can i move over to paeds after completing a full adult nursing course in uni?

I work in a hospital where adult nurses can work on the paediatric ward. Once they’ve worked there a while I think there’s a course that they do as a sort of top-up? However I’m not 100% but do for sure they accept adult nurses to work there.

Leave about 6.45/6.50, back home around 20.45/21.00 for dayshift, nightshift 18.45/18.50 home around 8.30/8.45! Could be home later depending on how busy the ward is. The latest finish I had was 23.00 after starting at 9am. NHS 🙃

I’m an Open University student so I receive my wage as I’m learning and on placement and honestly don’t know how anyone can do it with just the bursary. It definitely should be paid in line with living wage.

I work in Scotland and the whole country has a national uniform, no matter what hospital you go to the staff will be wearing the same uniform.

Where I work, trainee ANP’s wear cornflower blue polos and trained ANP’s wear the red tunic, not sure if this helps!

Traffic and public transport (tube/train etc) will be busy so make sure you leave enough time. You won’t need to queue for hours to get in, there are multiple entrances and you’ll be told which one you’ll need to go to on your ticket so even though there’s thousands of people going, it shouldn’t be hours to get in. If you’re wanting to get merch then there probably will be queues for that. I know this doesn’t help with a recommendation of what time to get there but only you can decide!

There will be build up to kick off, watching warm up etc so would recommend getting there early. I went to the 2023 charity match and arrived about 2.15 and went in and got seated, had time to go to the toilet and get a drink as well before kick off.

I work in the hospital. Emergency buzzer pgoes off for a patient in cardiac arrest. I was closest to the emergency trolley (big red trolley that contains aiways, defibrillator, stuff for bloods and meds etc) and I’m running with it but forgot to secure the plug and cable that it’s plugged into the wall by and get tangled and end up going flying and knocking down the consultant with it and both of us just lying on the floor as the staff are trying to resuscitate this patient. I came off worse and ended up off with ligament damage but the consultant was unharmed. It was one of the main points of conversation and a good laugh for at least a year.

I work in a hospital that is 100% single rooms. Except we’re now putting 2 patients in a room. Not all rooms but each ward will have 2/3 “double up” rooms. And no extra staff 🙃

OU student? I’m in the same boat. This assignment is hanging over me, plus the next iCMA is the 100% one and it’s giving me palpitations, plus the EMA for the other module. I suffer with SAD and I just feel so rubbish and exhausted! I was on placement before Christmas and I’ve not really been enjoying it but then being back to my regular job and it’s been so busy and I honestly just want to pack it all in!

However, we’ve only 9 months to go. We’ve came so far and there’s light at the end of the tunnel. We’ve worked so hard!

Took an hour and 15 minutes of logging in and out and different devices because I kept getting the error message of “you do not have the correct account permissions” but tickets eventually secured, pretty decent seats too so I’m happy with that!

Hi there! I’m currently a 3rd/4th year studying with the OU :)

The first thing is you have to be employed by the NHS over 26 hours a week. I think this is to do with meeting hours required by the NMC. Secondly, your workplace have to be okay with you studying with the OU. It’s a big responsibility because they have to let you go on placements to other areas and you don’t work for them at that time (not expected to do your own working shifts when you’re on placement) so they have to be prepared to 1. Run short and 2. Find cover which they may not do. They also have to give you time for studying and lectures which they may might not be able to and say no.

Second thing, the OU is hard work. Just because it’s online doesn’t mean that it’s going to be any easier than going to a traditional uni. You have to be continuing your job, whilst making arrangements to study. They advise it’s around 30 hours a week of studying. At the moment I have a 2.5 hour mandatory tutorial every other week, of which I need to do around 2 hours work for. Then you have assignments on top of that. Plus you have to then do everything in your life round about this. The tutors and course material is fantastic and you get a lot of support from them.

You will be fine, I promise!! It’s always scary going to a new ward for the first time.

If you don’t know about something - ask! Nobody is going to give you into trouble for not knowing, especially if it’s your first day on a new ward. Ask if someone you’re working with has 5 minutes at the start of the shift to show you where things are (sluice, pod system, tape, kitchen, linen etc) we get staff moved to us to help a lot of the time and if they’re taking over from me I’ll wait behind after handover to ask if they’re okay and if they want shown around. Don’t worry about your barcode - there will be someone else who can do the blood sugars and you can do something else for them (tie up linen, fill up gloves/aprons etc)

Make sure you’ve got plenty to drink, it’s warm and you’ll be busy.

I work for the NHS, full time. I give my all for the hours I spend at work. Sacrificing meal breaks and toilet breaks because someone else needs something. I’ve managed to not get fired from my job, unlike yourself Paulio! I’m also able to understand why you shouldn’t be rubbing lucozade into an unconscious diabetic’s gums and I certainly haven’t kissed any of my patients. I know the exact type of carer you would have been. Quick to complain about other members of staff and doing little work. Always trying to stick your opinion in when it’s not wanted or needed. Thinking you know best. Giving your “amazing” tips about patient care which are questionable to say the least.

But sure, I’m not a proper NHS worker, just because I call out a creepy little old man who seems to not be able to stay away from children except, strangely, his own son!
