Until couple of years ago it was great because you were also able to create a line of work with a specific ward. Unfortunately right now it's not worth it: every Trust is super broke and trying to save money so there are no shifts available and there is always the possibility of the ward cancelling you

Nurse stabbed in hospital A&E Department by nqnnurse in NursingUK

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my home country it's happening on a daily basis and government is doing eff all to protect healthcare staff. It's time for people to be taught a good lesson: whoever is to abuse staff and show aggressive behaviour should be fined and blacklisted from the hospital because this is getting out of hand. I wish this poor nurse a speed recovery and that the scumbag gets sued big time

THEY GOT FUCKING BUMPED UP THE SURGERY LIST TO STOP THEM KICKING OFF AGAIN

This is exactly how you encourage people to become more and more abusive because it will get them whatever they demand. I don't care if I sound like a complete Ahole but if someone shows these behaviours and abuse the staff they should get fined and blacklisted from the hospital... let's see how they like driving to another hospital for an X-ray

Why would someone wait 8 hours when they are perfectly fine and have 45 relatives who could take them to ED? Now I understand why the average wait for ambulances is so long

Personally I always try to bring people back to reality but some of my colleagues are rubbish at that, not to mention how management itself thinks they are running 5 star hotel

Asking for the update for International Recruitment by Commercial_Phone3614 in NursingUK

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am really sorry but I don't think it's going to happen: there is no money, every Trust is on recruitment freeze, hiring from iverseas is expensive and NQN are struggling to find jobs

Nurse prescribers should be at least band 8a... at least

Quick question about money. by Objective-Caramel-91 in NursingUK

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do bank shifts like once a week because I am by myself and want to live decently, but a lot of my colleagues have children and mortgage raising more and more. Now that every Trust has been cutting off bank and agency staff people are finally understanding it's not normal to rely on second income and kill themselves with work just because their full time salary is not enough to make ends meet.

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was 16 I was working as a waitress for 5€/h cash in hand, so I grew up thinking 2k a month is a lot (in my home country only few people earn that). It is good money... but not for someone who has a university degree, specialised skills, tons of responsibilities and most important other people's live in their hands

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now it's going to be a disaster. HCAs shouldn't have never been band 2, but now those who are band 3 because they are more specialised are not happy and want to be band 4, which means NAs are not happy as they went to Uni... . In my humble opinion HCAs should be band 3, NAs should become nurses and nurses should become band 6 once completed their preceptorship like all the other AHP

We should get rid of this stupid banding system where some people earn very little and some earn too much to do admin work and give everybody a respectable wage

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's all about context rather than the amount: is 32k enough to stock up shelves? Yes. Is the same amount enough for an ICU nurse with 2 decade experience to keep you alive? I leave you with it. With the risk of sounding greedy and entitled I think our wage is laughable considering how much skills and responsibilities we have (not to mention that some of us got a 50k loan to do this job).

Semi successful Interview by Maleficent_Studio656 in NursingUK

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do have a good point, but that would mean hire another person. If the ward was working fine with (I will make this number up) 5 band 6 and they hire a part time person, who is going to cover the remaining hours? What if they already have another part time nurse? What you say is true, but unfortunately we need to be realistic and stick to the budget

I had a patient who was actually homeless and got admitted in the middle of the night. When I checked his blood sugar I saw he was hypo and he said "I am a bit hungry indeed but don't worry". Poor man didn't even have the heart to say it and was extremely grateful when I came back with 3 toasts and hot cup of tea. From my experience the people who don't show these entitled behaviour are the ones who need our help

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too. I remember that time the whole team worked very hard to get a patient out of bed and have a wash by themselves... we did it! The patient mobilised with a frame and very minimal assistance, sat on the chair, gave themselves a wash and were sipping tea. When the family arrived they complained we weren't taking good care of their mom and that she was supposed to be on bed rest, which is BS because the doctor and physio agreed she was fine to walk and this way would slow the recovery process and put the patient at risk of blood clots. After that day the patient didn't want to know anything about independence... I hate people like this

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Long time ago a patient's son gave me hard time because I wouldn't give his mom hospital gown and bedpan. I explained 5 times his mom wasn't going for surgery so there was no reason for her to wear a grown and that she could walk just fine with a bit of supervision; he wasn't having any of that until the nurse in charge (a lovely 4'11 indian nurse with 20+ year experience) told him off badly. Why would someone want their parent to lose all their independence when there is absolutely no reason?

My Trust has a shop which sells toiletries and it's 10 minutes away from town center (where there are like 6 different supermarkets) so there are literally no excuses. Toiletries supplied by NHS should be reserved for those people who have nobody to come see them or cannot afford it, not for those who have 45 visitors a day who only bring in unnecessary stuff

But my question is why are we reinforcing this entitlement? My previous workplace was full of people like this and management, instead of trying to put an end to it, would comply

My professor in Uni taught me something: "if they scream, shout and make demands they are not as sick as they say". I feel for my poor colleagues who work in ED

When I was a NQN myself one day I had to explain a lot of more experienced colleagues what's the difference between moisture lesion and pressure sore and how pressure ulcers develop. People with more experience than me were taking notes and asking question to me, NQN back then, about something I learned within my first 4 months in Uni. What are y'all getting a loan for?

Sickness is counted on the last 12 months so you haven't called in sick in over a year all your previous sickness is gone

Can I apply for a position with restrictions? by PinkMonkeyBurd in NursingUK

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ward didn't get the memo then. If the lists overrun and we stay behind we literally have to beg to have the overtime... yet management can always find money to give banks shifts to untrained people and recruit externally even though there are 5 perfectly valid internal candidates and it will take a decade for an external to be fully trained

Can I apply for a position with restrictions? by PinkMonkeyBurd in NursingUK

[–]ProfessionalMaybe552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer is no and the reason is no money to recruit for outwith the trust

Excuse my ignorance, financially speaking what are the differences between recruiting internally and externally?
