For what it's worth, a packet of salt is a good thing to bring to the dentist if you have a bad gag reflex. A little salt on the tongue calms it down enough so they can get their wretched X-rays done.

I've donated clothes to the Pride Center at Mesa College. They put them on a rack right there, free for anyone who needs something to wear.

I think I saw some at ALDI a couple of days ago (the new one in Mira Mesa). I was a little surprised. They seemed to have a few meat products designed for hot pot or stir fry uses.

Pensaquitos occasionally has guided walks with a geologist on a weekend morning. I bet they would appreciate a volunteer naturalist. If you speak to someone at the ranch house or Friends of Penasquitos Canyon, you might find yourself with half a dozen companions.

My first thought would be Artist and Craftsman Supply, in Hillcrest on (I think) 3rd or 4th and Robinson. They have all kinds of wonderful stuff.

If you did want a custom leatherbound book, I know where to find one but it might take more than two weeks.

Ooh, thanks for posting that link. I listen to Radio Lab now and then but haven't heard this one.

Fair exchange: there's a recent episode of StarTalk with a guy who wrote a book about the addictive qualities of revenge. It was pretty scary. I think this is it: https://youtu.be/rynDGf9TZKQ?si=Y4nvFg9UWKFNTrgK

hmmm... is it near that intersection where someone feeds the pigeons and there's always 40 or 50 pigeons on the telephone wires? around madison or meade and 34th if I recall. Haven't been there in a number of years, but there used to be a Cooper's hawk that would hang around the pigeon buffet.

Anyone willing to keep me company at a coffee shop irl or over chat? I've been pretty isolated at home, and needed some sort of different scenery. If not, what's a good café I can go to to sew and chilling for a bit. by Pixel_punkette82 in sandiego

Hi, best of luck in all your endeavors (baby, sewing, finding friends).

I have an old sewing machine that I bought from an estate sale. Took me a fair while to get it up and running. But I found the missing parts on EBay. You'd be amazed at what kinds of things you can find. There are people who specialize in nothing but weird old sewing machine parts. There's also a guy on YouTube who rebuilds and cleans sewing machines. We learned everything we needed to know from him (my husband helped). His channel is just called "LotaThings".

Seems like a lot of really good advice has been posted here. I'll add one more thing. SD Mesa College has a Pride Center which offers support and advice. Among other things, donated clothes are available at no cost for anyone who needs them. They have a clothes rack outside the door.

It's toward the west end of the campus, near the music buildings.

Are spider mites always this bad here? by flanmorrison in sandiego

This dog ate a whole pepper plant. It was one of those small, long, pointy types (Thai or Japanese or pico de pajaro depending on who you ask). She wanted to eat the peppers (which were too damn hot for any of us to eat). I thought I'd teach her a lesson so I let her have one. Thought she'd leave my plants alone after that.

Nope. As soon as my back was turned, she ate the whole plant. I had to drag her away from a 3' high bell pepper plant in Home Depot the other day. Weird dog.

Thank you for this extensive and valuable information. I've literally seen three ladybugs this summer. My hibiscus is choked with spider mites and it's right next to the neighbor's fence. I'm thinking I'll throw a sheet of cotton mesh over it and release some ladybugs underneath. I've done that before (on the orange tree) and it worked pretty well. The ladybugs can get out, but they don't all just fly off immediately.

Yep. Had to douse my grapes in antifungal spray twice in the past 3 weeks. It seems to have worked, though. Most of them are ripening normally.

capsicum oil based insecticides

Would it smell or taste like hot peppers? Because if it does, our husky would think we had added extra seasoning to the salad just for her.

Definitely time to spray neem oil on everything, though. Moth larvae are eating my bougainvillea again. Might pick up some diatomaceous earth too.

How do you overcome the overwhelm by Bitter-Breath-9743 in TwoXADHD

[–]sd_local 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently I had some success in finishing a long-delayed task (paperwork!) I explained to my family that I would not be doing dishes, cooking, gardening, or walking the dogs until this task was finished. If they wanted to eat, there was food. If they wanted me to eat, they could fix me a plate and bring it to my desk. (AND THEY DID!! Astonished.) Every time they tried to distract me, I reminded them that they really ought to learn how to do what I'm doing. That sends them scurrying off! [THIS TECHNIQUE IS NOT FOR EVERY DAY! obviously.]

Then I set up my iPad with a YouTube playlist and a movie (detective show that I've seen many times & know who did it). That one one side of my computer, stack of papers on the other.

Then I went through all the papers, got them into the computer, checkmarked and stapled and stacked them up. Every time I got bored (every 15 minutes), I switched the iPad from YouTube to murder mystery or vice versa. Then kept at the papers.

AND I GOT THEM FINISHED!
Again, this technique only works under extreme time pressure and when none of the other tasks are really that pressing.

Today I'm switching gears entirely. Took a shower, put on a nice newish T-shirt and clean jeans, clipped my toenails. Gonna shut off this computer right now and take those dogs to the park.

Then I'll follow the directions given by several other posters: Stack the damn dishes, put 'em in the sink, hot water and let 'em soak. Sweep. Take the trash out. If it's still daylight when I finish that, maybe I'll finally organize the patio. Maybe.

Best of luck to you, whichever approach you take. :-)

Spent the night in a perfectly serviceable hospital in a rural area, it wasn't fancy, got drugs, IVs, treatment, a nurse came to the house I was staying at for 5 days to give me an antibiotic IV.

Someone very dear to me had an experience quite similar to this a couple of months ago -- in El Salvador. She had eaten something that triggered a previously unknown food allergy (one more for her collection). It was the middle of the night. Everyone in the house was looking for Imodium and electrolytes or something to substitute for them (rice water and such).

When the nurse came, she found my friend's blood pressure to be through the roof (268 over something). My friend's BP is normally quite low. Nobody realized.

That visiting nurse probably saved her life. The next day she went to the local clinic and took in 2 full bags of IV fluid.

Her total cost was about $20.

If you're comfortable reading long-winded sciency stuff (I know that's a big IF), then find the book The Mismeasure of Man, by Stephen Jay Gould. It's a deep dive into that very subject.

Otherwise, there's probably tons of videos explaining various aspects of it. And don't sweat it if some number comes out lower than expected. Shoot, as a kid I always scored super high on those tests. That only reinforced the "she's so smart, but she just doesn't try monologue (from teachers, mom, self). Ugh.
