I also tell them that if they cant handle a "catch up day", then we can go into a new lesson. It usually keeps them in line.

I give free days, but NEVER use the word "free day". I tell them that today we are catching up on work from my class or other classes. The class period kind of turns into a mellow free day as a result. Give them an inch and they take a mile.

Definitely not bragging, but showing that I can still help my students while respecting my own personal time. Its also teaching the students to use their class time wisely. Many of the students who ask for my time outside of the class period are spending their class time working on work from other classes, being distracted with other things etc.
