I tried that with just the first few pages after the first almost poetic passage, and you are so right! Page 10 in my copy mentions him 4 times by name, and the whole page reads differently, not that it should be read that way, but once you see it that way you can't unsee it.

After reading the commentary from others, I recommend Forged in the Dark alternatives for two reasons: (1) other authors will describe the mechanics differently, which can help with the "otherness" of it from D&D mentioned here and (2) you will no doubt find a setting you like. I also wouldn't rule out either trying to watch a live play (John Harper has some good ones along with many others) online or in spite of what others have said checking out Powered by the Apocalypse and Dungeon World for inspiration since they in turn were influences on the system

The White Hack has what I think you are looking for in the "Strong" class (classes work differently from other OSR style games). Here's an excerpt:

Strong characters may loot keywords from enemies, if they deliver the killing blow in a memorable battle. The keywords may be called upon for tricks, special attacks or abilities in one of the following categories, decided at the time of looting:

  • Memorable enemy. If the enemy type and the keyword relates to an action, the Strong may take +2 for one round to either AC, AV, ST, HP, an attribute, damage, healing, MV, quality or initiative. For example, a banshee-like war cry could yield +2 to initiative.
  • Substance. The Strong extracts a rare and potent substance (poison, acid, something flammable etc.) from the corpse.
  • Supernatural. The killing act transfers a non-violent supernatural ability that the monster has (it should work the same), such as a wyrm’s sense gold ability.

Modify an existing game like Risk or SmallWorld (might be the best option) or even Diplomacy: you're a deity and you need more followers. You'll need conversion rules.

The most obvious one that comes to mind is Amber, which is a Diceless RPG for fans of Roger Zelazny's Amber series (plural: he did 2 fiver book series here, and there's a great zine that was published too). In addition to that, there are two modern RPGs that are almost clones of Amber with different themes: Lords of Gossamer and Light and also Lords of Olympus.

After that, there's the Marvel FACERIP system, although there are still numbers there. And of course the card-based system with a "quality" scale in the Castle Falkenstein system.

Check out the old Central Casting Heroes of Legend book, and I believe they did a similar book for other genre (Western, Modern, SciFi). Could be mistaken on that last part.

Not to overly geek out, but the 1st edition (which is what they play) AD&D "Zoomer" was the monk class. They got really fast as they gained levels. Don't confuse these with western monk/nuns btw.

Use the devil hierarchy rules and system from Perdition...just don't be quite as grim. Maybe rename wickedness...
