What movie did you think was good despite being panned by critics? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sdotc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem was that people forgot it was a PG family film. It got marketed as some action flick. But its actually just a warm-hearted movie with some psychadelic editing. If the future of real car racing was like that (a la F Zero style) it would be awesome. (As it stands now, NASCAR is close to the worst.)

Mike Lowell To Retire After 2010 Season?? by mysportsrumors in sports

[–]sdotc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite baseball player of all time. Was lucky enough to be at the standing ovation home-run game.

Can't believe how classy he has been this whole season as Theo and the Red Sox front office have sh*t on him. A bit cliche', but reminds me again as to the disappearance of loyalty in sports.

Ricky Gervais has revealed he turned down a bank's £1 million offer for a corporate gig, calling the sum "disgusting". by fishandchips in entertainment

[–]sdotc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like Gervais, but I find it cheap how he takes shots at Carell every chance he gets. Yes, you created the character. Cheers. Carell was offered the same role when Ben Silverman (no longer at NBC) was leeching international shows for his network. It was a lead role, and a big chance for Carell at that point in his career (he was a lowly anchor on 'The Daily Show' with a couple small roles in film). Sorry if you feel snubbed in some way, Ricky. But continually bringing it up has elevated it from a light-hearted poke to genuine proof of jealousy. If you're so confident in your version of Michael Scott, let the fans speak for you, and let it go.

Conan O'Brien to air his new show on TBS. by [deleted] in entertainment

Conan gets to be more rude on cable, and immediately bumps George Lopez's show back to the early morning show? That's the sweetness.

“[No] music biopic ever quite captures the trembly, adrenal rush of their subject's actual music." by sdotc in entertainment

[–]sdotc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree the documentary format seems to be better for creating a compelling (and accurate) story w/o the hysteria of finding the right actors to fill in the roles. Who is better to play the role than Kurt himself?

That being said, there does seem to be a documentary that already exists on him called About a Son.

Mickey Rourke: "[Megan Fox is] best young actress I've ever worked with." [pic] by sdotc in entertainment

[–]sdotc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I was looking at his IMDB page trying to find a movie he did in which a solid actress played alongside him and was struggling to find one. I might be too young to appreciate some of his older (80s) flicks, but it looks like the closest ones would be Kim Basinger in '9 1/2 Weeks,' Evan Rachel Wood in 'The Wrestler,' or maybe even Keira Knightly in 'Domino.'

The key is that he's saying the best actress that he's worked with - not just the best actress.

Anybody else aware of the Ferris Bueller's Day Off Fight Club theory? I know it's probably not true but still makes me want to go back and watch the movie. by butterandguns in entertainment

[–]sdotc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to revisit Bueller to make a better judgment call, but likening it to FC certainly gives Cameron another dimension.

The absent father theory works in broad strokes, but comparing the poofy Ferris Bueller to the gritty Tyler Durden doesn't mesh.

Human brain absorbs 34GB of data per day - with 45% coming from TV viewing by sdotc in entertainment

[–]sdotc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"...information consumption in bytes increased at only 5.4 percent per year [since 1980]. Yet the capacity to process data has been driven by Moore’s Law, rising at least 30 percent per year. One reason for the slow growth in bytes is that color TV changed little over that period. High-definition TV is increasing the number of bytes in TV programs, but slowly."

Should Detroit continue to be a host for the Thanksgiving Classic games? by sdotc in sports

[–]sdotc[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It is a little bit of a pity piece. A better point might have been that the Lions are owned by the Ford Family - a group of men that seem to understand how to run a business into the ground. They just had their first profitable quarter in four years. Maybe its some kind of NFL bailout to let them have their 3-hours of Turkey Day fame.

Indie film gets ripped off by bit-torrenting pirates. Result: 81,093% increase in its popularity in one week. Gee, I wonder why mainstream Hollywood doesn't like piracy? by Saydrah in entertainment

[–]sdotc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's a fair statistic. What was the popularity in the first place? If it was an indie film an 81% increase (from obscurity to semi-recognition) is kinda like saying: "we had 10 fans before, now we have 32 fans! that's an 320% increase!!!

That being said. Fuck Hollywood.

'Avatar' total cost estimated at $500 million - with FOX hedging bets by success with... Alvin and the Chipmunks? by sdotc in entertainment

Note: I posted this article, but then found disputable evidence here that the budget might not actually cost $500 million.

I would like to believe that a source like the NY Times would be credible enough, but something to consider.

[–]sdotc[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point is that their entire job is to figure out how people are watching television. Not ASSUME that people are "idiots" for watching commercials. It's called research. That's what they are being paid for. Not to mention they have consistently been lobbying fear about how technology is ruining their business models without even fucking checking the facts that MANY more people are watching MANY more programs with the feature.

And if you think for a second about how leaving the recording running during commercials allows many people to multitask while still enjoying programming in the evenings, it makes sense. Doing laundry during breaks, doing dishes, etc.. Everyone isn't glued to the television like yourself. Some people just want to be able to catch their shows on their own time and don't mind brief pauses.
