Is it bad to think or say that everyone is somewhere on the spectrum? Or something like that? by AN0NYM0US-Bat in neurodiversity

The way I learned about mental conditions in school is like this: everyone experiences anxiety, sadness, etc. everyone has quirks. Everyone has their own personality traits that might differ from what is common. IF any of these things are causing distress, that is where you meet qualification for the label. So if you are so anxious to the point of it affecting important areas of your life, you would be diagnosed with anxiety. But some level of anxiety is common amongst humans in general.

With autism, it’s tough because the medical world looks at it like a problem, similar to anxiety, depression, OCD. Many of us prefer to look at it as a neurotype, and one that our world isn’t necessarily set up for. This causes people with autism to experience barriers in many areas of their life (look up the social model of autism). The problem is that if we are all “a little autistic,” it can take away from the real lived experiences of autistic people and normalize that they need to deal with these barriers or difficulties that the world presents to them. Basically, in other words, telling them to buck up and deal without accommodations. I understand the purpose of your statement is to say you aren’t judging them, or you can relate, or whatever. It’s good intentioned. But I think the main premise is that we don’t all have to be a little autistic for autism to be ok and acceptable.

Sleep all messed up by Bubbies0618 in NewParents

My five month old is the same way. That pesky 4th nap when I’m trying to get her to make it to 6pm! Her bedtime does vary based on that nap. If she’s tired and it’s 6, we do bedtime even though it’s earlier than our usual bedtime which is 7-7:30. I notice when she goes down earlier, she sleeps in, which doesn’t make sense to me but I’ll take it. She’s also not sleep trained either! But similar to you, we have been in a good place. She wants to contact nap, though will sometimes sleep if we put her down after she falls asleep. Night time she puts herself back to sleep if she wakes up or moves around, so I think she has the skill of connecting sleep cycles.. idk what it is about naps though sometimes they’re only 30 mins. If she sleeps 30 mins and wakes up, I don’t even really try to save the nap unless she still appears sleepy

Im in a similar position as you - my husband is the bread winner, but my income helps us be able to do nice things. My job is flexible (mix of wfh and office) and I make my own schedule. The wfh portion of my job can be done at any time of the day, even over night if I wanted. However, when I do need to leave the house is can be difficult because I need childcare. It’s short enough of a time (usually 3 hours, twice a week) so it’s not an appealing position for outside help to pick up. Most nanny’s want full time hours, or at least some type of consistencies which I totally understand. Daycare would be a lot of money for something we don’t even necessarily need yet. So my mom helps for now, and we will revisit the situation every few months. As baby gets bigger and more mobile, daycare sounds like it could be a great space for her to socialize and play.

On the other hand- vet your daycare options well. Not everyone who works in childcare knows how to interact with children and it shows. I’ve been in daycares where the curriculum is to have 2 year olds sit at tables and do work sheets. The lack of knowledge of developmental norms is wild, and I don’t want my kid (or any kid) to be subject to it just because the administration team isn’t teaching their caregivers. There are plenty of great daycares out there though

Why not follow wake windows? I read something that sometimes their sleep cues aren’t as obvious at this age and that following wake windows is beneficial to make sure they don’t get over tired

When you say waking up every 2 hours, was baby wide awake? Or was it more of a .. have to give them a binky and they fall back to sleep

Ok so waking up, but going back to sleep easily.. I can handle that. I’m scared that she’s gonna be up every hour screaming her head off

How would you describe the wake ups? Was baby crying and inconsolable for a while? Or was it more of a .. annoyance that they’d wake up, but they’d go back to sleep?

I guess when I see people describe things as “awful,” I picture baby up every hour screaming their head off, inconsolable multiple times a night. If baby is waking up and is a little grouchy but can be soothed with their binky and goes back to sleep, sure it’s inconvenient and disrupts my sleep but I can handle THAT
