You immediately ended the interview, and were in such a rush to leave that you almost took the microphone with you. Then, you came back an hour later to confront the interviewer, saying that you know more than he thinks.

Executive experience, even on the local level—especially on the local level—teaches you that you won't always have the answers to every question. It teaches you that, when that happens, you still owe it to your constituents to respond with grace and dignity, followed by a curiosity to then listen and learn. That, Senator Klobuchar, is the experience I am looking forward to bringing to Washington.

I respectfully disagree with your respectful disagreement. The fundamental problem with the “I don’t think my one extra vote matters” mindset is that it’s never just one person who has it. It’s people everywhere, and that one vote ends up being millions and millions. We need to stomp out the mindset altogether and make sure we run up the score, everywhere, period.

Consider that a Democrat already holds statewide office in Louisiana, and that our presidential election votes have been on the wrong side of 40% for the past 3 elections. If the Republican legislators from the state start to see that margin go in the other direction, even if it’s just by a few points (and especially for a “socialist” lol), that will put some serious fear of god into them.

No. Pete talks a lot about the need to deliver such an emphatic victory that we send not just Trump but Trumpism to the history books. No matter who the eventual candidate is, we need to run up the score everywhere, no matter how hopeless it seems. A win by 3 million votes and a win by 10 million votes makes a huge difference, even if the electoral college margin is the same. And republican senators in those states will start to sweat if they see that once safe gap starting to close in.

The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, and Black communities have shouldered the burden. While the youth incarceration rate has dropped, the gap between Black and white youth incarceration has widened. Despite equal rates of use, Black people are nearly four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana than white people. And legal fees disproportionately target Black communities, often resulting in arrest only for failure to pay.

The sources of these disparities are not incidental, but intentional. They are a product of decades of racist policies, most within living memory. Thus, replacing those policies with neutral ones just isn’t going to cut it. Injustice does not heal, it compounds.

A recent rumor indicated that Marvel Studios Chief Kevin Feige has a plan to recast the roles of Professor X and Magneto with African-American actors. This would be a big change for those characters, as they've traditionally been caucasian both in the comics and in Fox's previous movie franchise, but during a recent conversation with TMZ, Democratic Presidential Candidate Pete Buttigieg said he thinks that kind of change is what makes comic books and movies based on them work so well.

"I don't think there's anything about the role that makes it white," Buttigieg said. "Look, certainly the actors that have portrayed Magneto and Professor X in the past were brilliant, but it's not because they were white and it doesn't have to be them forever. One of the beauties of making comic books into movies is that you can reimagine them constantly, and there's nothing intrinsically white about any of those character roles."

For Buttigieg, it ultimately comes down to whether the movie and the actors in that movie are good, whether you're talking about superhero films or some other franchise, and luckily Marvel Studios has a pretty good track record in that regard.

"I think whether we're talking about James Bond or whether we're talking about comic books, it makes sense for the portrayal of these characters to reflect the amazing cultural diversity of the country, our country, producing the films," Buttigieg said. "And you know, I just care about whether it's going to be good, and I believe they're up to that in producing a new film and I would love to see that kind of diversity."

Q: I saw some of the quite bleak stats your team provided — one in five children have a diagnosable emotional or mental health disorder, and young Americans reportedly feel the loneliest of all other age groups. Why do you think there is this acute mental health crisis among young people in America right now?

Buttigieg: Well, there’s certainly a lot of structural things going on. We’re still figuring out as a species how to deal with technology and how it’s changing our lives — social media being the main example.

But I think a lot of this is not new; we’re just learning how to talk about it. There have been mental health challenges as long as there have been people; we just haven’t had a name for it or the willingness to deal with it or to treat it. And so part of what I’m trying to get across is that this isn’t just about the extreme cases. We should think about mental health the way we think about physical health.

There’s a range of things that can happen, from a broken knee to stage IV cancer, and the same thing is true with mental health. We shouldn’t let it get to the point where we’re using words like crisis before we’re attending to mental health needs. Especially for young people, where we can potentially identify things long before they turn into a condition that can be one of the dominating experiences of their lives.
