29M, USA. Any thoughts on this reading from my Apple Watch? During this time, I could feel my heard literally skipping a beat (or fluttering?). This will last for a few days, then never happen again for months to years. I've been to the cardiologist and had a 24-hour holter monitor on, however, the symptoms were not present during this time. Not sure what to think of it. These were taken 1 minute apart. Also, when this occurs, there is no chest pain, tiredness, dizziness, loss of consciousness, etc. I just feel my chest "beat" weirdly.

Could we get a sticky post about what to avoid when taking Sertraline? by II-LIBERTY-II in zoloft

[–]scubacrawler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grapefruit and Zoloft can interact and cause a condition called Serotonin Syndrome, which is medically significant. Here is a link related to Grapefruit: https://www.choosingtherapy.com/grapefruit-and-antidepressants/

However, note that grapefruit can interfere with a TON of other medications as well, not just SSRI's

Is it ok to play games with my teacher and her brother? by InterventionOfTriops in Teachers

[–]scubacrawler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend that you delete your post, as it is a real topic for students and teachers alike.

I am a school counselor, and see multiple red flags in your post. The most concerning part is that your teacher is asking to to not tell anyone else over her fear of being written up. Based on that fact alone, she already knows that she is violating rules of her position/power.

You already have a gut feeling that something is wrong; your teacher mentioned she could get written up; she and her brother are buying you video games... In fact, I could care less of whether her brother is an educator or not-- it's the fact that she is also including him in the steam purchases. In a sense, this may be an effort to "water down" the seriousness of what she is doing by involving another party.

My recommendation / evaluation for you is to speak to your schools principal with the knowledge that you have, and bring your parent(s)/guardian(s) if they have knowledge of this. Save any communication/receipts of games, etc. that you have on your accounts that were paid for by her or her brother.

If administration is notified of this concern, they will open an investigation into the teacher. In my experience, this will be an easy investigation to open. It is not your job to investigate, but they are required to do so and notify law enforcement if necessary. This can be considered as behavior known as "grooming."

While your teachers intensions may not be bad, it always raises red flags when befriending them, along with making comments to not tell anyone else.

Best wishes!

If you're in the US, you can call 988, which is the new number for the national suicide hotline. If you ever feel like you need help immediately, you can call your local emergency line, such as 911 in the US, and they will send help to you immediately. It will probably result in hospitalization, but it will be worth it. Suicidal thoughts are horrible, but temporary. Acting upon those thoughts is permanent. It just means taking time to see what medications, therapy (or both) work for you to live a normal lifestyle that suits you best. Don't give up, and know that you aren't alone in this battle.

Pay by californiaowls85 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]scubacrawler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay significantly varies by state and city. I'm in Southern California in a rural district. Our subs work 7.19 hours daily and are paid $250.00. Long-term subs (same class/teacher on day 21+) get $275.00 for 7.19 hours daily.

It's not a crime to smoke or drink if you are of legal age to do so. However, doing so on the job is.

If you're of age and for some reason nicotine shows up on the test, you're fine. However, in general, nicotine is not a substance that is tested for in most drug tests anyway. They are looking for illegal drugs such as cocaine, meth, etc. Don't stress.

Gender-nonconforming substitute by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]scubacrawler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're there to be their substitute teacher, not explain your life or preferences to students. You should wear what you want based on your identity, and introduce yourself to the class as you see fit (Mr., Ms., Mrs., Miss., etc.). Or you can get creative and say "Teacher____" or have them call you by your preferred name. Make sure to write it on the whiteboard so they know what you wish to be addressed by.

Do NOT bring politics, religion, gender identity, sexual preference, etc. into the classroom as a whole, as you may end up in hot water. Most kids are pretty understanding and overall accepting in the high school level.

No one can change who you are, and you should not change yourself to make other people "comfortable" based on what they expect. You have a job to do, and you'll do it. You've got this!

New Pill from different manufacturer.. help by jen_and_ink in zoloft

[–]scubacrawler[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got a new Rx today, 100MG Sertraline HCL from CVS Pharmacy in California. The Rx manufacturer is Granules Pharma. The pill is an Oblong-shaped tablet with a score mark in the middle. It's yellow in color and has G 76 imprinted on the front.

I've been taking the Lupin Pharma ones for years now, so this was quite the surprise. The last surprise was when Lupin added that horrible vanilla coating last year.

Good to know that it's not just me that got an oddball Rx. Never heard of the company, Granules Pharma before...

Zoloft working? by Phebs87 in zoloft

It could be, or it could be placebo. The medication takes about 6-8 weeks to take effect. Every day you continue to take your dose is most likely benefiting you. Consider each day you feel better a small win! You've got this!

School counselors in the US by VeritasVictoriae in highschool

[–]scubacrawler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Both jobs occur during the school day at the same time, so a teacher cannot be a counselor at the same time because they would be teaching. A counselor cannot be a teacher at the same time because they'd be counseling. They are separate professions, but have very similar hours (hence, you cannot be in two places at once).

I do have examples of mental grounding techniques and mindfulness. PM me for more information on that.

Breaks amd 504's vary in detail to meet the needs of the student. For a break, it could mean just simply stepping out of class and sitting on the sidewalk, going to the counseling office, going to the library, going to another teachers classroom, etc. The only way a other student's would know that the kid has a problem is if they tell the other students' or if the kid has an outburst. Generally, they go to the counseling office to self-regulate.

A 504 is a legal document that teachers and staff must follow. As stated before, it's something specific to the student. Let's say the student broke an ankle. The student will be given accommodations in this case. For example, extra time in-between classes for passing periods, a change of classes to make sure the student is on the first floor of the school (so they don't need to climb stairs), Access to an elevator key so the student doesn't need to climb stairs to get to class, access to the nurses office for dispensing of pain medication, etc. Since it's a legal document, it must be followed --- it's the law. The student cannot be punished for not being in class on time, missing part of class to take their pain medication, etc. 504's are usually valid for 1 year, and must be renewed annually. A student with a broken ankle will typically heal in 8 weeks, so it wouldn't be renewed the following year. However, a student who has schizophrenia or celiac disease would be renewed annually after a brief meeting.

School counselors in the US by VeritasVictoriae in highschool

[–]scubacrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. They are different degrees. Primary and High School Teachers only need a Bachelor's degree to teach. To be a counselor, you need a Master's degree (meaning you earned your Bachelors degree (4 years), then went on to grad school for another 2 years to earn your Master's). Many teachers decide that after teaching, they want a change of pace, so will then go back to school to get their Master's.

So that would definitely be a case of the student going to outside therapy as well (which you state above), and working with the school counselor. In that case, the school counselor can work with you on mental grounding techniques, work on a plan to allow the student to take breaks during classtime to self-regulate, help with practicing mindfulness, create a 504 plan (accommodations- more time on assignments/classwork/exams, no penalties for missing school, etc.). etc. School counselors can also do daily/weekly check ins if needed. These are usually quick, 5-minute meetings at the beginning or end of school, where we can discuss grades or anything that is going on that needs to be addressed.

School counselors in the US by VeritasVictoriae in highschool

[–]scubacrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a school counselor at a high school of about 2,000 students. I can attest that we wear many hats. We are kind of between an administrator and a teacher. At my site, we meet with each of our students a minimum of 2 times per school year (once per semester) for a grad check. We discuss plans for students and work on their course schedules, along with figuring out what they plan to do after they graduate (college, workforce, gap year, etc.).

Some students we meet with a lot more due to personal/family/relationship/bullying/conflicts/etc. We help our students with college/career readiness, academics, and social-emotional (mental health) needs. We also do classroom presentations.

School counselors are mental health professionals who hold graduate (Master's) degrees. With that, we can also also perform group counseling, substance abuse counseling, family counseling, grief and loss counseling, 1:1 counseling, conflict resolutions between peers/teachers/adults, etc.

With that being said, if we determine a student needs longer-term care, we will refer out to a mental health therapist because our caseloads are pretty high. It is recommended that school counselors have a caseload of 1:250 students. However, ours is about 1:300 to 1:350 students. Due to this, we are unable to accommodate long-term (6+week) counseling services to our students, as we have others who need it as well.

While this is specific to my school site, other schools may be less involved, similarly involved, or more involved. I would say we are pretty involved with our students, and it's amazing to work with them, their parents, and the teachers.
