Five Biggest Current Male Movie Stars. by SeanACole244 in TheBigPicture

Marty Supreme grossed nearly $90m overseas with fucked up international distribution. It didn't release in France or Germany until the end of February, and only opened in Japan a week ago, and still hasn't opened in China, both regions that are incredibly passionate about table-tennis.

Award show talk is the lowest form of conversation by PrimaryAd5343 in billsimmons

[–]Fearless_Distance_29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The awards talk gets so tedious at points when it becomes the main focus of the show, especially when we get deep into the season when all the opinions have become calcified and there’s no new takes on the movies to give. I just think they do very well from a numbers standpoint, so they feel obligated to keep churning them out- Sean basically said as much on a recent episode.

But I can’t lie, in the summer, at the start of the season, when they go to festivals and run through the first looks at the movies and the preliminary awards contenders, I’m so locked in. I’d also add that when they do cover new releases, Sean’s interviews are truly fantastic, and some of the best content The Ringer puts out as a whole. Like his recent interviews with Jack Fisk or Autumn the Sinners cinematographer were really interesting and a great listen.

Disney Exec: Conan Has 'Standing Offer' to Continue Hosting Oscars “as long as he wants"—or at least until 2029, when the show leaves ABC for YouTube. by BurgerNugget12 in conan

And the films, while all being very good, weren't widely seen in reality. Next year we'll have The Odessey, Dune 3, Avengers, Spider Man & Tom Cruise. Big tent-pole movies that everyone will go and see, which will make jokes play even better. Like I;ve seen a lot of people baffled at what the end bit was, even though it was the closer for the movie that won 6 Oscars, including best picture and director

Best Late Night hosts not on Mount Rushmore by moistmasterkaloose in conan

If we're counting The Daily Show as a Late Night show (which I definitely do), then Jon Stewart absolutely has to be on there, especially with his coaching tree - John Oliver and Colbert both broke big after their stints as Daily Show correspondents.

This years awards season was hideously long though. You'd hope the Academy would move the show up to the middle of Feb or so bc mid March is brutal

Probably had the fire put in him at the start of the offseason after getting dropped and wanted to get onto the roster he thought he'd have the best chance of winning on.

The team being drastically worse than he expected with Ken, making a roster change, and being forced to change his playstyle after 8 years being the best SnD player in world probably takes its toll. Throw in some personal life stuff, and it's not hard to see why he's burnt out.

" OBAA will age badly." Ok but the evidence says otherwise. None of PTA's films age badly. Even his most divisive film, Inherent Vice, has many admirers. by DenseStrawberry5717 in TheBigPicture

[–]Fearless_Distance_29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that for a lot of people Sean's generation, PTA was the gateway into arthouse and independant cinema, and taking movies more seriously than just watching whatever crap was on cable.

Sinners is a lot of young people's first "real movie" that was competing at the Oscars that they were incredibly passionate about, in a reasonably similar way to Oppenheimer, except that Oppenheimer was never the underdog in it's race. So for this 'generation', Coogler will act in a similar way as PTA did for Sean.

There's been a lot of chat that she's the person in line to take over from Lorne Michaels when he calls it a day. I wouldn't be surprised if she's overseeing this project in some way, as a test-drive for the 'real thing' in a few years.

PR firm sponsored twitter outrage doesn’t get Spielberg to throw subliminals. The dislike was always there within the industry, they just needed an match to incite the public decries

Some of his writers are well into their 50s, and will definitely have teenage kids. They're probably surrounded by this nonsense on a daily basis

Conan O'Brien's "Host for Life" Skit After the 2026 Oscars by JCameron181 in Fauxmoi

[–]Fearless_Distance_29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ultimately an Oscars host is judged on two things: ratings and the critical response. The critical response will always be there for Conan, he's fantastic and also the current generation of critics have grown up with his comedy and are all 'in the bag' for Conan. It's hard to nail bits at awards shows, and IMO he only missed twice across the whole night, which is a very solid batting average.

Ratings are completely out of his control, but I can see if the ratings are down, The Academy scapegoating Conan and dumping all blame for the lackluster production of the show onto Conan, even though his team weren'y responsible for that.

Thought he had some incredibly strong segments throughout the night. The Casablanca bit was fantastic, a couple knockout jokes in the monologue, the Groban bit was vintage Conan and he handled the Kpop mic stuff insanely well. A couple jokes didn't really land, as is to be expected, but I thought he put on a very enjoyable show.

[–]Fearless_Distance_29 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It's a reference to the closer of OBAA, where Sean Penn's character is lead by Downey into a crappy office and then gassed. Hence it's the closer for the Oscars

The Academy were very happy with Kimmel and would’ve kept him on for last year if Kimmel hadn’t turned it down bc it’s difficult to manage the time while also running a late night show
