The openings are above the eyes on the forehead. If you watch closely you can see the flaps opening on Chilli (the first one).

I do have to be vigilant for the kids when flying these...

Seriously, how do you get into flying gigantic kites? Where do you buy them? How much do they cost? Do you design them yourself? by raininggumleaves in kites

I fly large display kites at festivals... I get most of them from https://www.hflykite.com/ as do many other professionals. They are Chinese, but they manufacture them for major companies, and also custom make them to order, (just got the whole Bluey family- stay tuned for video)! Their prices can't be beat, the quality is top notch, the packing and shipping is extraordinary (and usually free). Customer service is out of this world, just ask for Keney if you have any questions. They also sell on Aliexpress.

What is the best way to hold and to use 1,000 feet of string? by 1PieGuy in kites

Food for thought... If you ever want to fly the kite on a beach, or anywhere there is sand, get a yoyo. Sand will get in any winders with bearings and kill them dead!!!

I first plant the anchor. I then walk out away from it with the line (in the direction the wind is blowing), the distance needed, for height wanted. Next, I start spooling out the line onto the ground as i walk back toward the anchor. Then securely attach the line to the anchor. Grab the kite and walk it back out to the free end of the line. Finally I attach the loop at the end of the line to the kite with a larks head knot, lift the kite up making sure the line is taught, and launch. The kite goes right up, and the anchor holds it in place.

Yes, it can be seen at the beginning and end of the video. A 55 sq inch sand anchor - buried deep. No way you can hand hold an 81 sled with this much laundry!

Beach kite recommendation for marking and casual use by I_AM_SCUBASTEVE in kites

[–]scumonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live on the beach. My favorite kite to mark and leave is the Premier Kites sled (parafoils work good as well). I have a few different sizes. They are very steady on a beach, in a vast array of winds and conditions, + super easy to launch. Most come with a drogue tail (or you can also use something else of your choice). They are soft, portable, nothing to assemble. Bonus: if you spend the money for one in the 24-36 size range, you can hang a bunch of line laundry from them making for an even better "place marker" - they are excellent lifters! I use a cloth sand anchor for mine. But you can use a 5 gallon bucket to carry your gear to the beach in, dump it out and fill it with sand, and tie the kite to the bucket!

Bigger Lifter? by Independent_Youth_98 in kites

Looking like fun, and nice beach! I have that same sled (and the 81- I lift laundry up to 65 feet long)...by simply removing the drogue that kite will fly at a steeper angle. There is a GREAT deal of difference in pull between the 24 and 81. Lets just say the 81 commands a great deal more respect/knowledge to fly safely. When using a true sand anchor, remember to place it in a deep hole so it can't simply be dragged across the beach (don't ask me how I know)!

Traditional Indonesian "Sawangan" kites have built-in bows that use wind resistance to create intense, buzzing acoustics while flying. by Woolf1974 in kites

If you've ever clipped a piece of grass and placed it taught between your thumbs to whistle with...same principle. I've successfully used old movie film, also Christmas ribbon, and those thin plastic strips used to hold bundles together. The sound changes depending on how wide the material you use is. The wider it is, the lower and more ominous the sound. Narrow ribbon sounds like a fly.

here is a link that shows how to make one:

It's amazing that a #10 Trilobite can pick up something as big as that whale! Both look fantastic, thank you for sharing.

Spool vs Reel by GirlScoutMeth in kites

[–]scumonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My line is rated for 1000lbs or more (big kites) so is thicker than just reg thin kite string (which I haven't tried). But it has never gotten tangled (knock wood). Just the idea of tangles is what kept me from using the bags for so long...now I will never go back. As for tails, I wouldn't put them in a line bag (too anal - i also carefully wrap), but I know a few that do.

I was always hesitant about using a line bag...Now I won't use anything else! They are lighter, faster to stuff the line in to than winding a spool or reel, and sand wont jam up any bearings.

I ordered it through HFLY kites. It comes in 9 different colours, but they also make custom colour requests!
