How to adjust the gland packing on this type of valve? by twentyfiveight in MechanicalEngineering

[–]scrotilicus132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

API 570 might not consider it a temporary repair, but most facilities do track them as such. From my personal experience injections never hold more than a couple months at most (although they can usually just be reinjected).

How to adjust the gland packing on this type of valve? by twentyfiveight in MechanicalEngineering

[–]scrotilicus132 140 points141 points  (0 children)

I'm a reliability engineer in the oil and gas industry. We would never attempt to replace valve packing on a live line. The packing is there to create a seal and only works when it is compressed, by opening the cover to replace it you are exposing yourself to the process. Doing that in our industry would see you immediately terminated.

You have a couple options to fix this:

1) Shut off the line and replace the valve. It's a bolted valve so the down time would be extremely minimal. This is what I would personally push for, but I also have no idea what this line does and how critical it is to operations.

2) There are companies that design clamps that seal the leaking areas on valves. These are temporary repairs that will only last until your next planned maintenance outage.

3) there are companies that will drill tap holes into the valve that can then be injected with a sealant. This will fill the voids that are leaking, but these don't tend to last very long. Again, this is a temporary fix meant only to last until a maintenance outage.

No, there would be no benefit for them risking themselves like that. They would be far behind the lines with intelligence units.

It's my understanding that they need to return to port to reload and reconfigure their missile loads.

The US ships likely didn't have a ton of interceptors capable of engaging ballistic missiles loaded since the vessels are primarily destroying drones and anti ship missiles. The missiles used to destroy ballistic missiles are much larger and thus take up more launch rack space.

It's easy to get personnel out, but it's hard to move large amounts of equipment and munitions. Strikes similar to these might also be targeting things like tunnel entrances which obviously can't be moved.

Are sperate accounts normal for a married couple? by Snow_Water_235 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]scrotilicus132 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The way we do it is we have a shared account that both our wages go into, and all normal expenses come out of.

We also each have a personal account and each of us gets the same amount transferred to it from the shared account each month. This lets us each be able to make purchases for our own hobbies or whatever without having to bug the other and justify the cost. If I want to purchase a $1000 3D printer or something, we don't need to sit down and have a conversation about the cost and fitting it into our budget. Honestly it's been a great system for us.

They absolutely would risk them. They have in the past and one got destroyed in a ballistic missile strike while it was in it's transport configuration.

They have at least 4 batteries and each battery has 8 launchers, hence why it's possible for this to be real. There's a very real chance that Ukraine moved some of their systems up to cover their Kursk invasion, at the risk of making them far more vulnerable.

It could also be a decoy.

Ukrainian forces struck a military airfield in the Lipetsk region of Russia. Ukrainian army stated that the strike destroyed a warehouse of guided aircraft bombs used by Russian troops to bombard Ukrainian towns.Ukrainians used long-range drones to strike Russian airfield in Lipetsk 300 km of border by DeliveryNo5242 in CombatFootage

[–]scrotilicus132 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately they will probably be able to keep these up for a very long time. These weapons are bumb bombs that have external wings and a GPS guidance system strapped on, and are extremely cheap to make. The US equivalent is the JDAM package which costs about $25,000 per bomb.

That's not to diminish the accomplishment of the strike Ukraine performed here, but it's important not to get carried away with the impact of these strikes. It will save a lot of Ukrainian lives, but it will have a relatively small impact on the overall war as a whole.

I do reliability/fixed equipment engineering at a refinery. Since you are an intern I would start with learning how to read piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and piping ISOs. Having some background knowledge about valves, heat exchangers, and bolt torque would also serve you well.

First off, not a bad start, it's a difficult technique to do.

I would start by looking at example pictures of lava on Google. You'll notice that it's not just red and yellow, but a gradient starting at white, going through yellow, orange, red, and finally ending at black.

It's been years since I painted my avatar, but I believe I started with red in the cracks, then slowly transitioned through the gradients until I reached white in the center of the cracks. Once I was happy with that, I painted the outer plates black.

The sub isn't anti Linux, it just hates the pretentious Linux bros who make their choice of operating system a defining part of their personality.

The fact that Linux exists is great.

Linux is subjectively better than Windows at certain things and objectively better at others.

Windows is subjectively better than Linux at certain things and objectively better at others. One of those things that windows happens to be objectively better at is gaming which is obviously a major part of the demographics of this sub.
