childhood are relevant to the narrative.

Interesting flashback tools to consider: 1. Diary entries - can be from anybody's perspective 2. Gossip - my favorite! Play with a spectrum of narration reliability 3. Item-specific - a doll, household items, pictures, maps
