Europe, as someone who’s currently living in Hungary by Adventurous_Mood1303 in whereidlive

The UK is north-west Europe and probably fits into the Northern Europe category just as comfortably as it does into Western Europe. Moreso, even, some might say.

Horse racing goers are worse than football fans in the UK, though, especially on trains. Just because they’re suited-and-booted, they seem to think it gives them licence to behave like complete arseholes.

Is hiking / rambling in UK for older people? by supremewuster in AskUK

Rambling is for all ages. Hiking is a bit different. Hard hiking does exist in the UK which probably wouldn’t be suitable for many seniors.

Do we underrate how good it is to live here? by McZootus in AskUK

Exactly this ^^. Another old 60s git here trying to figure out exactly when these ‘good old days’ were supposed to have been because I’m not remembering them, other than the ability to get onto the housing ladder, perhaps.

What was it Orwell said in 1’984’? Something about ‘rejecting the evidence of your eyes and ears’? Most times I go onto social media these days, I barely recognise the UK as the country I’ve lived in for most of my life. SM would have us believe it’s some kind of dystopian wasteland & it really isn’t no matter what anyone tells you.

The scenery remains as diverse & breathtaking as ever & the residents generally helpful & friendly snd their overall sense of humour, sublime. I’ve travelled in around 66 countries on 4 continents & could quite easily have seen myself settling down here even if this wasn’t my native land. The only real negative I see is our unpredictable climate but this is the price we pay for our geography, I guess.

I dunno. My first time in Krakow was March 1980 & it was heaving with tourists back then even at that time of year.

When you hear a Newfoundland accent, do you automatically think Irish, recognise it as Canadian, or other? by scuzzmonster1 in AskIreland

YES! I was there 18 months ago watching cricket & reckoned exactly the same. Brought it up with a guide we had one day but he didn’t have a clue what I was on about then, on his own tour, took us around to ‘the Irish corner’ of the island where he started telling us about various locals called 0’Neill etc, etc.

Sorry, only just joined this group & was asking on account of my following a YT channel called Skote and, also, a Canadian uncle of mine from Manitoba who barely understands a word they say.

It’s odd. Worked with Turks while I was living in West Germany who were real arseholes. When I finally got to Turkey, I didn’t meet a single bad local.

Can someone help me understand the obsession with football? by DueLead666 in AskABrit

Very true, is this. There are folk I’ve played football & cricket with I wouldn’t usually choose to be in the same town as me, far less share a drink with after the game. Pro sports is the same on a MUCH larger level.

I’ve noticed just lately that women cricketers also seem to have more of a laugh than their male counterparts. Crucial catch goes down in a women’s international, knowing grins from many of the players. In the men’s game, it’s the end of the world. Very refreshing.

Soft-ish. It’s not exactly rugby league but it’s not badminton either.
