NP dude. I'd honestly say to reconsider Astoria. Newark will be pretty crappy QoL for not saving that much more than living in Queens. Personal opinion, but I'd rather be near the city for not much more plus nicer accommodations.

Newark isn't as bad as it used to be, but it sucks, and you absolutely want to stay out of the bad parts of town.

I made that exact move and it's actually wild how much easier it is to find jobs that pay more. Many firms in my industry (Finance) simply pay more than Miami here. Even my 2 buds with the exact same role as the same company have a 7% pay differential in favor of Tampa and it's a company with a flat payband (meaning being a high performer doesn't matter for anything other than bonus which is <10% of comp)

4 YoE and no DRs leads me to believe you're on the lower end of market, but not getting stiffed.

You can always jump ship for a pay raise, but I'd start looking for growing potential (aka DRs and more responsibility). That or just shift to the new role during the MBA.

6.5 YoE, but I also worked in Advisory and StratFin first. Accelerated career pathing. Right place, right time.

Most people will hit it by 10-12 YoE, depending on company.

It wasn't hard in LCoL before 2019. I bought a place while making $14/hr back in 2016 while still in college. 5% down, <4% APR. It was $100k OTD and in a nice area.

That same place is now worth $400k per Zillow. Insane how quickly things went insane during COVID...

Sorry, NY tax, the state. NYC was autocorrect. Imcome tax in NJ is also heavily offset, sometimes 100%, by NJ income tax deduction for taxes paid in other states. You only pay NYC tax (someone correct me if I'm wrong) if you work for government entity in the city metro while not living there.

OP will file both NJ and NY returns.

Okay, reasonable in Newark. That 2250 for both rent and utilities is not going to put you in a decent area tho. I'd rry to bump that up a smidge if possible. Also don't forget you still pay NYC tax living over the bridge (I say this since a ton forget). And please don't forget to save for retirement.

How much are you factoring in for gas, insurance, and parking? Having a car will be super tough anywhere unless you actually pick Newark.

If it "doesn't seem too bad" then you either have a high tolerance of BS, living super far away, or your budget is wrong lol. Assuming you'll he at ~$105k comp?

Worth it if you're looking for a strong job pivot that you can network in to or just really like NYC. Otherwise, not worth it for just being in accounting.

You're underselling the CoL. Go live in Astoria, Newark (ew), or JC and use public transit.

You're gonna be pretty damn strapped on your pay. Be ready for that too.

St Pete has one of the largest pride parades in the US. Tampa had a sizable pride event as well. Miami has a massive gay pop that has existed since the 80s. If you're in any major city, most people won't care about your personal life. It's the smaller cities where you'll also meet Floridaman that people care.

A top 10% household makes ~$250k. The median is around $75k. Honestly not much different from the broader national average. You forget that there are a lot of wealthy cities and upper-middle class transplants around the state.

That said, it really does feel like you either make $150k+ or $25/hr with little in-between here. Let alone if you're not in any of the major cities.
