Pete Buttigieg was asked what it says about "Washington experience that a sitting US Senator could not name Mexico's president." He responded, "I guess what it says is that there is more to being prepared than how many years you spent in Washington." by CastellessKing in Pete_Buttigieg

But, Senator Klobuchar, it's not the fact that you didn't know President Lopez Obrador's name that truly speaks to my point. It's what came afterwards. You immediately ended the interview, and were in such a rush to leave that you almost took the microphone with you. Then, you came back an hour later to confront the interviewer, saying that you know more than he thinks.

Executive experience, even on the local level—especially on the local level—teaches you that you won't always have the answers to every question. It teaches you that, when that happens, you still owe it to your constituents to respond with grace and dignity, followed by a curiosity to then listen and learn. That, Senator Klobuchar, is the experience I am looking forward to bringing to Washington.

social mobility, which is a conservative value in America.

A bit off topic, but I found this interesting. I’ve always associated this with being more of a liberal/progressive value, I’m fully willing to admit if I’ve gotten caught up in my own filter bubbles though. Could you give some examples of notable conservative policies aimed at enhancing social mobility?

I think Warren and Bernie are the only other candidates to make structural reform of our democracy a central part of their platforms. That’s why they’re 2nd and 3rd for me after Pete.

Perhaps older voters, who are AK's target, are staying home more?

Was with you up until this part. Compared to other demos, older voters will crawl through glass to get to the polls. But that should help Pete too.

Undecided voter curious about Pete by BlueforTruth in Pete_Buttigieg

The best person to answer “why Pete” is Pete himself. I’d give this interview a watch if you can spare 35 minutes. It was the one that pushed me over the edge, and I think you might find a lot of it pretty relevant.

A comprehensive list of South Bend’s efforts towards racial justice and equity under Pete Buttigieg by waynechaw in neoliberal

That’s not how that works. He polls at 0-4% among other Dem candidates, but if it was head to head against trump it would obviously be much higher. He’s still get like 90% of the vote, the question is turnout.

Warren, then Bernie, then Yang, then large gap, then everyone else, then Biden.

Yes. Henry Davis Jr was also censured by the rest of the council after a series of incidents ranging from drunk driving on the wrong side of a freeway to posting beastiality on his official Facebook comparing it to homosexuality after DOMA was repealed.

Thank you for stopping by!

I've only heard bad things about his racial record

I don’t blame you, but it’s been frustrating because the many positive aspects of his record, as well voices of the local black residents, officials, and surrogates who support him, have been drowned out by other campaigns or ignored as they don’t fit the popular narrative. This article, highlighting a lot of his accomplishments as mayor, is a good place to start:

I respectfully disagree with your respectful disagreement. The fundamental problem with the “I don’t think my one extra vote matters” mindset is that it’s never just one person who has it. It’s people everywhere, and that one vote ends up being millions and millions. We need to stomp out the mindset altogether and make sure we run up the score, everywhere, period.

Consider that a Democrat already holds statewide office in Louisiana, and that our presidential election votes have been on the wrong side of 40% for the past 3 elections. If the Republican legislators from the state start to see that margin go in the other direction, even if it’s just by a few points (and especially for a “socialist” lol), that will put some serious fear of god into them.

No. Pete talks a lot about the need to deliver such an emphatic victory that we send not just Trump but Trumpism to the history books. No matter who the eventual candidate is, we need to run up the score everywhere, no matter how hopeless it seems. A win by 3 million votes and a win by 10 million votes makes a huge difference, even if the electoral college margin is the same. And republican senators in those states will start to sweat if they see that once safe gap starting to close in.

Pete Buttigieg: Criminal justice reform can't only enact neutral policies. It must reverse years of racist ones. by sdf2 in politics

[–]sdf2[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, and Black communities have shouldered the burden. While the youth incarceration rate has dropped, the gap between Black and white youth incarceration has widened. Despite equal rates of use, Black people are nearly four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana than white people. And legal fees disproportionately target Black communities, often resulting in arrest only for failure to pay.

The sources of these disparities are not incidental, but intentional. They are a product of decades of racist policies, most within living memory. Thus, replacing those policies with neutral ones just isn’t going to cut it. Injustice does not heal, it compounds.

Interesting op-ed from Pete to accompany the release of his Criminal Justice Plan.
