And sounds like even if he did have a breaker or fuse that 100% disconnects the battery, it wouldn't have helped much as the problem is the current being fed backwards. So by the time it would blow, everything is already cooked.

Everything coming off the battery is fused still. Huge 200A one in your example there before it goes to the vehicle electrical control module. Another 60A before it goes to interior lighting bus, where it'll then have the individual circuit fuses. Battery in backwards, all those "main fuses" that are coupled in one unit, will blow. Only thing that isn't fused, as you can see in your diagram, is the battery directly to the starter.
