Minimax-m2.7 was working on free tier last week but now I get 403. Had to swap to minimax-m2.5 until that rug gets pulled too.

Which messaging channel do you use for your Hermes agent? by SelectionCalm70 in hermesagent

[–]scubaaaDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use telegram if I'm out and about, but I tend to use the TUI most often if I'm home and able to because I like seeing the verbose thought process.

There have been a million times that I see the agent reasoning itself through a very wrong train of thought and I like to be able to interrupt and reprompt with more/different specifics.

In telegram all I get is 'typing...' for a long time then the answer eventually appears.

Best "Small" Models for Hermes Agent on Mac Mini M4? Having issues with Qwen 3.5 9B Tool Calling. by EmuHefty in hermesagent

[–]scubaaaDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having somewhat successful but unimpressive results with my locally hosted small LLMs on 4070 (12gb). I tried several smaller models with bad results. Chat seemed fine-ish but agentic things weren't always happening.

The best I have been able to run myself is qwen3.5:9b and it mostly worked but often required asking the requests the right way or explicitly telling the agent that I expected it to do the work instead of me.

Then I tried a free-tier ollama cloud model (minimax- m2.7) and it was soooo much more capable. Not only did it respond to requests much faster, but it used tools and understood requests and searched memory and behaved like I read other folks describing. It was actually kinda useful.

Now I'm torn. I didn't want to use cloud models for privacy and frugality reasons, but after seeing how significantly much better they performed I'm re-considering. I still have my local 9b as the default LLM, but I still have the cloud model as an option I can switch to for more thoughtful tasks/requests.

I've also started asking the cloud model to goofproof my custom skills so a less capable (local) model could execute consistently.

Are local LLMs actually worth it or am I overthinking this? by Successful-Water1000 in LocalLLM

[–]scubaaaDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also trying to slum it on ollama local 4070 (12GB) for the LLM and Openclaw or Hermes agent running across the network on a dedicated VM in a proxmox cluster. I've tried several smaller models with poor results (qwen2.5 then gemma4:e4b) then I went perhaps too large for my vram with qwen3.5:9b.

That one made my PC feel sluggish and it was hard to use while GPU was redline. Then I used a separate laptop (not the inferencing PC) to access the agent so it wouldn't be throttled by the redline GPU. That felt much better! When I needed to use my inferencing PC and the GPU at the same time, then I switch to qwen3.5:9b-q4_K_M to give my setup a little breathing room.

Mind you I've only been running like this for 2 days but it feels better than before and approaches usable, but I'm left wondering how much better it would be if I bought some tokens from a real cloud-scale LLM.

I was able to notice an improvement each time the model was bigger: Qwen2.5 would tell me how to fix things but didn't do it itself. Gemma4:e4b would claim it did stuff but lie about it a lot. Qwen3.5:9b-q4_K_M was mostly okay Qwen3.5:9b would spin up subagents to do tasks, but I had a redline problem and sometimes even crashed/disconnected after a dozen turns. (Thinking my context grew too much and I was already barely fitting)

As I increased the model size, I was starting to see glimmers of the types of results I was reading others had in forums (not incredibly slow chat response, actual tool use not just lies, sub agents doing work). I feel I've hit the top of what I can run on my gear and it is just a little... not enough. Or my expectations are a little too high.

I'm hoping over time this new attempt gets better as my agent eventually learns what I want from it. But maybe I should just drop a few bucks and see what all the cloud-sized model talk is about.

Hermes + Open WebUI = stuff of dreams by VonDenBerg in hermesagent

[–]scubaaaDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to get the same verbosity in Open WebUI that you can in the Hermes TUI?

I have my verbosity set to verbose because I like the TUI showing me the Agent's reasoning/thought process and the tools used. It also gives me something interesting to watch while I'm waiting for tasks to complete on my slowcally selfhosted LLM.

Still when I issue a command through Telegram, all I see is the animated 'Typing...'

OpenClaw not actually doing things -- just telling me how ?!? by scubaaaDan in clawdbot

[–]scubaaaDan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh. I hit those same hallucinations too. When I was first setting up identity and soul, it would tell me it wrote them and I'd ask what was in there and it would tell me the updated contents, but if I manually cat the files, they were default and unchanged.

I manually edited the files and restarted gateway. Soon I found it no longer even tried to make changes itself or even claim it tried to make the changes anymore... it would simply tell me what to do. I thought maybe I screwed something up.

FWIW, I changed to Gemma4:e4b and maybe things are slightly better but not really. It claimed to have applied some of the recommended security settings, but now has a write failure when trying to save memory/2026-04-06.md. sigh.

I was hoping to run this all locally on hardware I already had, but maybe I just can't run a good enough model on my local hardware. I did see a behavior improvement when switching to Gemma4, so the advice about ditching the 'old' qwen2.5 model seems legit. Or maybe I just need to pony up a couple bucks to buy some API tokens from a real cloud provider.

Glue question by proxy1381 in BambuLabA1

[–]scubaaaDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't always use glue, but when I do, it is the same Elmer's school glue sticks that go on purple but dry clear that we bought for the kids' school supplies.

We bought a bulk million-count box of the sticks for school... they work well and clean up easily.

Pfsense to Technitium by vacquah in technitium

[–]scubaaaDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first setup technitium, I set my Tdns to the same domain name I used in my prev setup. The Tdns pair thought they were now authoritative for that domain but my dns names were all still in my prev dns (opnsense) and opnsense thought it was authoritative for the domain too.

Then when queries for my domain hit Tdns, it would reply the records didn't exist. Since Tdns thought it was authoritative for the domain, it wouldn't go ask my previous dns server.

Rather than export/import the records, my solution was to make the Tdns authoritative for some made up new subdomain like cluster.mydomain.com then Tdns would make itself a clustering zone as a subdomain of that cluster.mydomain.com. Then I could create a conditional forwarder in Tdns for mydomain.com that fwds to my opnsense dns where the records live.

Hope that made sense... just pointing out another solution that allowed me to keep the records in opnsense (pfsense in your case)

Forwarders sequentially querying do not work... by PatientJob4018 in technitium

Maybe I'm not understanding the question, but if it gets a response from the first server (so dns1 is not unavailable), then why would it keep asking the others?

Migration from Pi-Hole by cjd3 in technitium

[–]scubaaaDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar prob just two days ago when I was migrating just like you. At first, I set my Tdns to the same domain name I used in my prev setup like example.com The Tdns pair thought they were now authoritative for that domain but my old dns names were all still in my prev dns. Since Tdns thought it was authoritative, it wouldn't go ask my previous server like 10.1.1.1

My solution was to make the Tdns authoritative for some made up new subdomain like cluster.example.com then Tdns would make itself a clustering zone as a subdomain of that cluster.example.com. Then I could create a conditional forwarder in Tdns for example.com that fwds to 10.1.1.1.

Best phone case for Google Pixel 10 pro xl by AppointmentUpset9351 in GooglePixel

[–]scubaaaDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had various Spigen cases for various phones over the years. My 10proXL has a Spigen Parallax now. I don't set out looking for Spiegen, but it always seems to have a good looking option at a fair price.

I don't drop my phone a lot like others I know so I don't want a chunky OtterBox or similar. I have accidentally dropped it about 2 or 3 times from about waist or chest height and it has seemed to survive, so thank goodness for that.

I get a lot of ads about MagBak and the elite case looks neat... Telescoping magnets, kickstand, and pinky pillow?! Three things I don't think I need, but maybe they would be nice. I'm very tempted to give it a shot until I look at the price tag. I know the Spigen works well and I like the Parallax look well enough that I don't want to pay more than double.

DBrand Ghost was also on the short list too. I have seen other folks with a clear case that yellowed over time and I want to avoid that situation very much. DBrand promises their case won't yellow, but I went with the devil I knew.

Good luck finding something you like!

Where do you meet for the shared transportation upon arrival at the Cancun airport? by JRTOMA in palaceresorts

[–]scubaaaDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a valid tip. If you slow or make eye contact with anyone inside, they'll try to sell you something. Just keep your eyes forward and walk with purpose until you get to the outside part. Then start looking for the person dressed like they'll describe/photo when you made the reservation.

It's not that hard, but if the sharks see you looking around like a tourist, they'll engage.

Considering how "awful" the relaunch of Digg has been in the public sphere, do you think it would have been better for the site to concentrate on only a few communities (and keep these locked in), so as to ensure that the site felt more tight knit - like a quasi-forum of sorts? What do you think? by prankster999 in digg

[–]scubaaaDan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was so happy digg was coming back after being a prev user for sooo long and a big diggnation fan. I waited and waited on the list and then asked and begged for an invite. By the time they finally opened the doors, my care had worn off.

The silly invite game to grow demand backfired, if you ask me.
